Sugar (Dachshund Mix)

Sugar is about 5 years old. She is Dachshund and "who knows?" We adopted her from the animal shelter about 4 years ago. She likes to go for rides in the car, take walks in the park, and play with her ball and her "daddy's" (my husband's!) shoes and socks! Sometimes we try to teach her to "sing"; she howls sometimes when she's playing and it sounds almost like singing!

Princess Xena the Cat

Princess Xena, Warrior Woman is our cat. I call her that because at 5 weeks of age, she negotiated a 6 lane highway at rush hour. What a brave warrior she was. She is 6 years old now and is a tabby housecat.

I found her on a Monday moring during rush hour traffic as she crossed a 6 lane highway! She was completely alone and terrified. She ran under a large mowing machine on the campus of the college where I worked. As soon as I got to my desk I called Maintenance and asked them to find her. They called back in a very short time to tell me she was fine and in a box in their office. I went right away to see her and I must say that the first time I picked her up she belonged to me! I fell in love at that moment and that love continues today. Her love has gotten me through dark days and worrysome nights.

She loves to race from one end of the house to the other. She also loves to watch the feral cats and some raccoon babies that come to feed in our back yard. We live basically in the woods so we also get opposums and skunks too. We can't stand to thing an animal is hungry so we put food out every day and enjoy sitting at the kitchen table looking out our double window at each group of animals that comes to visit.

Sharing Dinner with Friends

My daughter will be going to college next year. My friends and I are in the same boat, not wanting to cook for just ourselves. So I suggested that the 4 of us each take a day to cook. While the other 3 come over. This way you only have to cook a couple times a week. Also you get to try out different foods. It's also cheaper.

Writing on the Bathroom Mirror

When I need to do something in the AM, I jot a note on the bathroom mirror with a dry-erase marker at night. I see it as I am dressing and brushing teeth, and I can then wipe it off the mirror with a tissue.

Partially freeze meat before slicing and you can get thin, even cuts. This method is useful for preparing meat for stir fry and other Chinese dishes.

Stain Pretreater for Colorfast Fabrics

For colorfast fabrics, a great stain remover is automatic dishwashing detergent! Rub a little into the stain to pre-treat and wash alone or with other colorfast fabrics... it works great!

Listening to Audio Books While Working, Exercising and Cleaning

I have a job that is kind of automatic so they let us use headphones to listen to music but instead I go to the library and get audiobooks. I'm telling you folks, it's the best thing since sliced bread. It makes my drudgery day go by faster and I look forward going to work the next day to find out what happens next. I also use them when I clean, exercise (which I don't do enough) and travel. I do not even have to go the library only to pick them up.

I just go online and choose at my leisure and click on the ones I want, then they call me and let me know they are ready. You can also re-check them out online. They have CD and tapes new and old. I don't have time to just sit and read anymore but being able to listen lets me read and frees my hands up at the same time. It is great entertainment that is free. They also have a lot of special programs for your children and grandchildren.

My Frugal Life - Giving Back

I went out into the world and started supporting myself at age 15. At age 22, after a disastrous teenage marriage, I became a single mom and learned frugality out of necessity. I learned to swallow my pride and accept "handouts" to keep my child fed and clothed. I remarried at 25 and have now been married more than 20 years. The main thing I have learned, I think, is compassion. While I grumble at the rising costs of gasoline, etc, I am not seriously in danger of becoming homeless or of going hungry... but so many others are. Perhaps because I was once there myself, I feel that I cannot turn my back on those in need. My Frugal Life

One thing that I feel passionate about is donating school supplies to families who cannot afford to buy them for their children. I vividly remember when my son (now almost 30) was starting kindergarten and I was barely scraping by as a newly single Mom. I literally burst into tears in the school supplies aisle of K-mart when I realized that there was NO WAY I could afford to buy the required supplies, even at that grade level, unless I skipped buying groceries or paying the rent. I vowed then and there that once I got back on my feet, I would try to spare other Moms from having to experience that. So now I buy all the "loss leader" school supplies at all the stores for several weeks leading up to the start of school, and donate them to those in need.

I also purchase clearance items all year long and make up Christmas "goodie bags" which I deliver to our local County Home each December to the destitute, mostly elderly residents. I use coupons and my finely honed bargain hunting skills to fill a grocery sack with non-perishable food items, which I drop off at a local food pantry roughly once a month.

There's a quote I love from Mother Theresa: "Not all of us can do great things -- but all of us can do small things, with great love."

Choosing a Countertop Color

Can anyone help me choose a countertop color? I am re-doing my kitchen with natural maple shaker cabinets. I have neutral taupe-y ceramic tiles on the floor of the kitchen, but the kitchen is part of a bigger family room with natural oak hardwood floors. My appliances are stainless steel. Most pictures I've seen of this type of room show shiny black granite tops, but I am doing laminate. Any ideas other than black? "Bronze rust" is a Formica color that I'm considering - black with lighter browns in it. Thanks very much in advance. Neat site!

Tomatoes Are Not Getting Ripe

Our tomato plants have luxuriant growth and lots of green tomatoes but they are taking forever to ripen, and when they do, they're blotchy. They are growing in silty soil but I've put lots of compost into it, and I've been feeding them with Miracle Gro every two weeks. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks!

Getting Rid of Monkey Grass

I have a natural area in my front yard that I have planted with hundreds of tulips. It also has a border of monkey grass. the monkey grass is invading the entire natural area. I have sprayed it several times but the monkey grass has a wax coating and the spray has no effect. I want to kill the monkey grass inside the area with killing my border or the dormant tulip bulbs. Please advise me how to do this. Thank you.

Removing Burnt Smell From Microwave

I microwaved a potato in a paper bag with seasonings for 9 min. I took it out of the microwave and the seasoning in the bottom of the bag was burnt. The potato was fine but my microwave sure smelled. I tried washing the microwave down with 409 but it was not much help. I left the door open and unplugged it last night to get the smell out. Please help me.

Freezing Raspberries

Selecting High-Quality Fruit Raspberries:

Once frozen, berries do lose some of their texture, but they are still good for use in dishes and desserts. Select firm, mature, well-colored berries that are fully ripe. Avoid leaky, mushy, or discolored berries. Remove those that are immature, moldy or damaged.
