English Beans on Toast

This recipe is a sort of quick rendition of a meal that my friend's wife said they ate all the time growing up in England.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cans pork and beans
  • 8 slices whole wheat bread

Directions:

Toast the bread. Heat beans in saucepan until almost bubbly

Place 2 slices bread on 4 plates, top evenly with bean mixture. Serve!

Servings: 4
Time:3 Minutes Preparation Time
3 Minutes Cooking Time

I was stationed in England over 20 years ago and eat this simple dish at times. Seems odd to some people but it's really good!

This is also a really healthy meal, as when you serve beans or peas with a bread or other starch, you make a "complete protein" and you get some essential amino acids without the meat. Brilliant!

Everyone should try this. I have loved it for years.

Ahhhh my favourite dish! Yep I can confirm we eat this a lot of the UK cos I am a Brit living in Britain! I also put a thin layer of grated cheese on top, add chopped chillies to give it a zing, also Worcester sauce. I use plain baked beans in tommie sauce to bulk out chillies, spag bog, beef mince dishes, Mexican dishes and sometimes a tomatoe curry. They are a good source of fibre are cheap and also are great on jacket spuds, don't under estimate baked beans, as you can tell, I love 'em!
