Today's Tips
Smaller Portions
Since there are only two people in our household now I still buy in bulk, bring it home and separate it (like chicken, etc) in smaller meal size portions and put in the freezer. It really helps save me money and time.

Documents and Safe Storage
With all the trouble we are having with weather created disasters, we need to make sure we have records of importance in a few safe places. Security boxes and locked freezers work well. I feel much safer with them sealed in an airtight bag as well, then placed in the storage box (freezer or security box). With all the mess these floods are causing, what a relief it is to have dry documents when you need them.

Using Dried Lily and Iris Leaves
The dry leaves left on irises and day lilies make great "ties" for holding things on autumn wreaths and they are so natural, they blend in too.

Some Baby Shower Ideas
Baby Food
Ask shower guests on the invitation to "Help Mother Hubbard to fill her Cupboard" by bringing two jars of baby food to the shower. I always set out a big basket for the ladies to set their jars in.
Diapers
I also request that everyone try and bring a bag of diapers (newborn size) this really helps the new mom. For the first couple of weeks she is set on diapers.
Motherly Advice
As one of the party games I have a blank book that gets passed to each guest to write down some motherly advice in. A quick tip or some other secrets that a new mom needs to know or just a quick congratulations.
Necklace for Mom
I also set out on the table a couple of bowls of alphabet beads for the guests to make a necklace for the Mom with her and the new babies name. At first we go around the table and as each guest adds a bead, they tell the Mom to be one thing they love about her.
Prayer Candle
I also give each guest a candle to light on the day of the delivery. I ask that each say a prayer for Mom and Baby. It is a loving thing they can do for Mom and the baby.

Special Ladies Crochet Tea
At least once every winter I try and throw a Crochet Tea. I gather my friends who enjoy crocheting. My invites usually have a small fridgie attached to the invite and I ask that they all bring the latest new crochet books they have bought. I set up my living room with comfy pillows on the chairs and couches and try to get a fire going in the fireplace. I have lots of old radio shows on CD so I play them during our little Tea.
I usually make some small tea sandwiches, nothing messy mind you, and we all crochet while we sip our tea. Cookies are a must also. During this time we get a chance to chat and also see our friends latest projects and of course we get to browse the latest mags and copy new patterns if we like. This is a quiet time with your friends so keep it simple and enjoy the time you have together.

Make Shift Finger Splint
For a make shift finger splint, cut out the handle part of a Cascade dishwashing detergent bottle, cut a hole in part that goes toward your wrist, and hold it on with a bread wrap twist wrapped around the area just above your knuckle. I've been wearing this all morning following my finger surgery yesterday, and I haven't bumped it once.

Durable Lunch Bag
A very durable lunch bag can be made by turning a Splenda 9.7 lb bag inside out. My husband calls it his retirement bag, since he knows he'll probably see it until he retires in two years.

Beautiful Lace Placemats
Buy some beautiful lace placemats or cut some from an old lace panel or from an old curtain. Lay out a piece of clear contact paper and cut it a little larger than the lace. Slowly peel the backing off the clear contact paper and adhere the lace. Now lay on some dried flowers or old pictures and ribbons and cover with another piece of contact paper.

Homemade Cards and Stationary with Flowers and Leaves
Want to make a great gift that will remind you of spring all winter long? Go out and remove the last of your pansies and daisies and press them in a book. You know that lacy looking weed that took over? Well go pick some of those leaves and press them also. Just don't pick the poison ivy. :)
Now take some card stock and cut it down to the size you would like. Walmart sells invitation size envelopes and these work really well. Gently glue the flowers onto the cards then cover them with clear contact paper. These make a lovely gift for a grandmother or anyone else that loves to receive a special card.

Uses for Plastic Clothing Hangers
When purchasing clothes and the cashier asks if you want the plastic hangers say, "Yes." Keep both the shirt and pant hangers.
I keep these hangers and take them on vacation with me. They're great for drying bathing suits and trunks on the shower rod or "steaming" a wrinkled shirt in the hotel bathroom. Most hotel hangers are permanently attached to the rod to prevent theft.
Also, if these plastic hangers get broken or left behind I don't feel bad.

Using Junk Mail Envelopes
Do you get a lot of white envelopes coming through your post box? Well don't throw them away, cut them up and use to write your shopping lists on.
By Maria UK
Editor's Note: Or you can keep the envelopes together and put your coupons in the them.

Thrifty Drink Container
If you want to take a cold drink in the car, I found a very thrifty container. I use a large cottage cheese or sour cream container with the lid. Just cut an X in the lid with a kitchen knife and insert a straw. Much less likely to spill than an open container.

Decorate With Old Buttons
Decorate with buttons by gluing them to a lamp shade, picture frame or clock. Use wire cutters to clip off the shank of any buttons that have them. Be careful that the pieces you clip don't fly off and hurt you. I close my hand around it to keep it from flying, or you could wear safety goggles.

Coupon Cutter on the Fridge
I glued a magnet (a free one advertising something) to a free plastic "coupon cutter" that has a blade in it. I keep it on the top edge of the fridge (out of reach of little fingers) where it is always handy to open plastic bags of food.

Extending the Life of Your Iron
Every once in a while it is a good thing to run some diluted vinegar (Diluted with water) through your steam iron this will remove rust and mineral build-up.

Recycling Old Binders
Remove all of your old papers and donate these to your elementary school. The teachers and principal may be able to use them. Your local library may be able to use them as well.

Homemade Laundry Soap Blunder
I just made my first batch of laundry soap (fels naptha, washing soda, borax combo). After sitting for 24 hours, it didn't gel up like it should have. Instead, it serparated into liquid with a waxy, 1 inch top (kinda looks like how fat rises on soup when refrigerated). What did I do wrong? Can it be fixed by re-heating the batch? I thought I followed the directions exactly.

Can you grow roses from seed?
Can anyone tell me if you can grow roses from seed. I have been gardening for a few years and only just the other day noticed seeds falling from my rose bush. I did not know roses even had seed.
Thanks,
Sharyl
