Go to any swimming pool supply store.
We used it to put around our flowers and plants that slugs love, it stopped them in their tracks. I'm reading that it is good for other pests as well.

Diatomaceous Earth is used in some types of swimming pool filters, therefore it is readily available at swimming pool supply dealers. (07/12/2004)

Home Depot has it, check the garden department. They did warn us that it also kills the good bugs such as earthworms. We decided not to use it. (07/13/2004)

I didn't know it killed the good bugs, thanks for the info. But I just sprinkle it on ant hills & around the perimeter of the outside of my house. I haven't seen any dead good bugs or worms. It's also one of the few things you can use inside safely. (07/13/2004)

Warning! I just read on another site that you don't want to use diatomaceous earth that is for swimming pools: "DE sold for swimming pool filters is ineffective for insect control because it has been heated and chemically treated. It won't kill insects and it is very dangerous to breathe."
Also, if you are using DE for garden insect control, be careful, because it will kill beneficial insects too! Don't use it too often. (07/19/2004)

You should not use swimming pool DE. It is heat-treated, which causes a change to the powder that makes it more dangerous for humans. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diatomaceous_earth

Good Bugs, Bad Bugs
You can use "beneficial nematodes" for the yard. I read that they eat the larvae of bad insects, not the good ones. I'm planning on using that in the yard and DE in the house! (01/18/2007)

Is diatomaceous earth readily available in Central Mexico? Is it a locally produced material, or must it be imported?
Editor's Note: The Aztecs used to use it so it must be available in Mexico.

WARNING: Please make sure you distinguish the difference between
"Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth" and "Pool Grade Diatomaceous Earth".
Food-grade Diatomaceous earth is safe to use around pets and children and indoors with animals, while pool grade is toxic to pets and even humans!

Make sure that if you plan on ingesting diatomaceous earth, that it is labeled as "food grade". Otherwise, it is larger shards and can tear at the intestinal lining. (02/01/2009)
