How do you close off messenger pop up page on Windows 7?

If you plan not to use it at all, go to the control panel and in the add/delete programs, scroll down to the messenger and click out delete. This is what I have done.
You should have a messenger icon at the bottom of your desktop. Right click on that and hit close program. This does not delete it if you plan to use it again but it will get it off the page.
