Dollar Origami Hearts

When were were at a Chinese Buffet, I noticed several Origami hearts clipped over a glass at the checkout counter. The little Chinese waitress handed one to me to see. It was so neat!

On one side, you can insert a coin (no idea why, other than as a weight if you use it as a bookmark?), the back side clips over a page but it's soo neat. I traded her $2 for 2 of the hearts. I've been trying to take a picture of it but it keeps turning out blurry. Here are instructions on You Tube

Maggie May (Golden Retriever Mix)

Maggie May Maslowski is about 9, we think. She is a gold retriever mix mutt. We saved her from a fate worse than death from the Animal Care shelter in Oldham County, KY. Our daughter Karas wrote a persuasive letter from school and we fell for it.

She loves walks, treats and going to grandmas. Maggie is the sweetest dog, I love her SO much! She is afraid of any loud noises, including thunderstorms or firecrackers. She is also afraid of her bed and will NOT sleep on it, preferring the floor

Beware of Telephone Calls Asking For Your Email

I just had this happen this morning and I wanted to let you all know about it. I had a man with a very thick accent call my cell phone from HSBC - London. I have an auto loan from HSBC so I wanted to make sure it was not about that.

He was very hard to understand but asked for my email address because a man with my same last name had died with no next of kin. Now, my husband and I made up a brand new last name when we got married by combining our middle names so there is no way we have any unknown relatives with the same name.

I told him that I don't give out my email address for business matters and I would be happy to give him my office address for any correspondence by mail. I then asked how he got my personal cell phone number. This is when he hung up.

I just wanted to let you all know that this is happening so you can be on your guard. I don't know why they would want your email address but probably for some sort of scam email. You would get the message, remember the call and think it was more legit.

Thanks and don't give out your email address to anyone you don't know or trust.

Jess

Use Old Holiday Bulbs In Nightlights

I haven't had to purchase bulbs for our night lights for years. To make this happen, I saved all the holiday bulbs from our old strings of lights when I switched to mini's. The old colored bulbs fit right into the night light bulb sockets and the light is slightly dimmer so it is just enough to enable you to get around in the dark and not so bright it keeps you from falling asleep.

Use Small Containers In Lunchbox

Here's a tip that's easy on the wallet and the environment. I use small plastic containers for my son's lunchbox instead of plastic bags. For nonperishable food like chips or cookies, I use the same container all week. It saves space in the dishwasher and wear and tear on the container, plus I don't spend time looking for a matching lid!

My Frugal Life: Frugal And Green Laundry

I just can't justify wasting warm water and soap so I often plan for at least two loads of laundry and reuse the wash water from the first load to do the second load. (Or even the third) I have a large garbage can and a couple of pails handy that I keep in my laundry room strictly to use as my suds saver equipment. If I wash a load of light clothes like white t-shirts, I will leave the lid up while the washer is washing to prevent the cycle from draining the water. My machine needs the lid down for draining and spinning. My Frugal Life

When I am ready with the hose in the large container I will put the lid down and set the cycle to drain the hot soapy water into my containers. I replace the hose into the pipe so I don't also catch the rinse water into my saved soapy water. (It would also overflow!) I keep a small sieve to scoop the lint that seems to swirl to the centre of the saved water as my machine has feature that empties the lint with the wash water so I screen it out before I reuse the water. (If there is any lint) I also hang an empty water softener bag on the taps to recycle as a garbage bag.

When the load of laundry is finished and I am ready to wash the next load I use a smaller pail to scoop the water to fill the machine with my saved warm, soapy water. This is great exercise. I also have a wringer washer that I sometimes use if I want to soak something or speed up washing clothes by washing two loads at once. Saving your wash water, if it is not too dirty to use again will save on soap, save on the gas to heat the water and save on water.

I always turn the shirts and sweaters inside out before washing them so the deodorant washes off better and there is less wear and tear on the decals on printed t-shirts. My oldest son actually told me about this. He also said to never dry his shirts because I shrink them so if I use the dryer I always take them out while damp. I also turn the pants inside out for washing.

I mix my soap and water before adding the clothes by setting the level to minimum and after it agitates I reset it to high to finish filling as I add my clothes.

My favourite laundry soaps are Wonderwash, Country Save, Nellies and I often add some Borax or Pink Solution. I recently bought some Ecos from Costco, which is also an environmentally friendly HE laundry soap. In the summer, I hang the clothes outside. Just before the t-shirts are dry, I take a handful of braided hangers to hang them on to make room on my lines for more clothes. The pin marks also seem to disappear. If they don't, a light spritz of water will relax the wrinkle. In the winter, I will fluff them in the dryer and then hang them on my braided hangers to finish drying. I bought foldable laundry umbrellas from Regal Gifts for drying. The t-shirts then go directly into the closets to eliminate folding. I hang the heavy jeans by the bottom of the legs, one leg on each side of the towel rack held by two clothespins. I have two towel racks so there is plenty of room and the bathroom is the warmest room for drying.

I never use fabric softeners as they just coat your clothes and towels and they will not be absorbent. Why wash them if you are going to grease them up again? It also coats your dryer so it is best to "Never" use any at all. Dryer sheets are also the cause of "streaky windows" if you use cloths dried with softeners to dry your windows. My boys have also mentioned that they are not itchy any more since I have quit using dryer sheets. Our family is also healthier and have had fewer colds. Those scented products might hinder your immune system. I know that I cannot sleep if I visit someone's house overnight that has used dryer sheets or scented laundry soap.

In the summer when I am really ambitious, I will even save the rinse water and carry it outside for my trees, grass, flowers and garden. I have also carried out some of the soapy water to splash on the vines on my garage to rid them of aphids. (dishsoap as well)

My house faces north so I tied yellow ropes in the front to use as lines and also in the back of my house. In the summer, I like to mostly be in the front yard and in the fall the sun shines best behind the house so I use my lines in the back yard. Sometimes it is too windy in the front so I'll use the ones in the back. (or visa versa) While hanging clothes I set my basket on a lawn chair so I can shake all of the shirts out, and drape them over the chair ready for hanging. I also have two ironing boards. I keep one handy to give me extra counter space outside for folding clothes. (or even doing vegetables on) You can set it to any height if you are sitting or standing.

As you can tell I enjoy laundry and all of the games that I can play doing it. (My boys tease me and ask me if I am playing my laundry games again, ha ha)

I mentioned "Pink Solution" as one of my favorite products. It can be used as laundry soap, carpet shampoo, jewelry cleaner, added to dish soap to give your dishes a shine like you've never seen and give dishwashing a whole new experience, (it quickly soaks anything off of your dishes) added to dishwasher soap for superb shine again, in the carwash bucket with water to wash a car and have it look like you just waxed it, (I do this often in the rain so the rain rinses the car) (chrome bumpers and hub caps too) wash your white runners to give them that new look again, to wash my boat and boat windows so there is no water spotting, to clean my folding shower doors and marble tub surround, to clean my ceran top stove and other appliances, to clean yellow fur balls off my white carpet, to clean house windows so clean that they are invisible, to make my mirrors glow and my list goes on. It is my number one product that I would not be without! It is safe for any job and the environment.

One last hint of mine is with borax. I dissolve some in a spray bottle with water to use as a freshener for carpets before I vacuum, on the litter box to cut the litter dust and on my furnace filter to freshen the air.

There are websites for all of my favourite products. Easy to search and find. All well worth your while. I can't say enough good things about them.

My favourite dishcloth is the micro fibre cloth with mesh on one side and micro fibre on the other side. It is great for scrubbing or wiping. Their matching tea towels are also the best. I keep some for dishes, windows, and dusting and for the car. I sew two together to make a big one for drying dishes. They are cheap and available at Giant Tiger. Some people don't like them because if you have rough hands or nails they tend to grab.

To keep my hands soft I use rubber gloves to protect them and Beeswax skin cream for a moisturizer. (Beeswaxskincream.com) I use this on my face as well. After many products this is my one "must have". Great for my face, lips, hands and I have even given this as baby gifts for diaper rash prevention and cure. I am getting off topic but this is to keep in line with all of the other products that I use that are healthy for sensitive skin.

I could go on about my pots and pans, mixers, waffle iron, steam iron and flour mills. I will try to find another thread for those. Thanks for reading and I hope that I have given you a few ideas to try or research. I'd be glad to help you find websites or more info anytime. I braid my own hangers and crochet my own pot scrubbers and have hints on those too.

Store Patterns In Ziplock Bags

When I purchase a pattern and cut it out, instead of trying to fit all the folded up pieces back into the pattern envelope, I use Gallon Size Ziploc Bags to place the pattern pieces into it. Where the place is on the bag that you are able to write what is in the ziploc, I write the number of the pattern, and then I place the pattern envelope facing out. This way I know what pattern number pieces go into the ziploc, I can see what pattern it is, it keeps the pattern pieces in better condition that trying to stuff them back into the envelope. I store all the ziploc bags into hand held shopping baskets.

Lowfat "Grilled Cheese"

A lowfat way to be able to enjoy a "grilled cheese sandwich and tomato soup" is to toast the bread then add cheese and microwave 30 seconds or until the cheese melts! You don't have to load down with the butter and it's still very enjoyable!

Dr. Bronners Magic Soap

I put diluted Dr. Bronner's Magic Soap in an old foam soap dispenser. Using the foam dispenser makes the diluted soap a lot easier to use. The kids love using foamy soap! In the kitchen I use it for everything; washing hands, cleaning countertops, even washing dishes.

Decorative Things To Make On A Budget

Take old glass bottles (i.e mayo bottles) and pour water resistant paint into them, put the lid back on and swivel the paint around in the bottle to cover the glass. Leave it to dry and you have colourful and cheap vases! Enamel works well!

Another tip is to take tin cans and to either leave them plain or stick a nice piece of paper on them to make a nice flower pot, pen holder or container!

Also you can get frames from the second hand store or from a discount store and spray paint them to look expensive! Also using wood varnish can give an interesting look!

Making Cake Mixes Taste "From Scratch"

To make cake mixes taste like cakes made "from scratch":

  • White Cake: Add 1/4 cup cooking oil to the cake mix.
  • Chocolate Cake: Add 1/4 cup sour cream to the cake mix.
I have found that these tips work especially well with Duncan Hines cake mixes.

Source: I have had this tip for years, and as far as I can recall, it was given to me by a friend of my mother's.

Options for Unjamming a Drawer

I have a VERY OLD (over 100yrs) antique mahogany sideboard. something has jammed inside one of the drawers and it won't open. The back of the sideboard is a solid whole wood panel (about 3ft by 4ft)the underside of the drawer where the drawer itself sits, is also a solid wood panel so taking out the drawer underneath is useless. How can I get the drawer to open (it only opens about 1/4") completely to free whatever is jamming inside it without damaging it? Its a very valuable piece of furniture and short of taking it apart (which is not an option) I don't know what to do! Does anyone have any suggestions, PLEASE!

Training a Dog That Was Abused

The 1 yr. old abused dog we adopted thinks he can sit on the living room sofas. I chased him off one sofa, so he went to the other sofa. I scolded him, so he went back to the first sofa. You get the idea. I even brought out to the living room his comfy stuffed cushion that lined the crate. He walked up to it and looked at it. I praised him. He walked away. A few minutes later he got on the sofa again. Repeat performance. My daughter has fussed at him for the same sofa thing.
So how do we get the message across that the sofas are off limits while he's still learning to trust us?

Blue Cross vs Medicare

I will be 65 in Feb '08, my husband May '08. I'm retired Federal Civil Service and carried Blue Cross family into retirement. I'm confused about Medicare. Do we HAVE to have Medicare? That will mean we must pay our regular Blue Cross Ins. PLUS $96 each per month for Medicare? Are there any other retired federal workers out there who could give me some insight (i.e. do we drop BC and pick up a "supplemental" coverage or should we keep the BC "secondary" Ins.?) I can't believe the BC premium won't go down since Medicare will be the Primary Ins. and BC Secondary Ins. But BC says the monthly premium (taken from my retirement check) will be the same and not lowered at all. I'm afraid to drop BC because that's what pays for our medications.

Craft Fake Snow Paste

How do you make Craft Fake Snow Paste? I researched this web site throughly to find out how to make some fake snow paste for using in craft projects on wood and metal surfaces. I put in lots of key word phrases but only found two that I could find. One said to use epson salts, Elmer's glue and a tiny bit of water, that was a total loss for it turned to goop. I need it to be pasty and gritty so i can spread it with a wooden craft stick and then when it dries it ends up hard. Walmart no longer sells this type snow paste in there craft department at all. And I need to finish a lot of wooden snowmen and Santa figures using it on them by next week. So if any one has the recipe for this can you please tell me asap?

Christmas Gift for Son's Teachers

I need help on some inexpensive gifts for my son's teachers. I have typed a short story in smaller print in order to fit on 2 pages of copy paper (used card stock for better quality), then inserted an appropriate picture at the end. He has 10 teachers, and I've made each picture different. My problem now is how to frame or display the pages to give as a gift. I had originally thought of buying double hinged 8 x 10 picture frames but am now wondering if I'll be able to find enough inexpensive ones. I've checked at our local dollar stores with no luck. I've also thought of making wooden plaques but don't know if I'll have time to do this. I'd like for it to be able to be hung on the wall. Does anyone have any other ideas?
