Today's Tips

Suction Cup Tips

The suction cups with a clip that are used to hold Christmas lights to windows can also be used as a holder for the flag stick on a 12"x18" flag. They can also be used to hang sun catchers, ornaments or other decorative items on a window, on a refrigerator or on any smooth surface.

AAA for Travelers

If you have someone you love who needs to travel a lot, I would suggest giving them a AAA membership for Christmas. It is very economical and something they may have to use more than once throughout the year. My sister gives her kids and their families memberships each year for Christmas and she often gives this as a gift for weddings. Seems like a very original idea to me!

Cleaning A Clogged Drain Tips

Tips for clearing a stubborn or clogged drain. Post your ideas.

For Clear Drains

For slow-running drains, shake a half a box of baking soda down the drain, then dump in one cup of vinegar. It will bubble and foam like crazy -- when the foaming stops, flush the drain with very hot water for 2-3 minutes. Cheap and easy!

By Becki in Indiana

To clear a clogged drain, try this simple technique before using a chemical product. Pour 1/2 cup of salt down the drain followed by boiling water. Continue to flush with very hot tap water. Until the clog breaks.

Negotiate CD Rates

I found out that on larger amounts of money, CD Rates can be negotiated. They have a margin they can work with. They don't tell you this.

I had two CD's coming due out of state and on the due date got the new renewal rate and shopped it locally. Negotiated with a local institution, then called the other institution back while in their office telling them I was going to redeem the CD unless they could meet the rate I could get locally. They did say they could increase the quoted renewal rate, but they could not match the rate quote I got, they have a certain margin to work with.

When CD's are coming due, check all institutions and keep ads. When talking with the bank representative for their rates, then you can ask if they can match other ads. Sometimes they have to check and get back with you, and had them call me back and say they could give me a little higher rate than what I asked if they could match!

Regifting Tip

When you receive a gift that is not suitable for you, be sure to make a note of who gave it to you originally. Don't regift it to someone that knows the original gift giver OR regift to the person who gave it to you, too embarrassing!

Be sure there is no trace of an old card in the gift you are passing on.

Seldom Used Flash Light - Keep Batteries Seperate

You don't want dead batteries when you need to use your flashlight, especially, in an emergency situation. Keep the batteries in a Ziplock bag attached to the flashlight, then they are handy to put in so you will have a working flashlight.

Get New Money For Gifts

If you are going to give a gift of money, see if the bank can get you new bills.

For a gift, I got 2 bundles ($100.00 each) bundles of new sequential numbered dollar bills. My plan is to fluff it out in a gift box and wrap it. I call that spreading your money around! A little different than just putting two large bills in a gift card.

Crisp new money would also be good to use for a MONEY TREE.

Upgrading Your Operating System

If you are going from Windows 98 to XP, before you buy your new computer with a new Windows Program, get a library book and start reading up on the new Windows. That way you won't be overwhelmed when the new XP Windows doesn't work the same as your old 98 Windows. A lot of times you can renew the book until someone else makes a request for it.

By Syd

Editor's Note: Another good thing to do whenever you get a new program or operating system is to sit down and read the manual. It's not fun reading but it certainly will enhance your understanding of the program's features.

Uses for Coffee Mugs

It seems easy to collect a lot of coffee mugs without even trying. What are some creative used for coffee mugs? Post your ideas.

Too Many Coffee Mugs?

They are great to use in your craft room, to hold scissors, pencils, pens, glue bottle, colored markers, etc. In the kitchen under the sink, store your dish brush, bottle brush, plastic scrubby, wet sponge, etc.

Make Your Own Bird Seed

Make your own bird seed by saving the pulp and seeds from squash and other vegetables and spread it thinly on a plate or tray. Then leave the tray in a gas oven overnight. The pilot light generates enough heat to dry the pulp and make it easy to pick out the seeds. If you have a pilotless gas oven or an electric one, you can dry the seeds by setting the oven at its lowest temperature and heating them for several hours.

Preventing Moldy Cheese in the Refrigerator

No more moldy cheese in the refrigerator: moisten a paper towel with a bit of cider vinegar and wrap it around your wedge of cheese; then place the wrapped cheese in a plastic bag and seal. The acid in the vinegar will keep mold away. If the paper towel dries out, moisten it with a bit of water-vinegar solution.

Storing Baking Powder

Don't keep baking powder for more than one year, as it loses its potency. To check whether your baking powder is still usable, add 1 teaspoon of it to 1/3 cup of hot tap water. The mixture should bubble vigorously.

Decoarting Ideas For An Outdoor June Wedding Reception

My daughter is getting married in June 2005. We are having a simple reception (cake, punch, fruit/veggie trays, finger foods). We will be having the wedding/reception outdoors around noon (the time hasn't been set in stone as of this writing). The wedding will take place in a beautiful field.

My problem is I need suggestions on how to decorate the pavillions where the reception wil be held. I have suggested using tulle and fabric in her wedding colors (yellow/white) to drape the beams, even an ivy/flower combo. She is not very impressed with either idea. She has specific ideas about every aspect of this day except for the pavillion decor (She does, however know that she wants the tables to be dressed in white linen with a yellow/white gingham runner. She will also be setting the tables with simple daisy centerpieces)

I am running out of ideas and time. June will be here before I know it. I am open to and will appreciate any and all suggestions.

Tsunami Relief - School Teacher Looking For Ways For Kids To Raise Money

Being a good stewart of our money and resources also means giving to the needy. I am a high school teacher looking for ways to help raise funds for an orphanage in Sri Lanka that my classes have adopted as of today. The orphans are all safe from the horrific Tsunami but the orphanage buildings and campus were tragically destroyed and no doubt the number of orphans that will be needing accomodations will drastically grow in the near future.

I am looking for suggestions that will help me show my students that if many give a little, you can still end up with a lot. We are looking for ideas that will not target the community at large (they are already saturated by all manner of school fundraisers). I am hoping the students will give of their own like pop cans, brown bag for a day or two and give up their lunch money, baby sitting earnings for a day, etc...

If you have any ideas that have been successful for you please post them. I am hoping that we can send support to this orphanage for the years to come.

Thank you for your time everyone.

Need Ideas For 6 Year Old Boy's Indoor Birthday Party

Heya gals! (Editor's Note: Don't forget the guys!.) I need some ideas for my soon to be 6 year old's birthday party. I was just going to have a family get together but he wants a birthday party. We are new to this area (1.5 months) so I am not that familiar with the kids in his class and the ones I have met are "rowdy". I am unsure what to do.

It is usually snowing here so outdoors is out of the question. I have a small house so that is out too. I can get a large birthday room for free *yay* so that is not a problem. What kind of theme should I use? What games and how many should I plan for? How many children should I invite? Should it be a boys only or the whole class?

A friend suggested a sleepover, but I feel he is too young for that. We live a rural area too so if a little one got upset, it takes a while to travel here. He loves the outdoors (deer, ATV's, etc) and he loves Army Men, go figure! I am alone on this project as I have no friends here to help me out. The last party was a disaster, the parents did NOT watch their children and I was all alone trying to wrangle 15 little ones ages 3-4. NOT FUN, I couldn't enjoy my son...

Any ideas, suggestions, comments would be helpful. His birthday is Jan. 27th!

Thanks so much,

Missy
