Crocheted Diaper Bag Accessories

Traveling with a baby means an extra bag to tote. If that bag is not organized, changing baby can be quite a challenge. I have designed three original pieces to go into your diaper bag. They are lightweight and can come in quite handy.

Dottie At Four Months (Dalmation)

This is Dottie, our Dalmatian! She's 19 lbs at 15 weeks. Almost four months! She's as sweet as she looks! Her eyes are baby blue and will never change.

Her spots are still coming and growing just like her. She comes from a long line of champions. We plan to train her well and teach her tricks but we'll leave the ring to the professionals! Maybe show her off on our daily walks and travels!

She loves to go for walks and is becoming very social on our walks! A true joy in our family.

Refurbishing a Dresser

This dresser happens to be over 30 years old and was a hideous shade of brown. I simply painted the entire dresser white and removed all of the previous hardware. The knobs were purchased for about $3 for a bag of 12 or so. The decorative middle is a wooden square with another wooden knob glued onto the middle. This is now in my daughter's room.

Two Buck Chuck - Cheap Wine

If you have a party or just like to drink wine, try 2 Buck Chuck from Trader Joe's. Great tasting and, for $2.00, it a deal. Prices do vary so in your area it may go for $3.00 or $4.00. It's from the Charles Shaw Winery.

Take Digital Photos To Spot Check Your Cleaning

The best way I have found to ensure a spotless house is to go though it with a digital camera in hand, snapping pics. Upload them and then look for all your eye missed! Amazing!

Lottery For Charitable Donations

My husband and I get a lot of calls for money (charities) over the phone. Instead of saying no or refusing to talk to these people, we ask them to send a form for their request. Then we say we'll put it in our lottery. Our lottery works like this: when I pay the regular bills, I take all the donations and put them in a pile. When I'm done paying bills and if I have enough money left over, I go through the donation stuff and pull one out at random. This is the one I donate to. It isn't always the same one and I feel like we're doing our part to help other people. I never pledge money over the phone. Works for us. Thanks.

Sonic Mole Repeller To Deter Dogs

My neighbor's dog barks 24 hours a day when they go out of town. Nobody will call the police because we are all afraid of the owner. After trying many solutions, I bought a sonic dog bark stopper which cost $40+ and did not work. He barks 3 feet from my bedroom window (it's where the fence is) so I don't get any sleep and earplugs are useless. I accidentally discovered a solution. A sonic mole/gopher repeller from Harbor Freight tool store. It beeps about every minute or so and apparently he does not like the sound. I place it under my window and I can hardly hear it. It does not stop him barking but it keeps him away from my window.

Linen Spray For Ironing

If you, like me, still have things you will not wear without ironing, I have an idea that will make the chore a little more pleasant. For the past several years, I have been spraying the clothes with scented linen spray as I iron them. It adds a pleasing scent and makes the job a little easier.

Making Do With Less In the Kitchen!
By Cyndi Roberts

Making do with less versus making more money: another definition for "frugal"! Here are some ideas to help you make do with less in the kitchen!

  • Stretch a meatloaf by adding oatmeal, or rice.

  • Always try to make your oven do double-duty when you heat it up. Bake some potatoes alongside those cookies, or biscuits with the meatloaf, etc. Or simply cook two pies or roasts instead of one. The second goes in the freezer for another time.

  • When boiling potatoes always save the water. If you're making mashed potatoes, use it instead of part of the milk. Or, you can cool it and water your houseplants.

  • Save up to $1.00 per pound on boneless chicken breasts by doing the boning yourself using a sharp knife.

  • Learning to cut up a whole chicken can save you money, too. All you need is a good sharp knife and a little practice.

  • If you have freezer space, buy an extra turkey at Christmas or an extra ham at Easter when they are on sale, probably at the lowest price all year!

  • Learn to grow your own herbs. Just a few pots of herbs growing on your kitchen windowsill can help out the budget. Swap cuttings with friends.

  • Plan one meatless meal per week. Assuming you used 1 pound of meat at $2.00 per pound, cutting one meal per week for one year would save $104.00!

  • When shopping for groceries, don't assume that just because the grocery store has an item prominently displayed with the price in big letters that it is automatically a "good price". Know your prices or keep a grocery price book.

  • Make your own self-rising flour. For each cup of flour in a recipe, add 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder and 1/2 teaspoon salt.

  • Out of baking powder? Use 1 teaspoon baking soda plus 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar for each teaspoon of baking powder called for.

  • Never buy bottled juice that says "from concentrate". Buy frozen concentrated juice and add your own water.

Smoothing a Rough Cement Patio

Last year we had a cement patio poured in back of the house. They insisted on "brooming" it, making little grooves which I protested but they did it anyhow. Is there any way to sand that down so it is smooth? Also, my husband was repairing the lawn mower on the patio and spilled oil and/or grease on it. He insisted on cleaning it by using Gojo, water and a wire brush, despite everyone's advice NOT to do that. Now our new patio looks awful! Any suggestions? It isn't in spots where I could cover it with lawn furniture or planters either. I am sick about it.

Camping Food Ideas

Any food ideas for camping. My family bought a camper last year, and at the end of the season we were tired of eating Hot Dogs and Hamburger's. We do not have a lot of storage, as it is a Pop Up, with a small fridge. Any recipes, suggestions would be appreciated. I have a picky one, that will not eat fish, so ideas that don't include fish would be great.

Thank you,

Bleach Stain on Viscose

I have a blue top made of viscose that I am really fond off and have just noticed three small spots that look like bleach on my top. How can I get rid of it? I have tried using a stain removing powder but to no avail. Does anyone have any recommendations please. Would turps (white spirit) be of any use? Thanks for your help.

What kind of a bird is this?

What kind of a bird is this? He's so gorgeous! The picture doesn't seem to bring out the colors like they showed in real life. He's got bright reddish pink on his head and chest. I looked out the window one day and saw a bird in our tree, it looked like a miniature parrot, it was so cute. I grabbed my camera but couldn't get very good pictures. Just wondered if any "bird lovers" knew what it was.

Thanks!

Building a Rental

A few years ago I was at a friend's house and her family was having a few financial problems. Her parents had come up with the idea of buying a shed and converting it into a studio apartment. Which they now rent out for 500.00 a month. I think this is an excellent idea. The only problem is I need ideas on getting started and floor plans. Does anyone have any ideas? Let me know.

Thanks,
Amanda

Sunflowers For My Wedding

I'm getting married in sept or Oct of 2008 and I would like to grow sunflowers as placecards for my reception. I know it's not sunflower season but I have a room in my house sourounded by glass that my plants THRIVE in and I have a very green thumb. I will be transporting them the day of the wedding to West Virginia. Do you have any tips on growing, transporting and how long will they last once cut and should I freeze or refridgerate them before I cut the heads off?

Thanks so much, God bless.

Training a Lilac Bush

I have a three-year old lilac bush that is growing in the wrong direction since I accidentally planted it at a slight angle. Can I use wire to retrain the branches to stand up straight? They'll grow into the fence if I let them continue in the direction they're currently pointed. Thanks!
