Reupholstering Patio Chairs
I have 2 club chairs (similar in style to pic posted, but the cushions are thicker and not removable) that I found for free. I desperately need to reupholster them because there have tears in the existing fabric, which is an awful design and color.

Does anyone have any tips or ideas for me? Obviously I don't want to spend a lot of money, but I do want them to be more comfortable and appealing. I've never done any fabric projects before and can only sew by hand. I'd really appreciate some help here.

Thank you everyone for all the feedback!

I don't know how my post got called "Reupholstering Patio Chairs" -- my chairs are living room club chairs, not patio chairs, and the picture was the closest thing I could find to the actual chairs. Also, I forgot to mention that the existing fabric is a very yucky vinyl, so dyeing them is not an option. Yes, the chairs might not have been made in one piece but taking them apart now is a job for a carpenter. And although I like the idea of using beach towels, it doesn't go with the decor of my living room.

These club chairs were once part of the decor of an old motel... very 70s (floral patterned barf green & yellow vinyl -- I think my mom had a tablecloth very similar to it) but very sturdy. I will be take photos of the actual chairs and repost my request.

You could also use the towels of say a vinyl fabric and sew some elastic around the edges to fit over the existing cushions than you can remove them and wash when you want to.

Since the chairs were not created in one piece, they have to come apart somewhere! Look on the back rails, side supports for the seats, etc. until you find the screws. They may have wood caps (look like bumps) over them which you have to gently pry off. Then the upholstery is easy. Wrap fabric around the top/seat, stretch it tight, miter the corners and staple it where it won't show! On the backs you might have to put another full piece over the back of the backs to cover the raw edges. Then, put them back on the frames the way you took them off.

Or cover them with matching beach towels when you use them? Maybe you could secure them with some kind of decorative rope, or velcro. Would have to remember to get the towels in when it rains though.
Just a thought..

why not dye them. just tape off the wooden areas good with painters tape and then brush dye the color on.
