Daffodils in Bloom on Vancouver Island

Just wanted to share this picture of my daffodils blooming. They are earlier this year than normal, just like the hummingbirds came at least a week earlier too. We have had a wonderfull spring, but pretty dry. Usually Vancouver Island (British Columbia, Canada) gets more rain in the winter months, but this Feb. was sunnier & drier than on record. I have many different types of daffs, & they are all so unique & pretty, I couldn't choose which one I like best.

Today's Tips

Great Hand Lotion

I have very dry skin and have bought so many different brands of lotion (some pretty pricey.) This seems to work better than any of them. Enjoy!

Ingredients

(All these ingredients are Dollar General brand)

  • 1 petroleum jelly
  • 1 aloe vera lotion (green bottle)
  • 2 pink baby lotions
  • 2 vitamin E creams

Mix with mixer

You can repack in the jars you emptied or buy new ones if you can find them.

Use for Crystal Light Canisters

Tips for reusing Crystal Light containers. Post your ideas.

Crystal Light containers are very handy in my husband's shop area. The labels slice off very easily, and we use computer printable labels to make storage containers for larger than normal bolts, nails, etc. They would be great for crafts, beads, etc.

Leaving the Hospital Joke

Hospital regulations require a wheelchair for patients being discharged. However, while working as a student nurse, I found one elderly gentleman--already dressed and sitting on the bed with a suitcase at his feet--who insisted he didn't need my help to leave the hospital.

After a chat about rules being rules, he reluctantly let me wheel him to the elevator. On the way down I asked him if his wife was meeting him.

"I don't know," he said. "She's still upstairs in the bathroom changing out of her hospital gown.

Keeping Bugs from Sticking on the Car

If you're going on a car trip and know you're going to be driving through an area with a lot of bugs (like the south), spray some Pam cooking spray on your windshield and radiator grill to keep the bugs from sticking. You will have a much easier time washing them off!

Soap Scum on Shower Doors

To remove soap scum and mildew from shower doors, I tried everything, even Kaboom. Nothing worked until I used this, spray door with any advertised cleaner, clean with a piece of Brillo pad, wipe with a damp cloth or paper towel and eureka - it's clean and shining. It makes it an easy job.

Homemade Scoop

You know that funnel you made out of the 1/2 gal milk jug?! You can secure the lid back on it (use glue around the seal or something like duct tape) and you'll have a handy scoop to use around the house or garage. I use one for scooping and sprinking salt onto slippery sidewalks - disposable at the end of the season!

Cute Clay Pot Pincushion for a Gift

To make a cute pin cushion, take a small clay pot, and stuff with fiberfill very firmly - until overflowing. Tuck a scrap of fabric over it, forming a nice dome, and hot glue inside the rim of the pot.

You can decorate the rim of the pot with buttons, ribbons, satin roses, etc... Nice for Mother's Day!

Stopping Leg Cramps At Night

If you have leg cramps at nighttime, while trying to sleep. Keep a salt shaker on your nightstand. Once your leg cramp sets in, pour some salt into the palm of your hand and lick it. Your leg cramps should subside soon.

Quick & Easy Funnel

I use 1/2 gal milk containers. Cut off the base just below the handle, and use the top - flip it over and you have a handy funnel! My son showed me this tip and I've used them in the kitchen, especially when I'm trying to get large quantities of liquidy foods into back into jars, etc.!

Don't Let Your Car Run Out Of Gas

Don't ever let your car run out of gasoline as it will burn up the fuel pump that's inside your gas tank. If you do, it'll cost about $300.00 to $400.00 minimum to get it fixed.

Save on Cleaning, Don't Buy Suede

To save on cleaning bills and headaches, don't buy anything in suede! It seems that every issue of Daily Thrifty Tip has a request on how to get a stain out of suede. Suede must be accident-prone or something. LOL! :-)

Using It All - Spray Cleaners

I have a small 2 oz squirt bottle that I got as a free sample in the mail, it originally held cleaner. Now when I have a small amount of cleaner left in a large bottle, I pour it into my 2 oz bottle so that I don't waste a drop and I can use all of my cleaner!

Hard (Cold or Frozen) Butter Tip

If butter is too hard to spread, shave some with a veggie peeler.

Editor's Note: I ususally just toss the butter in the microwave for 5 to 10 seconds but I like this idea as well.

Hand Towel Tip Children

I bought extra large safety pins and pinned the hand towels on the towel bar. This way when younger ones dry their hands the towel doesn't end up in the floor! It also works pinning my decorative towels to their towel bars, so no one grabs them off to use after a bath.

Lining Pans with Foil

To easily line a baking pan with foil, turn the pan upside down and smoothe the foil on the bottom and up the sides of the pan being careful to form the corners as well. Then take the "formed" foil off the pan, turn the pan back over and it will fit perfectly inside the pan. No more pulling and ripping.

Canning and Preserving Pears - Recipes

I'm trying to find recipes for canning and preserving Pears. My Mom had several recipes that I loved as a kid but unfortunately she's gone now and no-one seems to know what happened to all her canning recipes. The ones I'm really interested in are as follows;

PEAR RELISH (SWEET) better than any sweet pickle relish I've ever tasted.

PEAR BUTTER, just like apple butter but very unique and delicious flavor.

Mom also had a way canning PEARS in their natural juices just like you'd buy in the store my attempts do duplicate her method have all failed miserably...

Thank You and God Bless,

Pit Bull Eating Grass

We are currently giving her milk that we bought at the store, the shops were closed down that sell dog milk. We are also potting training her everytime she finishes drinking her milk we take her out. Everytime we take her out she tends to eat grass, is that a good sign? Also if you know how to remove those little blacks bugs she has.
