Everyone's family has someone that's living in a nursing home. My mother-in-law's nursing home recently had a beauty pageant for the residents. They had their hair done, got to dress up with jewelery and make-up. It was a big event! The cafeteria was decorated with flowers and balloons, there was an announcer. Of course, there was a crown for the Beauty Queen, but all the contestants were given a small prize and a rose. What a difference it made in the morale at the nursing home. The anticipation alone, gave them all something to look forward to. Self-confidence is always there, you just have to remember to bring it out for all to see.If any of you have a loved one in a nursing home, don't be shy, suggest a beauty pageant. Hannah is a 2 1/2 year old Belgian Malinois. I got her from the mountains of Mississippi when she was eight weeks old. Hannah has no "off" button. She's shown here playing with her favorite Christmas gift last year, a bubble machine. She chases them until the batteries wear out! We've owned a few dogs over the years, but Hannah is the smartest. We can place one of her toys in a specific spot and she'll always find it. Example: "Where's red ball? In the kitchen?" and "Where's green ball? In your toy box?" She's as affectionate as she is bright and I can't imagine life without her. By PupperMom from Hollywood, FL Contest Contender!

Make An Automatic Computer Virus Alert You have probably heard of the computer viruses that will automatically send themselves to everyone in your email address book, there are several different ones out there. If someone opens or clicks a link in one of those emails, they can 'catch' the virus, too. If your computer gets such a virus, there is a way to send yourself an 'alert' so you will know you have it. Make a new entry in your email address book. For the 'Name', enter "Virus" and for the email address enter "YouHaveAVirus@virus.com". Now if your computer gets a virus that sends itself from your computer, it will also send to the YouHaveAVirus email address. Since there is no such email address, the email will come back to you as undeliverable and you will know your computer has a virus. By Amuck from Fairview Heights, IL Contest Contender!

Donating an Old Car to Charity Donating an old car to charity has many advantages to the community. The donor gets a valuable tax deduction on their itemized federal return. The charity gets some much needed money to help fund their programs. The community gets a gas guzzling, polluting car off the road. It all sounds simple. It is simple if you know how to do it correctly. Here's some advice to consider before just blindly handing over the title to your car. Find how much money the charity will receive. If you are dealing with a car donation center, ask them how much of the actual sale price the charity will receive. The term "net sale price" means the actual sale price minus auction fees, selling fees, or other fees charged by the center. In some cases, these fees may be more than the selling price of the car. If so, the charity may have to pay the donation center the difference. You won't know unless you ask! Always make a copy of your title. Know who you are giving your car to. You should either mail your title to the charity or hand it directly to the person towing your car after they give you a receipt. Never, just leave the title in the car! If you do, you may not get a receipt and therefore, will have no proof of your donation. If you live in a state where you are required to remove the license plates, make sure you do! You won't be able to cancel your car insurance until you have either transferred the plates to another car or returned them to the Department of Motor Vehicles. You won't be able to do either if you leave them on the car! Make sure you keep all the correspondence between you and the charity. If you don't, when you go to do your taxes, you'll find yourself calling around to the various charities to find out which one you donated your car to. White and Red Plastic Serving Plates for a Variety of Occasions I have found that buying plain plastic serving plates and platters at the dollar store are well worth the investment. I have bought them in white and in red. With two sons, it seems that many birthday themes incorporate red (baseball, Spiderman, etc.), and I also use them for Thanksgiving, Christmas, Valentine's Day, Memorial Day, 4th of July and Labor Day! Lots of red throughout the year - plus plastic is nice a light and easily transportable! By Heather from Severna Park, MD Contest Contender!

My friend's cat jumped at the chance to drink the water while it was running from a faucet. In fact, she refused to drink it any other way. The friend bought one of those cute little plug-in decorative waterfalls and set it on her hearth. Now the cat is happy and getting plenty of water, and she doesn't have to guard the faucet when she's using the sink. You cat owners know how persnickety they can be and how accomplished they are at getting their needs and wants taken care of. By Sandy from Elon, NC Contest Contender!

Over the past couple of months, I've been working with my brother and sister-in-law to design their home and it has been so fun. It's really coming together. Only a few accent pieces to go. The major items we added were a new sofa and area rug. Last Tuesday, about a week after the sofa was delivered, I got a call from Erin and her voice was shaking. Apparently, her darling 2 year old (really, he's darling) had just written all over the couch with Sharpies. (Why were there Sharpies hanging around, you ask? Erin, like all mothers, is diligent about hiding the Sharpies. This was a total freak accident and not even worth explaining.) I immediately called everyone I knew with microsuede furniture and had them call Erin with cleaning instructions and the instructions were universal: just scrub it. Just scrub and scrub and scrub and it will come out. Amazingly, it worked. There is no sign of the Sharpie. I was there and participated in the scrubbing and am a witness that micro suede is the ultimate "family" fabric. I am way impressed. On a related note: I know it all worked out, but I'm still wondering, what kind of world is this, when a new couch can't remain Sharpie-less for even a whole week? Save by Using Fresh Stir Fry Bag for Veggie Tray My daughter likes the variety of cut up vegetables that come in a large sectioned, nifty plastic, re-sealable container. It comes with a dip, and costs $8 to $12. I almost bought one for her today by Taylor Farms at Target Grocery Store. Then I noticed that it had pretty much the same veggies as the $3 bag of stir fry, also by Taylor Farms. For dinner, I shook the $3 bag of stir fry veggies out onto a plate, stuck a small dish of salad dressing for a dip, in the center in a glass bowl. Everyone was happy. :) Source: A sudden flash of inspiration By cookwie from Richardson, TX Post Feedback: http://www.thriftyfun.com/tf94848057.tip.html

Rate It: I bought some of those small plastic bins with a single drawers in them at Walmart for $2.50. I like to buy ground turkey, hamburger, grated cheeses and chicken breasts at Costco in bulk. Then I divide them and put them into baggies. Now in my freezer, each of these little bins hold either several baggies of cheese, several chicken breasts, or 1/2 pound bags of ground turkey, etc. This storage system keeps the food from freezer burn, and keeps the freezer neater. Rate It: Can someone suggest a neutral shade (white or other) to paint an entire loft? The ceilings are extremely high and I like the open and unified look. I have wallpapers that I like in the hallway and the bathroom. The one in the hallway is patternless and works fine. It gets compliments and it is a great background for art. Even the wallpaper with the pattern is neutral. I have a couple of oriental rugs, patterned dining room chairs and orange red living room furniture which is slowly fading, but I love the way that is happening. The walls are very high and the staircases are open. Maybe these details aren't helping. Are there general rules about when to use cool or warm neutrals? Rate It: I want to find a free vet clinic or very low cost vet for my cat in my area. She is an approximately 15 year old black Calico and has dropped weight and just stopped eating for the last few weeks. She has also had a fever for which we got antibiotics and now the fever is gone. I don't know why she had a fever to begin with, though she still doesn't eat on her own, and my mom force feeds her some milk and this cat food that we received. We have tried giving her fresh fish. We've noticed that she hasn't had a bowel movement either in last couple weeks, and she pees outside the litter box. I would like to find out what the problem is and to treat her. She's a wonderful cat and I want to see her eating again and gain a bit of weight. She's becoming really thin, but has a sagging tummy (my mother had overfed in the past and she looked like a seal. Now she's thinned out but has the sagging tummy going vertical, perhaps it's just sagging skin?) If I could find a free or low cost clinic I would take her. Please advise, means a lot to me. Rate It: My husband has horrible breath. Within the last several months I have noticed that his breath has progressively become worse. Let me first say that my husband is a smoker and also uses snuff. At first when my husband brushed his teeth it was gone. Now brushing isn't helping. When we are in the car it is disgusting (at times I can't tell if he has passed gas or if it is his breath). I have just recently had family members say something to me about it. I have researched some of the connections with people who suffer from halitosis and use tobacco products. Let me also mention that he suffers on occasion from indigestion and has always had problems with his sinuses. This is something else I have discovered that may also be contributing to his bad breath. Am I missing something here? I am really concerned for his health but cannot bear to hurt his feelings. Rate It: Low Maintenance Plant Suggestions We have recently renovated and added onto our 120 yr old farmhouse. Advice on annuals and perennials are welcome. Hardiness Zone: 5b By lostinthe from MO Post Feedback: http://www.thriftyfun.com/tf23977348.tip.html
