These contests are weekly. We pick 2 tip winners and 1 photo winner at the end of each week. Each winner will win $25!
Set Up a Kid Friendly Guest Room We rarely have overnight guests so I don't keep a guest room set up. But we have an 11 year old coming for the weekend soon with her grandfather. They will be staying in a hotel but the weatherman says it'll be raining and storming all weekend so she won't be able to go outside and play with my dogs like I had planned for her. Being 11, she won't be wanting to spend all her time with the grownups! So I set up a room for her. I broke down my craft room (took me all of 15 minutes to move my stuff into the other room) and took 2 single size air mattresses and stacked them on top of each other after blowing them up. I put a couple of pillows on it, and it's just like a couch in there now. I also went through our DVD collection and pulled out all the ones that are appropriate for her age and put them in there, along with a lot of different CD's and a portable CD player. I set up a TV and DVD player too. Now she'll have someplace that her and the dogs can go and get away from the adults and she can watch whatever movies or programs she wants or listen to whatever CD's she wants. And she can be comfortable too. Cricketnc from Parkton, NC Contest Contender!

I saw postings for Senior Discounts but just as rewarding, there are Military discounts given. You must show active or retired proof such as DD214 form which my husband has laminated and carries in the car. This will get you 10% discount at Lowe's and or Home Depot in our area. There is free info on military discounts if you search the Web, although some want to charge for the same that is available for free if you search. By Tarlo from Tampa Bay, FL Contest Contender!

They did a segment on TV the other day about how thieves are stealing cars with GPS's. Not only do they have your car but they can program your GPS to take them to right to your home. As soon as i heard about this, I took my GPS and reprogrammed my home address to an address I made up just down the road from me. They may have my car but they sure won't find out where I live! Designer Names at Thrift Shops About 12 years ago, I had to find a way to buy my husbands shirts. He was forever burning holes in them smoking. I decided to try a thrift store. I was embarrassed to go in but I did. WELL, I was so surprised at the people shopping there; well off and well heeled. I decided to look around after I got his shirts. I was shocked! I found a LL. Bean denim skirt for $4.00 with the tag still on and never been worn. I was, from that point on, a thrift store shopper. I have turned all my friends on to them. I have purchased designer clothes at a fraction of the cost. Most still have tags. Even if they don't, you can tell they have never or only been worn once. You have to haunt the stores but it is well worth it. On a recent trip I bought approx. $300.00 worth of clothes for $20.00. Happy Shopping! By Mary Ann from Weslaco, Texas Contest Contender!

Schedule a Heartworm Test for Your Dog I always love to look at the pet pictures posted on ThriftyFun. We had to put our Westie to sleep in November and that was one of the hardest things to do. We miss her dearly. If you're fortunate, and you have a healthy pet, you may not have to see your veterinarian more than once or twice a year for shots and a checkup. For even the healthiest of pets, though, right now is the best time of year to schedule an appointment for a heartworm test. This is overlooked way too often. Heartworms are parasites that infest a dog's or cat's heart and can be deadly. Heartworms are spread by mosquitoes, but you can protect your pets easily with monthly medication. The medication can be toxic if your pet already has heartworms, so it's of utmost importance to have your vet do a blood test before giving the meds. Many people keep their pets on heartworm medication year round and think a blood test isn't necessary. However, the test for heartworms can also show if your pet has Lyme disease and two other tick-borne diseases. So it's well worth giving to dogs and cats every year. Source: This is a suggestion from the humane society which I kept in my Westie's folder to remind me things I needed to do every year to help keep Lucy healthy. Product Review: Instant Mold and Mildew Stain Remover I was so frustrated due to the mold in my Maytag front loader. I found this website with so many others with the same complaint. I tried some of the suggestions and they did not work. I then went to the website traskresearch.com. I ordered several items; one being Instant Mold and Mildew Stain Remover. I immediately tried it on my front loader washer and IMMEDIATELY it removed the mold without scrubbing! It was such a wonderful feeling I called my husband and told him. He is always telling me not to order things because they won't work! I can't wait to try the other products I bought. The price was awesome, too. I am just so excited and pleased to find something after 5 years of complaining that nothing would work and my clothes never smelled fresh or clean. My sheets just finished washing so I can't wait to sleep on clean and fresh smelling sheets tonight. I did go spray my tubs/showers and the mold disappeared before my eyes! Rate It: I'm 38 and have always been fair skinned with dark hair and with red splotches on my face, including some acne. The acne is not that much of a problem as is the redness I have on my face. My cheeks, chin and forehead always look like I have a slight sunburn. I can't remember ever having even skin tone. Makeup doesn't stay on my face very well, so I'm always searching for a good makeup. I like the mineral powders as they don't aggravate my skin causing acne, but I have to re-apply it several times a day. I would really prefer to just not wear any makeup, but the redness makes me look horrible. Any suggestions on how to even out my skin tone so I don't have to wear foundation of any kind? Or am I just stuck with this type of redness for skin? Post Feedback: http://www.thriftyfun.com/tf57868372.tip.html

Rate It: The basement in our cottage became musty 2 summers ago when we were not available to dump the dehumidifier. Prior to that it was fresh and dry. There are no visible signs of mold or mildew. It is mostly painted cinder block with a painted floor covered with carpet remnants. We know that it needs be removed. The well is in the basement and you can see the sand around it so moisture will be an ongoing issue if the dehumidifier is not emptied regularly. Rate It: Wedding Reception on a Tight Budget I am so sick of talking about food for my upcoming wedding reception. I am getting married 8/22/09, my fiance and I have been back and forth about different, inexpensive food ideas for our reception. We are on a strict budget because we are paying for everything ourselves. I think it would be a good idea to have casserole type dishes with salad, rolls, fruit, relish trays, and a cheese nibbler tray. He feels we need to have a main meat dish with all the sides. I try to explain to him that it can get very pricey doing it that way. I am a very flexible person, any ideas where we could possibly incorporate a meat dish with out going over budget?
