Check your coupons to see if you can purchase the smallest size of an item. It may be that you save more per ounce, or package than if you bought the same item in a larger size. Also, check to match coupons with sales on the items you are looking to purchase.
Also, know the prices you generally pay. A certain brand of waffles are generally $.99 per package at my market. When they are "on sale" and featured, they mysteriously go up to $1.29 per package.
Recently there were coupons out there for those waffles for $.50 off per package. My store doubles coupons up to $.50, so the waffles were free.
Deodorant is another product that benefits from coupons and waiting to coordinate prices with sales. Just the other day I cut coupons for a particular brand of deodorant. This same week, the store advertised the deodorant on sale for 1/2 price, a penny less than the coupon amount. Hence - free deodorant.
Obviously, these are just the great examples. But you can save 50% or more on your bill by combining the sales with the coupons and stocking up on those weeks when the items are really cheap.
