Craft: Wedding Trellis Planters

Once again, I collected different planters, wire frames, silk flowers and ribbon when planning for my wedding this November. I created this out of a trellis that is planted in a fence. It had the greenery, but a lot was missing.

I spaced the leaves out, added small silk flowers, the ribbon around the fence with trim. Now it will adorn the cake table at my reception. I will mark the bottom with the name of one of the girls who is helping me decorate and clean up afterward. I will be doing this will all the items I make and use in my wedding, as a thank you to those who lent me a helping hand.

This saves me from having to buy something else for them and they get something to remember the event that I made myself. This piece cost roughly $1.75 to make.

Use Your Bathroom Towel Ring for Organizing

I was trying to de-clutter the bathroom counter, and looked up to see this towel ring and thought "I wonder if these would all fit?" and sure enough they did!

I was thinking you could also use these rings for scarves, necklaces, headbands, and just about anything that hangs.

Desi (Long Haired Tabby)

Desi is a 9 month old long hair tabby. Our old 20 year old cat had recently passed away, several months later, we found a man that was giving kittens away. We decided to get one from him (Reno). About a week later we decided to call him again to get the sibling. He told me he had already given them away, but the momma cat needed a home because he couldn't afford any cats. I couldn't say no to that request and we got the mom too.

A couple of weeks later, we noticed momma cat was getting fatter and fatter and fatter, we thought maybe she was gaining weight because she finally had a sure meal, three times a day, every day. Four months after we got momma cat (Ginger), she gave birth to 3 beautiful kittens: Chevy, Desi, and Kaya (2 boys, 1 girl). At that point, we realized that momma cat was not fat because she finally had a home!

In any case, we placed Chevy and Kaya in a good home (they both live together) and I kept my sweet Desi. At home we now have Reno (the first one we got), Ginger (momma cat), and my sweet Desi; the biggest cat I have seen, huge paws, huge body, huge heart, he's the sweetest hairy baby I have ever met. He's adorable!

Desi likes to eat, sleep, eat, sleep, eat, sleep, eat, etc. He loves to sleep in our comfortable, desk chair belly up, on the carpet against a wall (also belly up). or right in the middle of my bed (he things he's the king). It's really funny to watch him. He likes to play with his older sibling, Reno. They chase each other and wrestle. He is very curious, he loves jumping on top of the refrigerator to watch everything and everyone around him without being noticed. He also likes to chase flying bugs. Did I mention he loves to eat and sleep?

I love my hairy, fluffy, sweet Desi. In this image, he's asleep in our desk chair belly up. I took the picture from the side of the chair, he looks like a baby.

Char, Coal and Fluid (Black Lab)

In order after a day out in the snow: Char (4 1/2 years), Fluid (11 months) and Coal (20 months). They are labs. Char was bought on March 5, 2005, the others followed after mama found a boyfriend. She had 2 litters, 12 pups each, 9 months apart

They love to play Tug a War and fight and chase each other all over the place. I just love them to death, just wish I could hug them really tight, but they don't like that.

Char has always maintained her nails. The other two, it is a battle. I wish Char would show them how to do them.

In the other picture, Fluid was about 2 weeks old and weighed 4 lbs. I didn't set the scale but you can see how small she is and an Angel on her chest. She is an instigator, a bone snatcher and rough and tough against her older sister Coal and her mama Char. Every time I look at her, I still see me bottle feeding her from birth.

Today's Tips:

Sore Throat Remedy: Gargle With Cola

When a sore throat is beginning to develop, pull out the cola! Just gargle with any type of a cola (Dr. Pepper, Coke, Pepsi, favorite store brands of cola). Gargle and "spit" until the cola return looks like cola with no mucus. Do this as often as necessary! Sounds gross, but it works!

Reuse Plastic Bags from Linens

I save the plastic packages that my sheet sets and comforters come in. They have zippers and I use them to store everything from my sewing supplies, laces, fabric, hair rollers and other comforters after I launder them. They store well and you can see what inside.

Toilet Train Your Cat

For you cat owners out there, please consider toilet training your cat, as opposed to litter training. There's no big mystic around it. It's fairly simple and straight forward.

I personally used the citikitty system (www.citikitty.com), but you can google Toilet training your cat and find a lot of tips and ideas that are FREE for you to use and adjust to your own needs.

Trust me, the time and effort it takes (which is really not all that much) will pay for itself over and over, once you stop needing to buy litter. Trust me!

I've never submitted a tip before but am so pleased with my success and the money I've saved so far, I just had to suggest/submit a tip!

Link: What Book Got You Hooked?

Well, this isn't a Thrifty Tip but would be Thrifty Fun. I vote for the Literacy site for free, among others, daily so those sites will receive donations for their cause . Right now the Literacy site has a question posted: "What Book Got You Hooked?"

Well, for me it was a book I read in the third grade about Madam Curie.

Make a Cushioned Bench for Blanket Storage

This is a home decor and organization tip all in one. If you have lots of blankets taking up space in your linen closet and would like to add a touch of elegance and comfort to your bedroom(s), try this: buy a sturdy coffee table at a yard sale or thrift store whose legs would compliment your decor.

Find a piece of fabric you like, cut it so you have two pieces big enough to cover the top of the coffee table, with several inches hanging over on all sides.

Paint, stain, marbleize, or whatever you would like to do to the table to have it match or compliment the other pieces in the room.

Sew the fabric top and bottoms together, but leave one long side open; on this side seam, sew Velcro or a zipper, or ribbons to be tied ,or other method of closure, thereby making a big "sack".
Now take all the extra blankets, fold them to the dimensions of the table top, and place them in the fabric "sack". Fasten sack shut with bows, Velcro, etc., and place it on the coffee table.

You now have a cushioned bench for the foot of your bed, in front of a window, or anyplace you would like, and your blankets are out of the way until needed.

Use Abreva Cold Sore Treatment For Pimples

One night before going to bed, I took out the lil tub of Abreva that I purchased from Target. I think it cost me something like $14, yes a little price but it really works and well worth every last penny! I dabbed it on the lil tiny bump just as soon as I started to feel the early warning signs that a cold sore is coming, like itching or tingling because that's what the directions suggest. That way the medication in Abreva stops the cold sore from developing into a big ugly mess.

So as I applied a lil dab on and gently rubbed it into my cold sore, I decided to also experiment and apply a dab of it to a pimple that I noticed on my face and thought, "well, it couldn't hurt". When I woke up in the morning, the red inflamed pimple was almost completely gone! I went on the Abreva website to read about there product and discovered that it was FDA approved and read about the causes of cold sores and browsed through the helpful and interesting info.

P.S. if you go to there website, there's a lil tab that says "think savings" I clicked on it and registered so I can qualify for a coupon that I was able to print out right after I completed my registration.

Windex as a Stain Remover

My 18 month old recently managed to take a ballpoint pen to bed with her and draw all over a borrowed white Bubaroo sleeping bag and all over her sheets! I took it to the dry cleaners and they sprayed it with this clear liquid and told me to go straight home and rub in the liquid and wash with NapiSan and laundry liquid.

I did and the stain was gone completely. The pen was all over the bag. It smelled just like Windex although the woman told me it was a 'special' pen remover! I will try Windex in future and would recommend it as I have read many websites suggesting it as a stain remover.

By JillyG from Perth, AUS

Editor's Note: NapiSan is an Australian laundry product, similar to OxiClean.

Dear Webby's Joke of the Day

A robust-looking and very well dressed gentleman ate a fine meal at an expensive restaurant and topped it off with some Napoleon brandy, then he summoned the headwaiter.

"Do you recall," he asked pleasantly, "how a year ago, I ate just such a repast here and then, because I couldn't pay for it, you beat me up and had me thrown into the gutter like a common bum?"

"I'm very sorry sir." began the contrite headwaiter.

"Oh, it's quite all right." said the guest, "but I'm afraid I'll have to trouble you for the same chore again."

Wedding Cocktail Reception on a Tight Budget

I am getting married next year in the summer and I don't want to have a sit down reception. I am planning on having a Cocktail Reception for 250 guests following the ceremony in a church dining hall which will start about 1:30-2:00 pm. My finance and I are on a very tight budget and we are looking for ways to cut cost while having a very nice and elegant cocktail reception serving only appetizers.

Our budget is $500 to $1000 dollars for different types of appetizers (veggie trays, fruit trays, meatballs, cookies, nuts, bacon wraps, punch, accessories to make the food look nice, etc.), you know the types of food served at cocktail receptions. Is this a good dollar amount to feed 250 people in the early afternoon? I welcome ideas of recent receptions held this year or what some brides are doing for next year. I am worried that it will not be enough food to feed 250 people.

Lawn Mower Carburetor Leaks Gas

I have a Craftsman Riding mower LT1000, 42 in. cut, 2007 model. It is leaking gas into the bowl where the carburetor is. The gasket is sealing, it's not leaking out there.

I purchased a new "needle" and it is still leaking. I had asked them to order needle and seat, but they only ordered the needle. Do you think it could be the seat I need now?

Melted Crayon Dried on Clothing

My daughter's kids put jeans in the washer with crayons. She didn't discover it until the jeans had gone through the dryer as well. Polishing Metal: Trash To Treasure
By Kelly Ann Butterbaugh

After scouring flea markets and yard sales, I've found some fabulous treasures. Metals are often unrealized treasures. Tarnished silver and brass look drab and worthless, but there's treasure to be found under there. Avoid the expensive store-bought polishes and create your own. If those fail and the tarnish is here to stay, learn to work around it and see the beauty in your newly found treasures.
