Batch of Cookies from Cake Mix
If you need to make up a batch of cookies in a hurry, take a box of cake mix and add 2 eggs and 1/2 cup of oil. Mix and roll dough into balls and then into powdered sugar or granulated sugar and place on cookie sheet. Flatten cookie dough if preferred. Bake at 350 degrees for 8 - 10 minutes. Remove to wire racks to cool and you will have 2-3 dozen cookies. By Charlotte

This is an old trick but maybe someone hasn't heard about it yet. I save my banana peel after eating the banana and gently dig out an opening around my roses and place the banana peel, spread out with the inside of the peel facing the ground and cover. It adds potassium to the soil. My roses love it! Thank you.

Maybe it's because I'm English but I'm horrified at some of the frugal tips I've read here (most are BRILLIANT!), like "dry washing outside, don't use dryer"I only dry indoors if I desperately need something in a hurry and it's pouring rain outside. Or the recent "Swiffer type" floor cleaner mops, what's wrong with the good ol' floor mop and bucket? If I could get down there, I'd still be washing my floors by hand, much more satisfying and corners and furniture legs get a little wash down while I'm at it. I know many ladies work full-time outside (and inside!) the home, but ~ come on, back to basics please.
Liza, in France, from England.
Editor's Note: Please feel free to leave feedback whenever you think a back to basics approach is more appropriate. All tips and articles are up for discussion and we all learn from one another.

This is a really obvious tip but maybe not everyone has thought of it. When we open a bag of something in the kitchen (e.g. bag of nuts, packet of rice) but don't use all of it immediately, I keep a strip of cardboard with wooden clothes pegs on it in a drawer and we use one of those to close the bag - easy, frugal and they last for years!

Featured Feedback: RE: Gas Saving Tips
Gas - or petrol as it is called here in Australia is also very expensive.
I cannot comment about air con - I don't have it, so I can't compare.
However, in Australia the oil companies have an interesting thing called a "Discount Cycle". This means that although the companies strenuously deny it, the petrol prices move up and down daily according to a cycle.
In Adelaide (where I live) the cycle peaks on the weekend, and the lowest price is usually late Wednesday night or Thursday morning. The prices can vary up to 10 cents per litre. Presently my local station has a high of $AUS1.08.9 (YES - they actually charge you in tenths of a cent!!!) and a low of 98.9 CENTS AUS per litre.
I usually try to make my tank last until Wed pm, otherwise, I will buy $AUS5 worth to get me through and fill up when cheaper.

Hi Heather,
I've also found that it works well to use a tiny amount of cleanser, such as Comet, on those stains. It takes them off immediately and leaves a shining cup.

After a Christmas service at our church a lady was blowing out the candles and she got some on her silk blouse. She has put the blouse away because she doesn't want to throw it away but the wax is where everyone can see it. She has tried ice and stuff but it didn't work. Also I need something that will work on table cloths too. :) Ashley in OH

I send in tips quite frequently and now I am on the other end and am asking for your help. I have in my possession 2 bottles of shrimp cocktail sauce but it will not be used for shrimp nor any other type of seafood. Might any one out there have a suggestion as to how I may use the sauce rather than throw it out? Thanking you in advance for any info you can offer me. joesgirl

When trying to cut expenses, food is a great place to start because there are so many opportunities to save. One way to watch your savings pile up and be able to use it for a goal, such as a vacation, down payment on a home or paying off debt, is to put the cash you saved from any purchase into an envelope or a jar until you get enough to make a bank savings deposit. All About Strawberry Pots
By Monica Resinger
Strawberry pots are the pots that are shaped like an urn and have 'pockets' up and down the sides of the pot. They are made especially for growing strawberries and are easy and convenient. You can also grow herbs, flowers or other plants in them. Plants that have a hanging habit put the pockets of strawberry pots to good use. Strawberries do have a hanging habit and don't mind being cramped because their roots are shallow so are an excellent choice for growing in a strawberry pot.

Bread: bake it or buy it?
By Patty Getz
I often get the question is it really cheaper to make something rather than buy it. One example is bread, when you can buy bread for 50 cents, why make it? There are a lot of reasons, besides cost to make bread. Whether it is worth your time, and is cost effective, is largely an answer that only you can answer.
