Use Coffee Pot For Multiple Uses

Make use of the heat from your coffee maker by sitting a small dish of potpourri or orange peels or some other nice thing on top! I am using mine to warm a jar of spicy mint body butter! When I go for a coffee refill I am reminded by the scent and sight and I automatically moisturize hands or throat or elbows! What a nice little pick-me-up!

Another use for a coffee maker with a timer: Pre make your meal by sitting a small glass dish of soup or other on the warmer and set the timer so it starts warming and is hot before you get home for work!
I would only suggest this be done in homes where it is kept cool enough that there would be no worry about spoilage.

Also this would work best for people are go home for lunch or someone is there to tend to it so the food on the coffee warming plate doesn't have to be left out as long.

Bear Dog (Lab Mix)

Bear Dog is 8 years old. He is a lab and something big! We got him in October of 07. He was adopted from our local shelter, the elderly gentleman that had him before us couldn't take care of him anymore. Amazingly, for being an outside only dog, he is very well behaved and is now an inside dog with no problems. Well, one, he'll steal bread off the counter, but we love him and just put it away out of his reach now.

He likes to sleep, lay in the sun, go for walks. He scratches like a bear, rubbing his back on things like trees and couches, he'll push our couch out of place in a minute!

Automotive Hand Cleaner for Laundry

Laundry tip. All oil based stains can be cleaned by using the waterless hand cleaner you find in the automotive department.

I use it on salad dressing a lot. It is very safe. Any thing that is oil based this works great on. Just rub on the spot and put in the wash as usual.

Links: Almost Free Books

I stumbled onto a link on a website where you can get books for almost free. We have been listing books of ours that we want to get rid off and getting other books we do want. The only real cost is the postage for mailing a book to someone else. I am usually able to mail stuff media mail or first class, whichever is cheapest.

http://www.bookmooch.com

I also did a bit of searching on google where you actually trade books, videos, games, etc. You list items you have and arrange trades with others for stuff they have. Again, the only real cost is the postage.

Temporary Wallpaper for Renters

A great way to decorate a rental that will not harm the wall is with fabric that's held up with old fashioned Liquid Starch. If you can find a fabric you love at a price you can afford, then you can't beat this handy trick! Cotton or a cotton blend works best because it absorbs the liquid starch. It's also important to first wash your fabric before hanging because this not only removes any sizing, but washing also pre-shrinks the fabric so it won't shrink once it's hung and dry. All you need are a few simple tools and a measuring tape to figure out how much fabric to buy. (Cotton fabric is usually 45" wide)

Besides the fabric, you'll need: a bucket or large container, a large sponge, a paint roller or brayer, a gallon of liquid starch, a roller cutter (for cutting the fabric once it's hung) and a chair or step ladder. It's also nice to have a friend help out. All you do is dip your washed fabric into the bucket of liquid starch, then wring it out a bit. Next, hang the fabric starting at the ceiling, then cut the excess off with the roller cutting wheel. When it's time to move, simply pick a corner off with your fingernail, then pull it off in one easy motion. Then simply run the fabric through the wash and rinse cycle a few times and stash it away for another project or for hanging up again in your new place. This decorating technique is especially nice for those of us who keep changing our minds, or who get tired of things quickly.

Record Player Art

This is a good way to recycle an old record player. It is much like the old spin art toys sold in department stores years ago.

Use a pencil or sharp object to poke a hole in the center of a paper plate. Place the plate on the record player, using the hole to position it on the post of the record player. Turn on the record player, and place the tip of a colored marker, crayon, colored pencil, or brush that has been dipped in paint on the plate allowing the plate to spin underneath. You can vary the pressure, use multiple colors, and change the position to make a more unique and interesting design.

A Resting Place for Kids on a Camping Trip

This tip is for campers with children. Children seem to love to have their little clubhouses and tents. What's really nice is if you have a small extra tent you can put up on your site. If you have a child who needs some time to be alone or if they get bored, they can always go into the tent to play, color, read, whatever they need to do. This gives them some quiet time.

If you have no tent, you can always bring extra blankets and make one out of the picnic table. Leave the blankets half way down on the sides for air to get in and also so you can keep a eye on them. I noticed after a busy day, kids need some space and down time and also time away from adults and a place for them to do that. This gives them something to do and a lot of times they would fall asleep just by going in to rest. But it really does help them as well as you.

Children's Shoe Sizes for School Shoes

Keep a tracing of your children's feet in your handbag and search out the most economical (quality inclusive) store for your children's new school shoes. The store will usually hold them for you for 24 hrs, so this gives you a child free search before deciding what shoes to show them for "their" selection. What they don't see, won't hurt them. Mother of 4 + 1 (and past school shoe trauma's).

Source: Credit = frustration and minimal budget V children whining and getting what you can't afford (at a lower quality than may have been available).

Furnace Filter Tips

Save on heating/cooling costs by maintaining your air filter. A heating system repairman told me to use the cheapest, blue filter, and to change it at least monthly or when soiled. He told me this would let the air conditioning motor work much more easily, saving electricity and extending the life of the air conditioner.

If you have a 14x20 inch opening, you can buy a 30x20 inch filter and make 2 from them. Get the wire-supported corrugated white filter. Cut the supporting cardboard at 15 inches. Cut the filter to size, and fold the cardboard supports back 1 inch to support the filter. Make sure the edge meets the opening. Now you have 2 filters.

More Absorbent Towels

I was surprised by the absorbency of the towels at the salon I go to, and did a little investigating. The staff does not use any softener in the washer, and NO dryer sheets, yet the towels are soft and so absorbent. They have a water softener. But I had to do some experimenting, because I wasn't happy with my towels, and I learned something. I washed a bunch of towels in just about 1 tablespoon of Oxy powder (my favorite) and then only 1/2 the amount of liquid softener that I usually use (even in hard well water). Then dried them without a softener sheet. TA DA! Soft AND really absorbent towels! And I save money.

Feed Your Pet in the Carrier

To acclimate your cat or dog to its carrier and so they'll have something good associated with it, feed them in their carrier. That way, it will not only be easier to take them to the vet, but if there's ever an emergency, it won't be hard to get them in it. Also, if you make the same sound each time you feed them, and you need them to come in an emergency, you can make that "time for food" sound and they'll come running!

Dear Webby's Joke of the Day

At the candy store Judi had about 20 bags of candy. A smart-alek behind her in line told her:

"You should push the air out of them. The candies might cost less if they don't have the weight of the air in them."

So for a few minutes she let the air out of the bags. After she did that he told her it didn't really matter. It would have weighed the same.'

Judi was more confused than ever and said, "If having air in the bag doesn't weigh any more, then why does it make the bags look so fat?"

Dealing With Lady Beetles

I am having a major issue with lady beetles in my very old house. These bugs were released to battle another pest and now they have become a pest! Lady beetles look like ladybugs but are a dark orange. Right now there are about 50 in an upstairs window. Short of spraying a poison or calling an exterminator, I'd appreciate ANY suggestions.

17 Year Old Birthday Party Ideas

I'm turning 17 in a couple of weeks and I have no clue what to do with friends. My parents are taking me to Disney World (don't live in FL though), so I'm not going to do a big party. I'm not sure whether I want to do co-ed or just girls. I'd like to do something a little more special than just going out to eat. But at the same time, I'm not looking for something big or with a lot of planning. Any thoughts? Thanks so much!

Aggressive German Shepherd Behavior

I have a 4 year old male German shepherd, we got him when he was 13 weeks old when my husband came back from Iraq. We moved a lot with him he had to get use to many different places. When we moved to Oklahoma he was 3 years old, and thats when the problem with him started. He got very aggressive toward everyone, he bit my daughter when she was trying to grab his collar to let him out, and I know she is afraid of him a little.

Well we just found out that we have to move again due the military to Germany, and I really want to take the dog with me. All the dog trainers I have been to have turned me away, so last week I went with him to a K9 training center. As soon as we got out of the car he wanted to attack the K9 officer. The officer told me to hold up the leash and that's when my German shepherd attacked me. He bit me in my shoulder and arm, I was in shock and at that moment afraid of my own dog. The officer said there will be no hope for him, that the best thing would be to put him down.

I really don't want to do that because I love him so much even though I'm afraid of him now. If anyone could give me some advise on what to do, and if anyone knows of a rescue that takes aggressive German shepherds I would really be thankful.

Monika from Fort Sill, Oklahoma

Update: I found a home for my German Shepherd. The K9 academy took him, the officer said he can be saved and he has high hopes for him. I am very happy.

Cleaning Fabric Softener Dispenser

I just discovered that you are supposed to clean out that fabric softener dispenser in your washing machine and when I pulled out the cup, which was coated in blue thick gunk, underneath it was a nasty black, thick junk. I purchased the washing machine used a few years ago, so who knows how old this junk is!

What is it? Is it mold and mildew? I am freaking out about it! I cleaned the dispenser out and then the middle came out so I cleaned it out as well, but I am haunted by what the heck all that waxy black stuff was, so I need to know if it is just softener build up with dirt or mold? HELP!
