Vol. 7, Num. 123, June 24, 2008 (Read It Online)

Below are the contest winners for last week. It as very tough to pick winners. We have been receiving an abundance of wonderful tips. This week we are going to try something new and give a little insight into what we (the editor's at ThriftyFun) liked about the tips that were chosen.

Photo Contest Winner

Set Plants Together Before You Buy
By Misty from Wooster, OH

Taking a little time in the nursery to find complementary plants is a wonderful idea. You also can pick the brains of people working and nursery and make sure the plants will thrive well next to one another.

Take Your Forgotten Coupons to Customer Service
By Diana from Prospect, KY

Most stores do allow you to get a Sale price or use a coupon on something you have already purchased if you come back to the within a reasonable amount of time. It's good customer service by the store and can save you a lot of money, especially on big purchases. If you are unsure of whether a store will honor a coupon after the point of sale, give them a call before heading out to the store or find out what their grace period is and handle the affair the next time you go to the store. Combine trips and save on gas!

It's Summer, Time To Get Into Shape
By Lisa from Halifax, NS

This was a great list of timely tips on a subject that we hear a lot about this time year when people are trying to fit into their bathing suits. One thing I would add to these tips is that you should avoid any gyms that require you to sign an extended contract and if you find yourself not using the gym, don't feel bad about canceling the membership. Just move on and find another outlet to accomplish your fitness goals.

Recipe Contest Winner

Rice Cooker Sausage Jambalaya
By Connie from Cotter, AR

What we love about this recipe was re-purposing the rice cooker. It also sounds yummy.

Spike (Chihuahua/Rat Terrier?)

This is Spike. He is 1 1/2 years old now but 2 months in this picture. He is a Chihuahua and maybe Rat Terrier. I got him for Valentine's Day because my first Chihuahua, who is a female, fell in love with my husband and he joking said maybe I needed a male Chihuahua to love on me.

He chases a rubber ball but he doesn't like to give it up, he just likes to tease you with it and squeak it in your ear when you're not paying him enough attention. We tell him to love on Meche (our female) and he nibbles and licks all over her ear and head even though she is much older than him and not very tolerant of him, possibly because he is not pure Chihuahua and so much bigger than her. He weighs 10 lbs and she weighs 4 lbs.

Garden: Canadian Explorer Climbing Rose

As you can see, I live in Iowa and our winters can be fierce. If you want to grow a climbing rose for anyone in zone 5 or less, your best bet is the Canadian Explorer Roses. This rose is three years old and as you can see it has covered my split rail fence. They do not need any special protection although I do mulch around mine as a precaution.

"Hot Spot" Collar For Dogs

Our dog, Joshua, develops "hot spots" in the heat of summer, and constantly chews his back and his bobtail until it is raw and the hair is gone. I have tried all kinds of ointments with no success. So I have devised a collar that I can slip over his head to prevent him from being able to reach those spots to chew. I measured the distance from the back of his ear to his shoulder. (5 inches) Then I measured around his neck. I added a little to this measurement so that the collar would not be too tight.

Using these measurements, I cut 6 layers of muslin, then cut 2 layers from a manila file folder about 1/2 an inch smaller all around. I laid down 3 layers of the muslin, then the 2 layers of cardboard to make it rigid, and then the other 3 layers of the muslin. I sewed around all 4 sides close to the edge, then sewed seams lengthwise about an inch apart to keep the layers from shifting. I took large safety pins and pinned this around his neck.

It is not tight. I can slip it off his head to bathe him, but he cannot get it off. He wasn't real happy with his new collar, but it has prevented him from reaching back and biting those places on his rear and they are healing. The photo shows pretty clearly what I have just described.

Contests:

These contests are weekly. We pick 2 tip winners and 1 photo winner at the end of each week. Each winner will win $25!

Today's Tips:

Use 3 Ring Binder for Organizing Statements

After years of struggling to keep all of my monthly statements and bills in a filing box, I decided to think about what would work better for me. The problem I have is every time I open the filing box, my bills, statements and receipts are hard to find. I have to take the entire content of say, "Medical" out in order to review things or to find a certain bill etc...

I finally found a large 3-ring notebook and purchased a set of dividers with pockets. Each pocket I used scrapbooking letters to label them, Dental, Medical, checking account... and so on. I spent a few dollars and bought a paper hole cutter. Each time a statement or letter comes in, I cut the holes and insert it with the proper divider. The envelopes are great for receipts and canceled checks.

Now when I need to find something quick, I grab my 2008 filing notebook and flip through easily to what I need. It is so much more neat and organized! I love the way everything is easier to view! The cost is minimal and the notebook can store at the end of the year without taking up as much room.

Reusing Baby Wipe Containers

Reuse Baby Wipe containers to store your dryer sheets. I have found this to be better than anything else I have tried. They won't pop up unless they are made together and perforated, but the container still works great.

Another use for Baby Wipe containers is storing Kleenex, Scotties, Puffs, etc. in your car. Most tissues pop up so the container is convenient and won't get smushed like the box the tissues come in.

Use Anti-Seize Lubricant on Lug Nuts

When changing a tire, put a small amount of Anti-seize lubricant on each wheel stud. The next time you have to change the tire, it will be much less difficult to loosen the lug nuts. Anti-seize lubricant is available at auto part stores.

Use Microwave to Help Remove RX Labels

After many times of trying to remove labels from empty pill bottles to remove my identity from them before discarding them, I hit on a new way tonight. I was standing at my kitchen sink, next to the microwave. I filled my empty pill bottle with water, sat it in the microwave, heated the water in the micro for a few seconds or minutes. I removed the bottle from the microwave, dumped the water out and just like that the label peeled right off that bottle. No more struggling with labels for me.

Store CD's and DVD's on a Spindle

Thrifty space saving tip for campers who don't want to give up their music and movie collections.

We just recently moved from our house to become full time campers. Moving from a 2400 sq. ft home to a 256 sq. ft home requires some strategy and sacrifice. I am a HUGE music lover. Over the years my husband and I have collected around 200 music CD's. That takes up a lot of space that we didn't really have for "just" music. But it pained me to think I'd have to give them up. Since we learned about analog TV becoming extinct (and because we decided we did not want to buy that special box), we decided to "beef up" our DVD movie collection (including getting our VCR movies on DVD). But 200 DVD's take up a lot of space and it pained me to give up all those movies.

In the end I came up with an idea that allowed me to keep all my music and movies and have it take up very little space in our camper. Using our local Freecycle group (look it up on yahoo groups), many people were willing to pass along to us CD spindles that almost everyone throws away. These are the spindle cases that blank CDs are packaged in when you buy them in bulk of 25 or more (typically). In the end, we were able to put 100 CDs or DVDs in one (100 size) case and it took up the space of 10 inches high and the diameter of just more than 1 DVD/CD. We keep the CDs up by the driver's seat and the movies back in the bedroom.

This is also an ideal suggestion for those soon going to college and wanting to take more DVDs and CDs than their dorm space would normally allow.

Link: Get The Best Electrical Rate In Texas

Here in the Dallas, TX, area we have http://www.powertochoose.org/ (The Official Electric Choice Web site of the Public Utility Commission of Texas). You input your zip code and it shows a list of electricity providers for your area and their rates. There are a lot more providers than you might imagine, all using the exact same electric delivery company.

You need to read the fine print because the rate they show might be an introductory rate which ceases after a few months. Also notice the cancellation info.

Anyway, what I wanted to say was that we'd received a solicitation in the mail about switching to a power company with a $70 something bonus and a guaranteed rate for 2 years. By the time I got around to investigating the price list, the offer was rescinded. But I signed up anyway for the posted rate, because it was still a savings. Then, in the mail a month later, I received a repeat of the bonus offer. I called them on the phone, asked for the bonus, and the clerk had the intelligence to make sure that the rate I was already receiving was even better than the one offered with the bonus. Buyer beware!

Take Your Plastic Bags Back to the Store

Recycling is very important to me, sometimes to the dismay of my husband, who complains about clutter. The plastic grocery bags accumulate, even though I mostly use cloth bags. The plastic ones still find their way into my home.

To keep them organized I simply stuff them into empty tissue boxes. If one gets full, another one will neatly stack on top of it. It's very easy to pull one out of the slot intended for dispensing tissues, and I conveniently get one at a time.

I toss a full box into the car so I am armed with plenty of bags when I go to the farm stand or grocery store. Some stores even give a bit of credit off your bill per bag reused.

*TIP* Be careful your tissue box doesn't accidentally get scanned or you'll end up paying for a box of tissues you didn't purchase! Use a separate box for other, larger bags, like those from Sears, Penney, Walmart, etc. They can be reused too!

Dear Webby's Joke of the Day

Definition of Outdoor Barbecuing

It's the only type of cooking a "real" man will do. When a man volunteers to do such cooking, the following chain of events is put into motion.

(1) The woman goes to the store.

(2) The woman fixes the salad, vegetables, and dessert.

(3) The woman prepares the meat for cooking, places it on a tray along with the necessary cooking utensils, and takes it to the man, who is lounging beside the grill, drinking a beer.

(4) The man places the meat on the grill.

(5) The woman goes inside to set the table and check the vegetables.

(6) The woman comes out to tell the man that the meat is burning.

(7) The man takes the meat off the grill and hands it to the woman.

(8) The woman prepares the plates and brings them to the table.

(9) After eating, the woman clears the table and does the dishes.

(10) The man asks the woman how she enjoyed "her night off." And, upon seeing her annoyed reaction, concludes that there's just no pleasing some women.
