Bearded Iris (Rare Treat)

This Bearded Iris is called RARE TREAT.

By Great Granny Vi

Bearded iris, Iris germanica, is a hardy, long-lived perennial that require a minimum of maintenance. The flowers have six petals; three upright petals (called standards) and three hanging petals (called falls). A fuzzy line or beard runs down the middle of each fall. Flowers come in many colors including blue, pink, purple, reddish, white, yellow, and bi-colors. Most bearded iris flower in the spring (April to June depending on cultivar), but some of the new cultivars re-flower in the summer and fall. The second flower display is not as showy as the spring display but last into the fall. Many re-blooming iris are fragrant... Source: North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service

Quick and Meaningful Gift

For a quick and meaningful gift for anyone, write an acrostic poem. Simply write the person's name down the left side of a sheet of paper, one letter at a time. For each letter, choose a word or words that describe the person. For example,

Ingredients:

  • Marvelous cook
  • Angelic face
  • Radiant smile
  • Youthful outlook

Directions:

(Or you can get fancier and write a rhyming poem!)

Print out the acrostic on your computer printer. Make each beginning letter in a larger, bolder font, and add appropriate artwork if you want. Frame in a dollar store frame, and you have an easy and inexpensive gift.

Credit Card Information on Your Computer

We know a couple that pay off their credit card each month. A few years ago, they went to purchase new patio furniture and the clerk told them they needed to pay with another form of payment as their credit card was maxed out. Knowing this couldn't or shouldn't be so, they rushed home to call their credit card company.

Yes, it was so! Purchases were tickets for the Orient Express, clothing stores, and music stores! Come to find out, their computer went on the blink and they had to have it repaired. The fellow they took their computer to for repairs had stole all of her online banking info.

After clearing all this up, the credit card company didn't make them repay all that money--LUCKILY. I don't know what happened to the computer repair man. I hope they prosecuted him.

Fixing Stuck Numbers On Your Phone

If you ever have a numbers on the handset of a telephone that you cannot push any longer, try this: Take the phone apart. My handset was in three layers. Wipe with damp cloth and q-tips. Mine had a few dog hairs in it. Reassemble and see if that corrects your problem. I was told by the manufacturer that the phone was no good if you had this problem. I sat the phone to the side and several months later decided to try and clean it and it worked!

Natural Fiber - Kiwi As A Laxative

Scotchguard For Clothes

I worked with a young teacher who wore Kahki pants a lot and they always seemed so spot free and clean. One day I got the courage to ask her secret. She said that when she bought new clothes she sprayed them with scotchguard before wearing or washing them . She would occasionally refresh the scotchguard after washing. Just passing along someone elses cleaning tip. I read the article about the canvas shoes and it made me think of it.

Quick Microwave Iced Tea

Measure 6 cups of water into a pitcher or other container and add an appropriate amount of sugar or artificial sweetener for 1/2 gallon of iced tea. Then, place 8 tea bags in 2 cups of hot water and microwave on high for 4 minutes. When finished, strain this mix into the pitcher containing the 6 cups of water, discard the tea bags, and stir. Chill and serve. I've never had cloudy iced tea with this method.

Healthier Iced Tea

I like the health benefits of green tea, but I'm not too hip on the taste of it. To remedy this, when I make a half gallon of iced tea, I use 4 green tea bags and 4 regular (black) tea bags, instead of all regular tea bags. There's just enough regular tea to balance out with taste of the green tea. Plus, I now get the antioxidant benefits of both kinds of tea!

By truerblue

Post Feedback: Click Here

Inexpensive Flavored Ice Teas

I like the taste of flavored teas, but making iced tea with them can get expensive if you drink a lot of it like I do. My solution is to use anywhere from 1 to 4 flavored tea bags and 4 regular tea bags mixed together when making a half gallon of iced tea. I usually use 4 flavored and 4 regular bags, so I get a hint of the flavor in the tea, without it being overpowering. Makes a 20-tea bag box last a long time. You can mix flavored herbal tea and black tea, green tea with herbal tea, white tea and black tea, red tea and black tea, etc. The possibilities are endless, and you can experiment to come up with some great flavor combinations!

Cleaning With Micro Fiber Cloth

Reduce the amount of cleaning agent 5 - 10 times.

Don't be shy of water. Get what you want to clean quite wet. Wring out the micro fiber cloth as dry as you can. Scrub as light or as hard as you want. Rinse and wring out the cloth often. It works best when it is just damp and there is lots of water in and on the area to be cleaned.

A one square foot cloth will absorb a cup of water, but works best when it is just damp.

Spaghetti sauce comes off a white carpet with just light scrubbing, but will leave a spot that is whiter than the rest of the carpet.

With paints and inks, always clean them off clothes before they go into the wash.

It's amazing stuff, but you have to treat it different from regular cleaning cloths:

Reduce the cleaning agent or use plain water. Don't wash them with laundry that requires fabric softener. NEVER throw them into a dryer.

Have FUN!

Never Fail Happy Life "Starter"

Ingredients:

Patience, humility, understanding, loyalty, commitment, cooperation, kindness, passion, sense of humor, laughter, sensitivity, joy, compassion, generosity, fun, compromise, honesty, faith, trust, forgiveness, smiles, love, hugs and kisses

Directions:

Mix lots of patience with large amounts of understanding and commitment. Blend in a tremendous amount of kindness and great big sense of humor. Gently fold in sensitivity and compassion. Add a huge handful of fun, but don't forget to mix in honesty and trust. Stir in many smiles, lots of hugs and kisses, and just a pinch of humility. Throw in a generous amount of loyalty for good measure. Add 1 heaping cup each of cooperation and passion. Add laughter and joy and a giant cup of generosity. Last, but not least, ample compromise is a must in this recipe, as well as faith and forgiveness. When all is blended and smooth, slowly add a bucket of love, making sure it coats all ingredients. This is your Happy Life Stater. Stir it daily and add to it often. Don't forget to feed and don't take any shortcuts... Shortcuts in cooking usually result in disaster... If you carefully follow instructions, the finished recipe will double in size if kept in a warm environment and it will never lose it's potency. Give a cup to friends and family so that they will enjoy a happy life too.

Saving Money on Trash Bags

Ideas for saving money on trash bags. Post your ideas below.

This may sound gross or something but, there are alot of people that just dont have alot of money. and every penny counts.I have found that instead of useing trash bags just use your trash can. You really dont need to buy trash bags, They have to pick up the trash no matter if it is in trash bags or trash cans. You can also use your grocery store bags and cans or jars or whatnot for the messy stuff.

Hartz Tooth Scrubber Gets Dog Teeth Clean

We thought our dog's teeth would need to be cleaned by the vet -- an expensive proposition! But, as luck had it, we bought him a Hartz Tooth Scrubber for Christmas, and it has eliminated almost all of the tartar. It's an oblong shaped chew toy, with tightly spaced wheels containing tiny rubber teeth. As he chews, the wheels turn and "scrub" his teeth and gums. He loves chewing it, and for about $4, it saved us a lot of money.

CD Rom Disc Crafts

My parents were getting all kinds of CDs in the mail like AOL, Earthlink, etc. so my mom decided she would decorate them with pictures cut from greeting cards, magazines, etc.; glitter; different types of ribbons; etc. She would also have themes like 4th of July, Santa Claus, Thanksgiving.

Depending on your imagination you can decorate the recorded side and completely cover the inked side with felt, velvet or something else; or decorate the inked side and leave the recorded side alone and it makes a neat hanging picture or as mentioned before add clock hands which makes a unique clock. Also great for Christmas tree ornaments (minus the clock since then it would be too heavy). If you can paint you can try painting on them as well.

Plan Ahead When Thawing Meat

It's easy to thaw meat in the microwave, but it's just as easy to place it on a refrigerator shelf overnight. It thaws by dinner time the next day, and I don't have to use any electricity to do it. A little planning ahead is all it takes.

By zballoongirl

Editor's Note: I have never been happy with how my microwave thaws meat. It always seems to thaw it unevenly, so I agree with this tip wholeheartedly.

Baby Jar Chandelier

I love adorable baby jars. i can't throw them away. I am in the process of making a chandelier out of them. Just buy one of those cheap wreaths made out of intwined wood branches that every craft store seems to have an abundance of. Wrap wire around the neck of the jars so its upright and hang from the wreath. Use as few, or as many as you like, even or uneven. Hang the wreath from the ceiling with wire, screw on a hook, stick tea lights in the jars and there you go! You can decorate the jars however you wish, string beads on the wires, it's all up to your decor.

Straining Tea Joke

Little Billy was left to fix lunch. When his mother returned with a friend, she noticed that Billy had already strained the tea.

"Did you find the tea strainer?" His mother asked.

"No mother, I couldn't find it, so I used the fly swatter."

His mother nearly fainted, so he hastily added, "Don't get so excited Mother, I used an old one."

Homemade Bridesmaid Dresses

I made 4 dresses for my son's wedding for around $20 apiece. Walmart sells a CHEAP pattern and it was a very simple, strapless A line. I hadn't sewn in years but it worked out fine. The secret to making bridesmaid dresses is not to be extravagant about the material you choose. Shoes were from Payless. The cost for each girl about $35.

Don't make the cost of the dresses keep friends from being able to have a part in your wedding. After all, the dresses (LIKE MINE) hang in the closet never to be used again. Incidently the $35 was the cost of BOTH the dress and shoes.

Instruction For Making a Shoe Racks

I would like the instructions for a shoe rack I seen a while back that basically consists of 2 long pieces of wood (one i think was a wooden dowel). It mounted directly onto your wall in long rows. I think the dowel was on the top allowing your heel to catch on it while a flat piece of wood approx. 3-4 inches wide was mounted below the dowel for your shoe to rest on?

I would appreciate any info, photos would be great as well. With all the shoes I have it could be a honeymoon saver.

Litter Box Problems With a Grown Cat

I have a male neutered cat that is 4 years old and given to me over a year ago. He had no vaccinations when we got him and he had diarreah. We had him on stomach medicine for 10 days and then got his shots.

He's a VERY sweet loving gentle fat cat! But he gets spells of diarreah that seem to clear up in time whether he has medicine or not, and now he is throwing up every day, usually just once. It's always right after he eats and no hairball subtsance is coming up. The food and water are out all day, but he chooses to eat once, sometimes twice a day and usually only drinks water once a day.

The biggest problem is that he would go poop outside the litterbox when he had diarreah. It was a huge mess and so I finally put down an old tablecloth and he pooped on that. He finally ventured off of that and started pooping all over the room where the litterbox was. Well, that room got stinky real quick. So I moved the box to my bathroom (tile floor).

He goes in the box almost all of the time now, but he kept going back to the old room and pooping on the floor. I sprinkled with cayenne pepper to deter him. He didn't care. I finally had to just keep the door shut. Every once in a while, I will leave the door open for the day and he will always go in there and poop again.

Now, he has decided he will urinate on my bathroom rug! So now I fold the rug and lay it on top of the box. Yesterday, he came into the playroom and urinated on that carpet. I simply do not understand! I have used all kinds of litter to see if he had a preference. I cannot afford to keep running to the vet every time he has a spell. He is declawed, so I cannot put him outside. How can I get a grown cat to continuously us the litter box?

Keeping Homemade Laundry Detergent Liquid

I've used a recipe for making homemade laundry detergent, it contains borax, washing soda, grated soap, glycerine, and water. I have used the same recipe in the past, but didn't add the glycerin and water and just used it as dry powdered detergent. However, now that I've put it in a container, it seems to have formed a solid soap layer at the top of the jug!

Do any of you make liquid laundry detergent? If so, how do you keep it LIQUID? And do you have any tips on how to save this batch?

Recipe For Deep Fried Pickles

Last year, while on vacation, we visited Stone Mountain, GA. We really enjoyed our trip, and one thing that we really enjoyed was "Deep Fried Pickles" that were served in one of the restaurants. They were really delicious - we asked for the recipe, but we were told that the recipe was a secret. The pickles were a deli type sliced spear, coated with some type of breading and then deep fried. It doesn't sound good, but they were to die for!

Does anyone have a recipe for these pickels?

Gray Spots On Tub

Our bathtub is an older, porcelain style tub. We have very hard water in our town and we do not have a softener. Now the tub has developed some gray looking spots on the bottom and I have no idea how to get rid of them.

I have used everything from bleach to CLR (calcium lime rust) cleaner advertised by Paul Harvey. The CLR may have made just a slight difference, but only after I let it sit for a while and it wasn't nearly enough of a difference.

Does anyone know of anything that REALLY works on spots like that? I am thinking they are just soap scum and hard water deposits, but I guess I'm not really sure. Any suggestions?
