Christmas Fabrics for Curtains

After Christmas sales are a great time to buy festive winter fabrics to make simple square curtains. Use fabric glue, fold the edges over. Fold the top edge over again leaving room for a bamboo pole or twigs to thread through to hang curtains. I just hung the pole on top of the old curtain rod.

Peaches and Pineapple (Manx Cats)

Peaches and Pineapple are siblings that I rescued from an old dilapidated plant nursery that was for sale. They were only 7 weeks old at the time and have never been apart from each other. They are Manx cats and have no tails.

I trained them not to get on furniture, counter tops, etc. They are allowed only on one bed in the house and only the couch in the family room. They are trained to go to the potty outside. When they have to go potty, they scratch on the screen door to get out and they have little 12 foot ropes that I attach to their collars so they can go in the yard 12 feet in any direction. When they want back in the house they scratch on the door and I let them in. I have a litter box in the 4th bedroom for emergencies but they seldom use it.

When I say "sit" they both immediately sit down and stay until I say "good girls!" At night I say "get in the bed" and they both lay down in the place of their choosing on the screened patio. They chase each other through the house and are hilarious to watch.

Craft Project: Jingle Spoons

This is an easy craft for a musical instrument, using items you probably already have at home. Crafts like these are an easy way to occupy your kids when it's too cold to play outside.

Approximate Time: 30 minutes

Supplies:

  • 2 plastic spoons
  • 4 inch (approx.) length of ribbon or string
  • jingle bell
  • 2, 12 inch pipe cleaners
  • craft glue

Instructions:

Slide bell onto center of ribbon or string, then tie the ribbon/string to make a knot over the top of the bell to hold it in place. Set this aside for now.

Lay one spoon on table, bowl side up, and put glue down the handle. Now, lay the ribbon/string ends into the glue, and place more glue over the ribbon/string. The bell will sit in the bowl of the spoon.

Place the second spoon, bowl side down this time, over the first to glue the handles of both spoons together. You can hold the handles together with clothespins until the glue dries, at least enough so the glue isn't slippery any longer. Some craft glues dry very quickly.

Place a little glue over the outside of the handles and wrap the handles with pipe cleaners. It should take two.

To play your instrument, just hold it by the handle and shake

Use Unusual Containers for Shelving

I found this cool idea on an old Sunset Magazine Website. Or perhaps it is new, but I just saw it recently. These folks made a mud room in their remodeled house in AK, and put up old fish steamer baskets for shelves! I have done this with wicker baskets, tins, wooden Coke Delivery boxes, and such. But this was really nice and you can even hang things like coats from hooks on the handles!!

One time, I found a rusty 6 cup muffin tin, and spray painted the inside. Then, I put round photos in with some twigs, leaves and such for a nice, rustic shadow box type photo display.

Enjoy!

Use Spinach Water for Stain Removal

Use spinach water for removing sweat stains and ring around the collar. Try blanching fresh spinach. Reserve the water for stain removal.

It doesn't matter if the water is hot or cool. The green water has some type of iron element in which works on the stains. I guess it is the same iron oxide used in antiperspirants.

Swab it on with a toothbrush. It sometimes take out the stains that nothing else would. It is safe for almost any kind of fabric.

Product Review: No Nonsense "Ahh, Said the Foot" Socks

Product: No Nonsense "Ahh, Said the Foot" Socks

Model: 0-70011-14286-0

Manufacturer: No Nonsense

Cost: $4.49 + tax

I've been looking for some soft, cushiony socks, in black anklets. I finally found some in this brand. For my foot size, I had to choose the men's socks (same make and color). I found this brand of sock to be just what I've been looking for. I'm sure they can be purchased at most stores, but I got mine at Walgreen's. I highly recommend them for anyone wanting or needing a thick, cushiony soled sock.

Use Vinegar to Kill Weeds in Sidewalk Cracks

This is sort of a garden tip. When doing your yard, mowing, weeding, etc. you find you have grass/weeds growing in the sidewalk. It is such a pain to crawl along or bend over pulling them up with TOXIC chemicals. Fill a sprayer with vinegar and go at it.

A couple days after spraying, they will be dead! Just sweep them away! I find this works if I am spot spraying area of weeds in the yard. I do not like chemicals and straight vinegar helps with so many yard spots. Rinse your bottle out after use.

Recycle a Spiral Christmas Tree as a Trellis

At Christmas one year, I bought one of those lighted spiral decoration trees. After a few years, it just didn't work. I was looking for a trellis for some plants, and guess what I used? The spiral frame made the flowering vine that grew up it, look like a tree in my yard. Everyone would ask what kind of tree it was.

Bargain Plants at Garden Centers

Have a green thumb and a tight budget? I have found that if I go to garden centers in the big box home improvement stores on the day after their vendors go through the plants, I can find some real bargains. I have bought some puny plants that were in planters which cost more than the plant was reduced to!

Generally all the plants need is a little water and some TLC. I bring them home, put them in a shady spot, and keep them well-watered for several days before planting them out.

The stores usually have them on rolling carts toward the back of the garden section. If you don't see them, ask someone. The folks in the garden center are happy to show you to help get them out of there.

Don't be afraid to ask if they will reduce something that is less than vibrant. A little clipping, plant fertilizer and watering can revive most annuals which are droopy. I have been doing this for several years and have lost very few plants. At the price I got them for, that didn't amount to much money.

Gardening on a Budget

I think that the easiest way to garden on a budget is to first have patience.

Second, gain a collection of plants that are simple propagators; for example Sedum. You can break a piece of this off of the mother plant and just plunge it into the ground and it will stay green and thrive, and the following year will bring you a hardy new plant with multiple stalks to fill out more and more with each year.

I also like to buy hardy plants that can be safely split, like day-lilies already bloomed (these often get discounted after the flowers are gone so if you don't mind guessing the color) Take it home and slice it in half and plant it you will have two fuller plants the following year, and it may re-bloom late summer.

Forsythia will bud roots in water in a few weeks so take your neighbors clippings that they have to take off and sprout the roots and replant! Also if you take clippings in the house in winter you will force bloom them and they will be that beautiful spring yellow early. It brightens the wintry day.

Rose of Sharon produces tons of offshoots. Ask others for some and they will grow like crazy up to 6 feet in poor soil.

You can buy one marigold flower plant and as the heads die and dry pull them off, roll it in your hands these are the seeds and they are very hardy, spread them where you need low lying flowers they will sprout the same year and probably next year too, and since its seeds the color may be different and unpredictable, and dead heading the plant will help more flower heads to come.

If you have the patience, seed saving can be very fun. Seeing something come up that you dropped seeds for is amazingly gratifying. You could find info about where to find the seeds of a plant by googling "where are the seeds on (flower name)" some may not have viable seeds but if they do not, then you could propagate by clippings or by root cuttings.

Last but never least are bulbs; they are beautiful, they are typically cheap, you get multiple bulbs that will create multiple plants for a small price. There are bulbs for each season so you can plan out something new coming up all year long. If you wait until just before the season for planting (Spring and Fall) you can get these at a discount at the home stores. As long as they are not so dry they break in your hand, they are still good. They should also not have an odor, take these home and get them in the ground immediately and next year you will have new colorful flowers. Don't forget to look for the word perennial here so you do not have to buy every year.

Basically you can save a lot of money by asking for clippings, buds, or seeds from friends and family or by purchasing one plant and having some patience if possible.

Use Sandbox Sand in the Garden

In the fall when we put things away, it was always "What do we do with the sand from the sandbox?" Well, I assess what areas of my veggie and flower garden soil needs some soil treatment and divide out the sand box to the garden needing it most. Eliminates the spring work of finding sand to use, as well as putting the sand box away. Many veggies grow better in sandier soil. Some flowers need better drainage.

By doing this in the fall, I can plan my garden seeds and planting on paper during the winter. One draw back to this is if you have an uncovered sandbox where cats might have pooped. You don't want that sand in your veggie garden. Flower garden is o.k.

Tips for Perfect Hard Boiled Eggs

After years of trying to make perfect boiled eggs for Deviled Eggs, and ending up with chunks out of them, I have finally found the answers. Begin by placing your eggs in a single layer in a pan and covering with cold water. Add a wooden toothpick (believe it or not, this will keep the egg shells from cracking while they are cooking). Bring the water to a rolling boil. Boil for one minute, cover and remove from the heat. Allow to cool.

Now for the hard part; peeling them without tearing them. Place a coffee filter in your sink to cover the drain. Turn on the cold water faucet with a slow stream of water. Strike the shell on the counter to crack, then gently press the shell until it is all cracked.

Start at the large end of the egg, and while holding it under the stream of water, start slowly peeling the shell away. Let the shells fall into the coffee filter. The water will drain away, and when the job is finished, gather the filter and egg shells and drop into the trash, Or better yet, add it to your garden compost.

To cut the eggs smoothly into halves, dip your knife in cold water first, To dress up those "Pretty" deviled eggs, sprinkle with Paprika.

Little by Little Vegetable Soup

Before microwaves became so available, I started the habit of putting small amounts of leftover vegetables in the freezer, in a large plastic container with a snug fitting lid. It was amazing how quickly the container filled with leftovers which weren't enough to serve my family, and to see visually how much would have been wasted.

When the container is full, thaw it in the fridge. Cook some chicken, beef, ground beef, or no meat, and add whatever seasonings you like. I like the onion soup packets, tomato sauce, whatever canned cream soup sounds sounds good that day, rosemary, chopped onions (I even freeze leftover onions for this purpose, wrapped separately and securely.), or whatever seasonings you prefer. Nutritious, delicious, filling, and FRUGAL!

Source: Necessity is the source for this tip. We were raising two growing boys on one income, so being frugal was a good way to help keep them full and growing.

Dear Webby's Joke of the Day

I was recovering from surgery when a charity representative phoned asking me to take part in a door-to-door fund-raising effort. "Sorry," I replied, "but I've been incapacitated."

Undaunted, the caller kept trying to convince me to change my mind and volunteer.

I interrupted and said, "I'm incapacitated. Do you know what that means?"

She hesitated. "It means your head was cut off?"

Vegetables for a Potted Garden

I am wanting to plant some vegetables in pots next spring. What kinds of vegetables can I plant in pots? I really like tomatoes and used to help my mother with those, but I am wondering about others.

Is My Son a Vegetarian?

My 10 year old son has never really liked meats from the time he was able to eat foods. His doctor at the time said he may become a vegetarian. I have tried everything over the years to get him to eat meats. I can only get him to eat poultry. He loves spaghetti but will pick out the meat.

What confuses me is that he will eat a cheeseburger from McDonald's but he won't eat one made from home. He doesn't eat vegetables either except for corn. Can someone please tell me if he is a vegetarian? Or is there a reason why he will only eat a McDonald's cheeseburger but nothing else that has any kind of meat?

Not Your Usual Turkey Sandwich

Now if you are like me, you cooked a turkey that was way to big for your family. Ours was a gift from our son in law, Jose. He bought us a twenty three pound bird and it was way too big, even though we fed a crowd. So for the last couple of days, we have been experimenting with turkey sandwiches. Now my husband Leo loves turkey sandwiches but he is a generic kind of guy and likes just plain turkey with mayo.
