The best thing I have found is to keep the onions in the refrigerator until you need one. The colder the onion is the less you'll cry. Peel them under cold water.

Try to keep a slice of lemon in your mouth! It turns it into acid and you don't cry. :P ( You can trust me because I love to watch National Geography Channel and Discovery):P :D

I find that keeping your onions cold, just before you cut them really helps. Try it your eyes will thank you.

Try cutting with glasses on with a piece of bread in your mouth. and as soon as your eyes start to water pop your head in the freezer for 30 seconds.
you look like a fool but it honestly works for me.
I'm the butt of the jokes when I cook though :(
Oh Well.

The best way I've found to chop onions is to cut them under water in a small plastic bin. Just make sure the onion is submersed and you will have *no* problem. Strain the water afterwards and collect your tear-free reward.

Well I tried the bread one and it worked until the bit in my mouth went all soggy and fell on the onion. That's when I gave up.

I've never had a problem when onions are being cut/peeled. I sit in front of the TV drinking beer while my wife does it!

Chewing Gum will help. Squinting or wearing goggles will help. I really don't reccomend squinting though lol

- suck on mint lollie
- wrap slighty damp clothe around mouth and nose
- breath through mouth
- stuff nose with tissues
- light candle or zippo near you
- wear goggles, ski mask or sunglasses
- put head in freezer every now and then
- cut the roots out of onion in a cone shape before you start chopping
- move away from onion to breathe

reason behind crying when we cut onion is vapor released while cutting onion gets contact with eyes and becomes sulfuric acid which irritates our eye so we cry.
the best would be soak onion in cold water well and start cutting onion which should have water while cutting so that the vapor can not get in contact with ur eyes

Keeping your mouth closed, cut the root end of the onion first- continue keeping your mouth closed while peeling and slicing- your eyes won't water!

Holding my breath seems to help a lot. And when you need to breathe, you go somewhere without the onion smell. exhale. inhale.. and you are back to work. no more tears

The only one that succesfully works here is the cut the top of the onion off . Looking at the scientific structure of onions this would make sense. The others are rather amusing but i did try them all for an experiment and yes, this one was the only one which worked.

Before cutting onions, wash it first then peel it and wash it again, then cut them. Guess what, your eyes won't water.

Apparently holding a pencil or spoon (sideways) under your tongue while peeling onions stops you from crying.

If you cry when you cut onions try this. Get a bowl of cold water and put your onion in the bowl with water and cut it. Your eyes will thank you and not even know your cutting a onion.

Peel onion under water. When ready to slice, run a small piece of bread, cut through the middle, up on the blade next to handle. The bread will help absorb the fumes.
