Gift Card House

I wanted something fun to give as a gift to my niece for her wedding shower so I made a gift card holder she can use at the wedding. If she wants to, she can pass it down to friends. This is a great way to display her engagement picture or any fun photos of her and her new husband!

Shellin' Out for a Unique Frame

Ever collected shells at the beach or just admire their natural beauty? Frames decorated in shells are always distinct (no two shells are the same), stimulate personal or collective creativity, and evoke a peaceful and harmonious atmosphere for years to come.

Hubcap Birdbath

This is my "Hippy Birdbath". I made it out of a PVC pipe and a hub cap. I used a glue, "Glue All", to put them together. It took a day to dry. Then I placed it in my rocks. The birds love it.

Making a Silk Bridal Bouquet

Thank goodness the days of HUGE Bridal bouquets has passed! Small, round bouquets with stems showing are being used more often in Weddings. Your local florist would be glad to bunch up a cluster of roses and tie with ribbon but believe me you'd pay dearly! And within a couple of days there is nothing left but photos of your flowers. By making a silk bouquet you have it for years to come, to keep with all your other wedding momentoes.

Tips:

Decoupaged Wooden Frames

I like to decoupage plain wooden frames. Recently I had an idea to use the frame as part of the entire scene. This one turned out great and looks wonderful in my bright Greek kitchen.

Putting Samplers to Use

I often teach my children basic embroidery stitches using simple designs. If you are helping a little one to do stitching, this is a nice way to put the sample pieces to use.

Add a backing with some lively scrap fabric by stitching inside out, and then reversing. Stitch up the opening, then stitch a final border around the little art piece.

Perfect little coasters that make nice gifts for teachers, grandparents, aunties, fathers, mothers...

Making something, instead of just doing a sampler, makes the project even more fun.

Grandson and his Easter Basket

This is a picture of my 11-month-old grandson with the Easter Basket that I made for him this year. I actually wove the basket myself! (Not too bad for a first-timer). I loved making it. I then put Easter grass in it and a few age appropriate gifts. It turned out great!

Making Decorative Magnets

You can buy a package of self-adhesive magnets at an office supply store. They are usually used for business cards. You can use these to make your own fun magnets.

Find pretty little pictures, plaques, sayings, etc. in magazines and catalogs, carefully cut them out, cut the magnet to size, and stick your picture onto the magnet. Very simple!

I recently found a set of 6 plaques in a catalog, made a little set of magnets from them, and used them to decorate the front of a cabinet. It looks like they are painted on, very chic.

Also these make nice little gifts to tuck into a letter to a friend, to cheer someone up or make them laugh.

Make Your Own Bleach Pen

Instead of buying those bleach Pen I took an old "Ghost" pen from the books that you get in Truck stops to keep busy, I put bleach in an old one that had dried out, I have used it on cottons with no problem. Or I dip a Q-tip in bleach and write away.

Use Scrap Wood for Crafts

I have collected 15 boxes of lovely wood such as knotty pine or oak and will use many of them to make birdhouses and craft items like Christmas ornaments or frames. They cost nothing for me. A carpenter wants to get rid of them and what is useless for crafts will be great for fire starters in our fireplace.

Stain Wood With Shoe Polish

Craft tip: If you have small pieces of unfinished wood that you would like stained, use liquid shoe polish. The applicator on the top helps keep your hands clean.

Drilling Holes In Sea Shells

I have many shells that I would like to make into necklaces but I don't know how to drill a hole in them?

Lynette from Michigan

Answers:

Use A Dremel

A Dremel tool works well also because it's higher speed than your regular drill. Especially good for delicate shells; use a very small bit.

Ceramic Drill Bits

Hardware stores carry ceramic drill bits; for drilling holes in ceramic tile; special hardened steel. I just used one with my regular drill-driver to put holes in about half a dozen shells for my daughter. Might not last as long as a diamond bit; but lots cheaper. I dipped the bit in a bowl of water before and during use, just to avoid dust and keep bit from getting too hot. If the shell is slick, it's a little hard to get it started in one spot, it keeps drifting until it gets a good start; but otherwise it was very simple. Not too much pressure, you can crack the shell; but I didn't have any problem.

Use Masking Tape

How about some masking tape down first and mark the spot where you want to drill. You can drill holes in glass using a normal bit, just keep the speed down and using some turpentine on the tip for lubrication so drilling a shell shouldn't be a problem. The tape will stop the drill bit from wandering and should take some of the vibration away so the shell doesn't break. Perspex, being difficult to cut, has adhesive backing which does the same thing as the masking tape. To be sure that the shell doesnt break, start with a small bit and work up. Don't use pressure on the shell, allow the drill to do the work. Use some turpentine to lubricate the bit. I am sure that you will find the best method, hope those tips help.

Organizing Craft Supplies In A Small Space

Hi I am Mackenzie and I am eleven years old. My nanny converted a unused bedroom into a "sewing room" many years ago and it has become cluttered because she can do a limited amount of things. Me, my mom, my two sisters and my brother moved in with her and my poppa approx. a year ago. We are now cleaning it up and should have it done by the end of this week or the middle of next. She is giving me a corner (about 6x7 feet) for all my crochet, papercrafting and sewing supplies. Today I put up two 8 foot wire shelves by myself and we are getting more than we thought we would done. I need some ideas on how I can organize my supplies into such a small space and it still be functional. She is also putting a about 4 foot desk in the corner to be my "craft table". It has a two shelf bookcase and she said if I wanted to I could put up another wire shelf.

Sorry, so long!

Knitted Hockey Socks

I have acquired (rescued) a fair amount of used knitted hockey socks (like leg warmers). They were on their way to the trash and of course I thought there must be something that could be done with them. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Handmade Specialty Paper
By Rachel Webb

The invention of paper, as we know it today, can be tracked to Leiyang China. Early around 100 A.D. paper is said to have been made using fermented and beaten mulberry bark fibers that were suspended in water and removed with a screen made from bamboo fibers tied with horse hair.
