Fun with Foamies: Valentine's Day Cards
By by Rachel Paxton

Foamies have become very popular during the past couple of years. You can find them in all shapes and sizes and for almost every holiday. They are great for children's craft projects, but anyone can use them to make easy, creative greeting cards. I found a big tub of Valentine's Day foamies at Walmart for just a couple of dollars, so I decided to try my hand at making homemade Valentine's Day cards with them.

This Valentine's Day project is a great activity to do with your kids. Children as young as toddlers can stick the foamies on the cards after you have done the initial cutting and gluing. Preschoolers can even help with that part. While I was getting the cards ready to put together, I gave my toddlers some blank paper and a handful of heart-shaped foamies, and they had a great time sticking them all over their pieces of paper.

I came up with four different designs for my Valentine's Day cards. The materials listed below will make one of each of the four cards.

Materials

  • Four pieces of red card stock
  • One piece of white card stock
  • Valentine's Day foamies
  • Paper cutter, scissors
  • Glue stick
  • Decorative scissors

Instructions

First use the paper cutter to cut the red card stock into the desired sizes for your cards. I usually determine the sizes of my cards by the envelopes I have to put them in. I have a stack of envelopes of all different sizes, so each card can end up being a different size.

Card #1

Turn the first card to open horizontally. I cut out four small squares of white card stock to glue in the center of the card to form one large square, with just a little space in between squares. I then placed a large red foamie heart in the center of each white square.

Card #2

This card will also open horizontally. For this one I cut out eight small white squares and glued them in two rows of four squares across the face of the card. In the center of each square I placed a small heart foamie, alternating pink and red hearts. I trimmed the bottom edge of the front of the card with decorative scissors.

Card #3

Turn this card to open vertically. I cut a large square out of white card stock and trimmed around all the edges of the square with decorative scissors. I glued the white square in the center of the card and placed a large red foamie heart in the center of the square.

Card #4

This card will also open vertically. First I cut a piece of white card stock into the shape of a rectangle, to be slightly smaller than the face of the card. I next trimmed around the edges of the rectangle with decorative scissors. I then cut two red pieces of cardstock into the shapes of squares and glued them one above the other inside the white rectangle. Next I cut out two white squares to fit inside the red squares. Lastly, I placed a medium-sized red foamie in the center of each white square.

That's it! These Valentine's Day cards are fun for anyone to make. You can make them in less than half an hour and people will think you slaved over them for hours! Dolce (Domestic Shorthair)

Dolce is a 1 year old Domestic Shorthair. She was a rescue kitty from the local Humane Society, 2 months ago.

She likes to EAT, EAT, EAT! She is not as playful as our other kitty, but she is so cuddly and sweet. We all love her. She is a fabulous addition to our growing family.

Today's Tips:

Save Money By Preventing Colds

You may ask what this article has to do with finances "Avoiding the Cold and Flu". But, consider the amount of money spent in buying over the counter relief products, money spent at the doctors office, fuel spent going to the doctor and pharmacy, and any loss wages due to being sick in bed, and you will see that the cold or flu can take a bite out of your budget. Many people don't properly fund their medical category in their budget and hope for the best.

We have all heard the basic common sense ways to avoid a cold, "wash your hands", "cover your mouth when you sneeze", and if your mom was like my mom, "don't go outside with wet hair" (although some medical experts argue against that one).

However, there are steps we can take to avoid getting the common cold and flu.

  • Wash your hands. (Mom was right). Wash before you eat, after the restroom, after you enter "hot spots" such as hospitals, daycare centers, doctor offices, pharmacies, using a public phone, public bathroom, touching money, using a grocery cart. I am sure you can think of several more that you come into contact with. If you can't wash your hands, carry a small bottle of sanitizer with you to rub on your hands.
  • Wipe down common use contact areas such as door knobs, telephone receivers, faucets, shared keyboards, remote controls, steering wheels (if you have a co-driver), mailbox handle. You don't need to carry around a bucket of bleach water, you can simply use a sanitizing wipe.
  • Get plenty of sleep. Your body requires proper rest for all your systems to operate at their best,
  • Eat well. What you eat is fuel for your body. Failure to eat properly will cause your immune system to suffer, You need a balanced diet including fruits and vegetables, protein (meats), grains... Notice this diet does not include chips, soda, or other junk foods. Feed your body junk food, and it will start to act like junk. Some studies indicate vitamin C supplements may also help.
  • Avoid stress when you can. Stress can upset the balance of ones body. This in turn can cause foods to not digest properly and for the sleep cycle to be interrupted.
  • Get exercise. I am not talking about the total body makeover. I am talking about walking to the mailbox or around the block. If you are new to exercise, see your physician before starting if it is going to consist of much more than walking.
  • Get plenty of fresh air. Go outside several times a day. Walk on your breaks from work, go out to get the mail or to just stand on the porch for a few minutes several times a day. During the winter if you can not get out, open a window for a few minutes and let the air circulate.
  • Change and clean areas where germs collect. One of the dirtiest places for germs to collect and breed is in your kitchen (you thought I was going to say bathroom, didn't you?). Wash your dishrags and sponges daily. Regular laundry detergent does not kill cold germs. The best way to clean your kitchen sponges is to zap them in the microwave for a minute after laundering. The heat will kill the germs. Change your toothbrush often, and after using pour a small amount of mouthwash or vinegar over it to kill germs. Baby toys may need be be wiped down, as well as the teething bar on their crib. While washing your dishes, add a small amount of bleach or vinegar to the water to disinfect. Change your furnace filters. Germs like to collect in them also. Many sources and TV ads tell you to use antibacterial soaps. However, I have heard several studies on TV and radio that are now saying some germs are becoming resistant to such soaps.
  • Avoid your exposure to others when you are sick. Not only for the sake of others, but for yourself. Your immune system is already weak, so you are at an increase to pick up something else.
  • Avoid being around those persons you know are sick if at all possible. If you must be around them, use good handwashing and keep your contact to the bare minimum that you can.

Printable Birthday Organizer At Realsimple.com

I went online to www.realsimple.com and they had a birthday organizer that you could download and print out, then I put the names and the dates of the birthdays on the months that were posted. I hung mine on the bathroom wall.

My daughter has some autistic problems and one is she likes to tear paper and she has killed my address book or calendar so many times. So now I carry a small calendar in my purse and have a small one by the microwave where I can get to and she doesn't really bother with it.

Plastic Canvas Bird Candle Holder

I had a pattern for a 3-D bird that my daughter wanted decorating the hall at her wedding. I took it a bit further and redesigned it to make candle holders for the tables. Each bird takes 1 sheet of plastic canvas at 33 cents, a voltage holder at 50 cents, a candle at 25 cents, and a small amount of yarn 2-3 yards at 50 cents. Making the price a very reasonable $1.58

Puppy Training

When we get a puppy we start out with lots of love and affection. We get a nice size box and put a clock that ticks (sounds like a heart), a cuddly blanket and a hot water bottle which we place under the blanket. When we take puppy out of the box for any reason, we immediately take him outside to go to the bathroom. We take him out to play or eat and outside he goes again. It takes about 10 days and you will have a housetrained puppy. With older dogs, it is easier to train one than two at the same time.

Buy Sandwiches or Snacks Before You Get to the Airport

I've really found that it's better to buy any sandwiches or snacks you might want to eat on the plane, on the way to the airport, if you don't make them at home. It's easier on your wallet than to purchase them in the airport restaurants or vendors. Also, remember to pick up any napkins or condiments you might need, too.

Maintain Your Boots In Brand New Condition

Cut off the legs from panty hose. Use plastic bags you get at the grocery store and stuff them to the size of your boot/shoe. You can also use newspaper. This will help your boots by standing up straight in your closet and looking new. Goodbye to those wrinkled boots.

Free (and Sugar-Free) Giveaway For Preschoolers

When my children's preschool had a special occasion that normally meant a lot of sugar (Easter Egg Hunt, Halloween, etc.), I would set a sugar-free example. I asked local pediatric dentists to donate toothbrushes for these events (they were small, colorful, and had the dentists' information imprinted on them). The toothbrushes were not only a hit with children and parents, the dentists got some free advertising too!

Use Tissue Paper When Sewing Chiffon

Sewing Tip: Tissue paper placed under chiffon makes sewing easier! When buying fabric the other day, I remarked how much I hated to sew with CHIFFON fabric because it's so thin, it sometimes gets pulled into the machine. Well, this gal had been sewing for 50 years and told me her trick: Put one or 2 pieces of tissue paper under the chiffon. This will easily tear off later. I can't wait to try it for any thin, troublesome fabric!

Dear Webby's Joke of the Day

A bus load of politicians were driving down a country road, when all of a sudden, the bus ran off the road and crashed into a tree in an old farmer's field. The old farmer, after seeing what happened, went over to investigate. He then proceeded to dig a hole and bury the politicians.

A few days later, the local sheriff came out, saw the crashed bus, and asked the farmer where all the politicians had gone. The old farmer said he had buried them.

The sheriff then asked the old farmer, "Were they ALL dead?"

The old farmer replied, "Well, some of them said they weren't, but you know how them politicians lie."

Valentine's Soda For Two
By Debra Frick

There is nothing more romantic than an old fashioned ice cream soda shared with your favorite sweetie. So here is a "sweet treat" for Valentine's Day that you can set out on your desk or, if you can't resist the M&M's, you can pull out the flowers and eat the M&M's and fill the glass with rock salt or colored sand. I choose Pink because it is one of my favorite colors but you can make this any color you want or fill the glass with any kind of candy you would like. This could also be used for a birthday gift also.

Time to complete: 1 hour, including shopping at the Walmart

Materials

  • One old fashioned soda fountain glass (bought at thrift store for $.50)
  • Lace and Ribbon all in one ($1.97)
  • Small amount of ribbon for a bow ($.44 for the whole spool)
  • One 14 oz bag of Cupid Mix M&M's ($2.00)
  • On small spray carnations ($.97)
  • One small spray of roses ($.97)
  • Couple of Straws
  • Hot glue gun
  • Glue sticks
Glue lace and ribbon trim around the upper rim of the glass. Tie a fluffy bow and glue where edges of lace meet on the glass. Fill glass with M&M's. Cut three carnations from the bunch of carnations and one open rose from the bunch of rose. Tuck the carnations in the glass in a triangle shape and add a rose to the center. Tuck in a couple of straws.

Saving Money on Cookies

Tips for saving money on cookies as suggested by the ThriftyFun community.

Cheap Cookies After Holidays

Supermarkets with bakeries in the store, regularly mark down cookies. After a holiday is especially good, they seem to be cheaper. Store them in the freezer. If you want a snack, who cares what holiday they look like. If you want to camouflage the holiday colors, add some icing! This can be cheaper than making cookies from scratch.

By Syd

Cake Mix Cookies

You can make 5 dozen or more cookies out of one box of cake mix. I wait until the mix is on sale for $1 or less and then buy enough for a month or two. (I bake once a week - cookies out of cake mix - and brownie bites: brownie mix with a bit more water than required baked in mini-muffin papers, making 6 dozen). This way it costs me $2 or less to provide snacks for the whole week. I used to make the brownie bites without the papers, but then they'd be gone in one day. The paper slows them down and makes them last at least 3 days.

Cake mix cookies: Mix the dry mix with 2 eggs and 1/3 cup cooking oil. Form into 1 inch balls and place on lightly greased cookie sheets. Flatten skightly. Bake 8-10 minutes at 375 degrees F.

The best flavor we've had so far is German Chocolate Cake. My daughter did not like the "funfetti" mix, but I liked it, so I think you'll have to just try flavors out and see what you like. The spice cake mix is good for quick holiday baking.

By Rabbithorns

Freeze Homemade Cookies Before Baking

It doesn't matter how much the supermarkets mark down cookies, you will still save money by baking your own. Find your favourite recipe and make as large a batch as you can handle. Roll it into evenly shaped 'logs' and cover with cling wrap. When somewhat frozen, carefully unroll and slice. Rewrap and freeze. Whenever you want cookies, just thaw out a sliced log, arrange slices on a cookie sheet and bake.

By Cathy

Buy Ingredients On Sale

Buy the chips, nuts, sprinkles, and such either in bulk or after holidays. Flour and sugar also. When baking, do two cookie sheets at a time, having two more ready to go while the first two are baking. Freeze them between wax paper in container or bag.

I've done the cookies from cake mix and they are delicious! Can also do the same with mix from scratch using the 2 eggs and 1/3 c. oil. For less fat, I've even used applesauce for the oil with good results.

By Thkgranny

Buy Tins of Shortbread Cookies After the Holidays

My husband likes those buttery plain shortbread cookies, that I've found at a local pharmacy in their food section, just after Halloween. I waited till the day after Christmas to stock up, when they were marked down (red and green wrapped package). I got them much cheaper then, and got a full shopping cart full of nothing but them. They keep well and hubby has them for his lunches for several months to come!
