Mikey (Dachshund)

Mikey (Dachshund)

Mikey is our 13 year old dachshund. We are fostering Mikey for the local animal shelter. He needed a home or he would be put down because he was too old and sickly to adopt or go to a rescue group. He has been with us 8 months, when we got him the vet gave him 6 months tops.

He sleeps a lot but loves to chase and play with our other dogs and cats. He also likes to wrestle with our arms and hands when we hold him.

Mikey is one of many we have fostered, most are for several days or a weekend. He is a long-term foster and has been a delight. Hopefully more people will foster elderly dogs for their local shelters. Some are a little extra work but all are well worth the effort. And our teenagers love doing it, is like having a new pet every week!

Today's Tips

What You Can Buy for 21 Dollars

Living on next to nothing is what I do on a daily basis, so when I get 21 dollars from a paycheck, you can believe I am frugal with it. This is my tip for you on what to do with 21 dollars. Go to the grocery store with a list of NEEDS in your pocket or purse written in non-erasable ink, then shop non-name brand only from off this list.

What you can get is this: toilet paper that is under a dollar, shampoo that is a dollar even (you don't need conditioner since this lasts a long time for some people), hamburger for one half pound on the cheap end with a sticker coupon on it, milk for a week and two days, cat food on sale or pet food, light bulbs (the cheap kind), and with the remaining money, go to the dollar store for chips and 2-liters of pop. While at the dollar store, pick up beans, pasta, and pasta sauce for the hamburger. This stretch should end your spending with change to save for another day.

The reason I am this frugal with it is I only get $525 a month from SSI. It was cut back to that from $603 a month, since I got an extremely part-time job to cure my boring lifestyle. It is where I get the 21 dollars extra a month. The work is all my disabled body can do. I am happy with it too. This is not a trick article. It is true. Hope you too live within your means. :o)

Quickly De-icing Your Windshield

Instead of using expensive de-icer on your car windscreen in the cold weather, or trying to scrape ice off with a rubber scraper thingie, pour warm water (not boiling!) over all your car windows and switch on the windscreen wipers to stop it freezing over again. This way you won't have to spend ages standing outside in the cold to de-ice your car.

Gifts For Crafty Friends

My best friend and I set up at craft shows, so always at gift giving time, we buy each other items that we can use to make crafts for our shows. She makes the crocheted towels so I always buy her some new towels to work on. We get a gift that we will turn into cash when we get it made, saves buying the items ourselves.

Major Car Repairs - Ask for a Rental Car Rental

If you are having a major car repair done and your car won't be available to you for days, or even weeks, ask the garage doing the repair to give you a loaner car to use while you wait. They may have loaner cars available for this purpose or they may arrange to get you a car from a rental agency. If they say no, call around to other repair shops and see if they offer this service for major repairs. It could save you hundreds of dollars if public transportation or a car pool isn't available.

Wake Up to a Clean Kitchen

Regardless of how tired you are, resist the urge to leave your dishes dirty in the kitchen overnight. There is nothing more depressing than waking up to a dirty kitchen.

Clean As You Cook

I also clean as I go and put dishes in the dishwasher as I cook. Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner is challenging, but I manage to keep a spotless kitchen.

Garbage Bowl

Keep a "garbage bowl" on the counter where you prep. I put a plastic grocery bag in it (but you don't have to). All the stuff you would normally go throw away, just toss in the bowl on your work surface. After dinner, scrape left overs into it and you make one trip to the trash can. The bag makes it convenient that all of the food that can go bad is now sealed up. I learned this from 30-Minute Meals.

A Gleaming Sink

I love waking up to a clean bench and sink. I even make sure that my sink is shiny as well, because when nothing else is done in the house (come on admit to it, we all have bad weeks/days sometimes), having a shiny sink and clean bench makes the morning that much easier to take.

Also, having the kitchen under control when the rest of the house needs attention, allows us to focus on other parts of the house that need some TLC.

Unfortunately, there are times when I wake up to a sink with dishes from the "dish fairy" in the middle of the night. I used to rant and rave about how unfair it was and my family would take on a glazed look and get disgruntled.

However, now I just do them anyway, and forget about complaining as it really gets me nowhere. Besides, I think there's more to worry about than a few dishes in the sink.

As a result of this attitude I've now found that my children and husband now think twice about just dumping things into the sink. I expect what I have been done has started to rub off on them.

We had a dishwasher in the house we sold a few years back and the house we bought was an ex-rental and devoid of "extras". In the last house I found it hard to get anyone to stack the dishwasher. No-one seemed to want to do it and things went into the sink instead. Now that we are living with no dishwasher I think the children appreciate how much extra work is involved and realize the work that goes into keeping the sink free of clutter.

I love waking up to my gleaming sink knowing that I can prepare breakfast without having to clean up first.

By Bev in Australia

I Agree

I agree with the clean kitchen crowd. It helps train the great big pink mice (or rats) that show up in the middle of the night. I long ago learned that it is easier to just "take care of it" rather than fuss about it.

A good accessory for a clean-kitchen babe is a timed coffee pot. That way, the coffee is ready as well.

After all, cleaning up takes just a few minutes--time yourself--AND it's cheaper than a shrink!

Leftover Soup

I hate to waste food and sometimes you might have that little bit of taco meat or sloppy joe meat left over. Save it in a freezer bag and the next time you are at a loss for something good and warm, take it out. I like to dice some potatoes, add water and let them cook awhile. Add a few cans of vegetables like corn and green beans and the leftover meat. Let simmer awhile then add a can of tomato soup. Makes a nice cheap soup. You can use whatever leftover vegetables you may have instead of canned. I have used cabbage, kale, carrots, leftover navy beans, leftover macaroni, etc. at various times. I don't worry about this soup becoming another leftover, there's never any left over!

Homemade Recycled "To-Go" Cup

No matter how many drink "to go" cups I buy, there never seem to be enough. In an emergency, I found myself cobbling one up from a recycled fast food cup - large - and making a lid by putting on a plastic yogurt lid which I cut to fit with little flaps cut into the rim on one side and then secured with electrical tape. I then cut a triangle in the lid and inserted a straw I had saved. Looks monstrous - but will do to save spills while on the go.

Discount Programs For Prescriptions

We are without prescription coverage right now despite having insurance. Today I went to Fred's pharmacy and they signed me up for their discount program. I had no idea how much I was getting off, just know I have to price my meds. every time before I am able to get them and then decide which is most important. So today, I had two that were filled. I got 2 scripts for $11.83. I was told retail cash price on them would have been about $32 total. So I figure 63% savings. I was blown away, to put it mildly.

There were no signs about this program that I saw, the clerk brought it up last time after I had already paid for my medication. She said we could do it next time. I was guessing I'd get 10% or something like that and that would have been great too, but this was fantastic. Thank God for that. Anymore we are doing good to pay for our highway robbery price insurance. Then can't afford to use it to go to the doctor! Then when I finally go to the doctor, sometimes I can't afford to fill the prescriptions for a while!! This saved the day because I figured I'd only been able to fill one of them today.

Orange Netting For Unconventional Gift Wrap

Believe it or not, unconventional gift wrapping is now considered fashionable and "artistic". I just used a recycled netting from a bag of oranges around a book with a card in the front and closed with squares of glittery mylar with holes cut into them through which I drew the netting to create a rosette of sorts - to great acclaim. (Save all that netting you run into - it's great for quick gift wrap.)

Little Boy Talking To An Old Man

A little boy was talking with an old man and he said "Sometimes I drop my spoon". The old man said "I do that too." Then the little boy whispered, "I wet my pants." "I do that too." laughed the old man. Then the little boy said "Sometimes I cry." The old man nodded and said, "So do I." "But worst of all", said the little boy,"It seems like grown ups don't pay any attention to me." That's when he felt the warmth of a wrinkled old hand. "I know what you mean.", said the old man.

I was wondering if a dark brown in the kitchen and a lighter tan in the living and rest of the upstairs would look ok?

Installing Radiant Heating Under a Bathroom Floor

We are looking at having radiant heating installed under our bathroom floor, in the floor joists to help heat our bathroom tile floor. We are told by our contractor this would solve our "cold bathroom" problem. He explained we would get a new 54 gallon water heater and the water would be dispersed into plastic tubing up against a metal deflector with water at 180 degrees, so our tile should feel about 80 degrees under our feet. Then the water is recirculated back to the tank at 100 degrees to reheat. Therefore, this is very cost efficient. Does anyone have any experience with this type of heating and what are the results? Also, what type of cost seems reasonable. We're looking at about 4,500.00 for approx. 20'X24". Any information would be appreciated!

Preparing Your Roses For Winter
By Ellen Brown

One question that comes up for many gardeners this time of year, is how to prepare their roses for winter. The harsh winter weather found colder zones (zones 6 and below) can easily claim the lives of hybrid tea roses, floribunda and grandiflora roses, unless they are offered at least some level of winter protection. There are several ways to prepare your roses for winter and which method works best continues to cause heated debates among rosarians. In my opinion, it doesn't matter which method you choose, just as long as it carries your roses through until next spring.
