Restoring Paint Hardened Paintbushes

Hardened paint brushes can often be made as good as new by simmering them in boiling vinegar for a few minutes, then washing them in soapy water.

Try soaking them in mineral spirits. You can find this at your hardware store. It is not costly and it works well.

Would paint thinner work? If it is latex (water-based), then of course paint thinner, a solvent, would not work. I would not know. I have thrown out a few latex-hardened brushes myself. (04/20/2007)

Wayne: Work a generous portion of undiluted dishwashing soap into your brush and put into a plastic bag, secure tightly with a rubber band and leave for a week, then rinse thoroughly. This will also work to clean paint out of paint brushes immediately after use (04/21/2007)
