Daisy (Husky/German Shepard)

Daisy was born on October 12, 2008. She's a Husky/German mix. We got her when she was 5 weeks old. She loves to play, fetch and run.

She's a very smart dog, she listens a lot. She learned really quick to be potty trained in 2 days after I got her. She loves to talk, it's so cute. She also loves to howl like a wolf and is very protective of her family. She would never bite kids nor women but, for some reason, she doesn't trust men, only the men in my family. She loves eating ice cream and loves rides in the car.

Radar (Pomeranian/Dachshund)

Radar is about 12 years old and is 1/2 pom-1/2 doxie. We bought him from a family friend For fun, he likes to be the boss! He was hurt 5 years ago from ice falling from the roof of a porch, he lost the use of his hind legs. We didn't want to put him to sleep because of our love for him. My oldest son who lives with me made a cart for him from a old baby buggy frame. He has been on wheels now since February 2004 and still going strong.

Contests:

These contests are weekly. We pick 2 tip winners and 1 photo winner at the end of each week. Each winner will win $25!

Today's Tips:

Use Receipts to Make a Priority Grocery List

I have a very limited of money to spent on groceries. Since I buy most of my food from Save-A-Lot, I have saved my receipts each week. When I had about a month's worth, I began making my grocery list from these receipts, as they list all the prices.

If I only have $40.00 to spend, I tally the items using the calculator and my receipts. I start with "must haves" like milk, bread, eggs, then secondly with meats and dinner items, keeping track of the total.

Then if there is money still left, I put down chips, snacks, and colas. When I run out of money, that's my list with everything totaled, it even shows the tax. I don't know how many times this has saved me from running over my budget.

Store Extra Blankets in Cushion Covers

To save space I made large cushion covers and folded my extra doonas up in them. Make the covers to match your lounge or sofa., and no one would guess. It's great if you have limited space, especially if you live in a small flat or unit.

By Margaret from New South Wales, Australia

Editor's Note: Wikipedia says: Doona is Australian for a padded blanket. Originally a product name.

Store Food Waste in Freezer Until Garbage Day

I can't stand to have smelly garbage waiting for the pick up every week. I keep a plastic grocery bag in my freezer and everything goes into it; egg shells, plate scrapings, bones, etc. plus I rinse all of my cans and TV dinner trays out before I throw them in the trash. No matter how hot it gets you never smell garbage.

I take it out on garbage pick up day, put into the un-smelly trash and put it out. It keeps the critters from getting into it too if you have more than one bag you have to set out before trash day. Nothing in it for them to smell and tear apart.

Minimizing Pores

For large pores, make a paste of almond meal (from the health food store). Put it on your nose, chin, or wherever your pores are large. Let it dry and rinse with cold water. Follow with an ice cube rubbed on face and nose. This works. I sometime add a bit of alum to it. You can also scrub your face with the Almond meal. It draws as it drys. Then proceed with your makeup.

I also use lemon to bleach my freckles when they get too many. Stay out of the sun.

Homemade Cat Toys

I saw my foster kittens were entranced by an empty Juicy Juice box that had a hole cut in the box and both ends taped shut and covered with paper, to where it made a box that looked just like a tissue box. A ping pong ball got stuck in it while it was on the table. They spent lots of happy moments batting this around, it was so cute.

I also use a plastic large waste container that will hold 30 or more gallons trash bags and use it for storage and invert the top and put something soft for them to lay on and look out the windows. They like it a lot, I also use it for storage of things around the house and will make a cover to fit over it and turn it into a table. The table idea I got from a person who told me to use these as storage and put a wooden topper on it, then a pretty tablecloth, for storage. I loved the idea. The cats have adopted these plastic trash cans to lay on, they love it.

Does Dog Urine Stain Hardwood?

I'm getting a new puppy and have all hardwood. It is an old house so the hardwood is real wood not the new laminate they have. Will urine cause any stains on the floor? Even if I should get it up quickly? I can't potty train her for another month because she is only 2 months old. Thanks.

Dog Urinates Inside When Left Alone

We have a small older dog (mutt) that is pretty much potty trained, except when no one is home and our door is open. He pees on our bed, right through to the mattress. What do we do, short of keeping him outside. He really is sweet.
