Gracie (Pitbull Mix)

Gracie is about 6 months old and is a Pitbull mix. We got her about a month ago from the local animal shelter.

She likes to PLAY and CHEW! She actually belongs to my daughter and son in-law. Gracie already knows what it means to come to "Grammy's house." (My house) She loves to come and visit and she is such a clown. She's long-legged and gangly and sometimes downright clumsy. So much fun! She sleeps with her mommy and daddy in their bed. She's a real snuggler when she's not ripping around and playing.

Use Email As Your Online Cookbook

I have one email address that I use as my online cook book or archives. I send all of my recipe newsletters to that address and have created folders that I store all my recipes in. I also copy and paste recipes that I find online and email them to myself. It is very handy because the title tells which recipe it is and I can search quickly. I can also email them to others in a jiffy. When it's time to write the weekly menus, I go here to see what looks good. I can also look for recipes that fit ingredients I already have. Here are my topics:

4th of July, Beans, Beef, Bread, Breakfast, Candy, Cheese, Chicken, Chinese Food, Christmas, Cookies, Crockpot, Desserts, Directions, Flylady, Good Ideas, Herbs, Kidstuff, Low Carb, Lunch, Main Dishes, Mexican, Pie, Pasta, Potatoes and Veggies, Soup, Salads, Sauces and Dressings, Seafood, Snacks, Soup, Substitutions, Thanksgiving, Tofu, Bisquick, Drinks, Home Remedies, Ice Cream, Pork, and Pressure Cooker. Funny, no Zebra recipes...

Use Teacup Saucer To Keep Yolks From Rolling

Hate wrestling with boiled yolks when making deviled eggs? I accidentally discovered that those saucers that have the indentions for the cups in them make a very good "holder" for when you mash the yolks gently and quicker, individually with a fork. Toss the mashed results into the mixing bowl with the rest of the ingredients just prior to refilling back into the sliced boiled white halves. These saucers also work well while stuffing dates, cherry tomatoes, etc., providing just enough of an "edge" over a flat plate or slippery bowl.

How To Have Fantastic Spring Color For Your Garden Or Landscape

Generally you should fertilize once in the spring, summer and fall. If your plants are not blooming, there could be a lack of phosphorus in your soil. Use a high phosphorus fertilizer to boost your blooms during the peak season.

Lower Salt Soups

When preparing homemade soups, use margarine instead of butter and herbs instead of salt.

14 Days of Valentine

Today, I started what I am calling the "14 Days of Valentine". I am leaving a pink paper heart and a small chocolate heart on my husband's pillow every day. On the heart I am writing "14 Days of Valentine" on the back, and an attribute of his that I like on the front. The first I wrote with a calligraphy pen, "You are Sweet". I will probably write more like "You are Kind", "You have Sweet Kisses", etc.

I just bought one .73 piece of pink posterboard, and cut out 14 medium sized hearts from that, and a $2.97 bag of hearts (a mix of peanut butter, crisps, and plain chocolate). You can have a big surprise planned on the 14th day, dinner, movie, etc., or I bet he will be ready to take you out on the town by then! Just use your imagination and have fun.

Packing Peanuts For House Plants

To lighten the weight of a planter (indoors or outside), fill the bottom quarter of your pot or planter with packing peanuts or styrofoam. This is really a four in one tip:

  1. It lightens the total weight
  2. It enables you to 'stretch' your potting soil
  3. It is good for the roots of plants
  4. It aids drainage
And it keeps that expanded foam out of your local landfill!

Dealing with Shrunken Underwear

If you have cotton underwear that has shrunk or just gotten a bit too tight, you can get a more forgiving fit by cutting the elastic waist band just a bit on one side. The cotton knit is forgiving and will stretch, giving you a better fit, and you can wear it a bit longer.

Healthy Valentine's Gift

This is for Valentine's Day but you could alter it to whatever day you want. I used a printing program and found a picture of the little heart candy with sayings on them. Below it I printed "How do I love thee? Let me count the ways." Instead of putting candy, I put pretzels in a large glass jar with a screw on lid from Walmart that cost $4 and found some gold ribbon from Christmas and put it around the lid for more decoration. Then I took clear strapping tape and taped the sign on the front. It was a big hit at his work. Now he has something to snack on while he is working and I know it won't be candy. And he thinks of me each time he sees it.

Cleaning Burner Drip Pans

Here is an excellent way to clean electric burner pans. Mix water and cream of tartar to a paste. Spread on burner pans and let set for a while. Rinse and wash with warm soapy water. For bad stains, let set overnight. Burner pans will look new again.

Tips From The Refrigerator Repair Man

I just had the refrigerator repair man out to look at my side by side refrigerator. I thought the evaporator fan wasn't working and my service contract is going to expire next month. He gave me several tips while he was here, which I would like to pass on.

First, when I told him I did not plan to renew a service contact, he explained to me the reasons I should renew it. Almost any problem that occurs today with a refrigerator has a cost to the consumer of over $200.00, that being the low end cost. Appliances have more plastic and electronic parts and are more apt to need service than the appliances made five to ten years ago.

Secondly, he advised me to dump the ice in the ice maker when it gets low, and completely rinse the ice container out top and bottom, otherwise frost builds up in the bottom of the ice maker. Mine had lots of build up!

The third and last tip he shared, was to not put any items on the freezer shelves that extend past the shelf, this causes the freezer door not to seal tight, thus costing me more in electricity and makes the refrigerator work harder to cool items.

One last thing, he said not to put large wine boxes on the top shelf of the refrigerator, as they block the air flow, due to the height of the wine box.

Discolored Linoleum

I had new wood-grain linoleum put on my kitchen floor. I had my dog's water dish on a carpet in the kitchen. When I went to scrub the floor, the floor underneath the water dish is now almost white. Is there anything I can do to revive the color in the floor?

Please help! My husband is going to be really upset.

Thank you,

Turning a Raised Pool Deck Into a Playhouse

I have a raised deck that went beside an above ground pool. We don't use the deck with the pool so it's wasted space. My friend had the idea of turning it into a playhouse; getting a plastic BBQ grill, play stove, small table, etc., at consignment stores to put out there. The deck is 8' x 13' raised, with 3 steps leading up to the deck with a swinging door. It has basic deck flooring with a railing and wooden lattice surrounding 3 sides about 2 to 3 feet up (I'll add a railing & lattice to the 4th side). My youngest daughter's birthday is in March so this would be a nice birthday surprise. Any suggestions for this project?

Thanks!

Stains on Stored Linens

Does anyone know how to remove an unknown type of stain. I stored a bedspread, sham and curtains that I made for my youngest child almost 18 years ago in one of those plastic bags that bedspreads come in. I took it out and where the items were folded there are yellow stains all down the fold. The bedspread has large spots. The bedspread/sham fabric is quilted cotton, I have tried soaking overnight in Biz, OxiClean, Chlorox 2 and no luck. Apprecaite any assistance.

Utility Shield Reviews

Has anyone ever had Utility Shield installed in their attic by Utility Management Association? It is a thin layer of aluminum laid over insulation in the attic. They report 30% savings on utility bills(gas & electric) by keeping radiant rays out. I would like to hear some feedback and what it cost.

Keeping a Destructive Puppy Entertained

I have a 5 month old Jack Russell Terrier Mix, wirehair female (spade) puppy and a five year old male (neutered) Whippet/Terrier mix dog. (Both are the same size, long legs and barrel chested)

I just adopted the puppy a few weeks ago as a companion dog for my older male dog.

I keep them both in the walk-in 'mud' room in the basement (where the washer/dryer/hot water heater are located). It has cement floors and walls for easy cleaning (think of a kennel run) and it's secure to keep them safe and out of the rest of the house during the day.

My husband and I work full time (leave the house at 7am, return at 5pm). We walk and play with our dogs while we're home and before we leave, but during they day they have both become 'destructo' dogs. He was a bit before we got her, but she's just horrible!

We can't keep carpet squares (for them to lay on off the cement floor), bedding, newspaper, etc in the room because she gets to destroying them, chewing and shredding. She had found a weakness in the cement floor and dug a hole into the dirt under it. We put large landscaping blocks over it. Problem solved. Now she's digging into any crack and crevice she can find including around the door frame.

HELP! I need to find ways to keep them both entertained, busy and challenged through the day. Unfortunately there is no one near (child or elderly individual) that can let them out to go for a walk during the day. Believe me, I've looked. So I know I'm prepared for her to make messes because she's a puppy yet (which she does on the papers on the other end away from her toys and bedding).

But I can't keep letting her be destructive, eating things like bits of concrete or plastic she's chewed off the toys or bedding bits. What can I make with things at home or inexpensive things I can find at hardware stores, dollar stores, etc to keep both of them busy, entertained, and challenged during the time I'm not at home?

Humidity And Your Houseplants
By Ellen Brown

Most houseplants prefer humidity levels of 40 to 50 percent. Unfortunately, the air inside our centrally heated homes usually falls somewhere near the 10 to 30 percent range during the winter. To houseplants (especially flowering houseplants), this can feel like living in the Sahara Desert. Here are some techniques for keeping the air around your houseplants humid (and healthy) this winter.
