Daily Thrifty Tips - September 19 2005

Daily Thrifty Tips
Volume Four, Number 226 September 19 2005
http://www.ThriftyFun.com

Hello,

We have 11 more photo contest entries to publish from the last photo contest so we will announce the winners on Friday. We will announce the winners of the tip contest on Thursday. We had hoped to do that earlier but with the server issues we haven't had time to sit down and pick the winners.

A new project that we have been working is a glossary for ThriftyFun. We hope to include a comprehensive list of terms relating to crafting, frugal living, gardening, green living, home improvement and food. So far we have added over 2,000 gardening and green living terms, most of which are made available by the EPA. If anyone is interested is helping us assemble a glossary on a particular subject, we certainly could use the help.

For example, we could use help putting together glossaries for food terms, quilting terms, beading terms, etc. Feel free to contact us if are interested in helping. We have pretty good lists of terms, but are just starting to work on the definitions. You can contact us at the link below:

Ivy and Queenie (Toy Poodles)

Hi my name is Ivy. I am a year old tiny toy terror, uh I mean poodle. I am very sweet unless you mess with my food or my people. I will take on a Rottweiler because I have never looked in a mirror so no one intimidates me. And for some reason everyone wants to take me home with them.

Today's Tips

Newspaper Bags for Messy Jobs

If your newspaper is delivered in plastic "sleeves", save these covers. Then when you have a really messy job to do, slip a pair of them over your hands and forearms as protective "mittens"; discard when finished. Especially helpful for those of us with arthritis who struggle to put on rubber gloves.

Coffee Grounds as Mulch

I learned this at a national coffee chain and it really works. Using your USED coffee grounds is a great mulch providing nitrogen to plants. I saved my room-mates nearly dead plant with coffee and TLC.

Bread stuck in the toaster?

Use a pair of bamboo chopsticks to get it out - much safer than using a knife.

By jammy1

Editor's Note: For safety sake, make sure you unplug the toaster before putting anything in there except bread.

Pre-threading Needles When Quilting

When hand sewing, I am partial to quilting, I like to thread several needles to be ready when I have finished with one length of thread. To be even more organized, I prefer to use a magnet to keep the needles and threads straight so I don't have to stop what I am doing just to thread another needle. Saves me so very much time and I don't have to search for where I left off anymore.

When I have gone through all my needles, it's time to get up and move around anyway so I am pleased with this arrangement. :)

Cooking Sweet Corn

Now that sweet corn is in season, a frugal way to prepare it and save time and water is to make it in your microwave. Use a gallon size freezer bag and place the peeled and cleaned ears of corn inside. Six will fit easily. Add about a half cup of water. Seal the bag three fourths closed. Microwave on high 8-10 minutes.

It comes out perfect every time! You can wash out and reuse the bag also.

Submitting Tips With Your Name or Moniker

I suggest very strongly that folks who submit tips also submit their names. I feel like I get know the people on this site because they do put their names. I like Robin's recipes. There are several Sandy's and we all use a different moniker.

By sandy

Editor's Note: We always encourage personalizing your posts. Many people have the same first name (like me, Susan) so it's good to think of something that helps identify you like "Susan from Washington State" or "Susan-WA." It's nice to know what state or country you are writing from.

Teething Kitten

Our 7 week old kitten has gotten into a bad habit of biting. Not little nibbles and licks either! He has also preferred his hard food the last couple of days, over wet. Could he be teething? He seems happy enough, playing, eating well, purring, sleeping lots. I also noticed quite a few new back teeth have come in. Any info on kittens teething would be great.

Too Much Laundry

I have tons of laundry, I have no organization, and its a chore for me to just keep my downstairs clean. I just close doors on bedrooms, because I just don't seem to have the time. Laundry on the other had is atrocious. My grandma says that it's because I am a perfectionist, which made me laugh quite hard, but it's basically because I can't see me completing it and so I just don't do it. That makes the most sense.

I can't see a light at the end of this tunnel. We have too many clothes, which I am slowly but surely getting rid of them as the older laundry gets done. I probably have at least 8 black garbage bags filled with dirty laundry, a couple of baskets and then we have the sheets and blankets which are just in piles. Can anyone help me get this dwindled down? I think the number one idea would be to go the the laundry mat, but that's also costly, anything else would be great.

Thanks!
Misty

Adding Zip to Our Living Room

Our living room lacks zip. It has an off white couch and dusty pink pillows. What contrast colors can I add? Sage green? If so, what else? I'd appreciate your ideas!

Putting Frontline on a (former) Stray Cat

I have an indoor/outdoor cat. This cat is not the cuddly type. He was a stray. We began to feed him, now he comes in and has become a little friendlier. But not enough for a bath, or even to put flea stuff on him. I pay a rescue lady to put frontline on him once a month, but her months are getting longer as she is so busy.

I wonder if anyone has a remedy for something I could use in-between her getting here. Sometimes it is 2 weeks after his month has expired before she gets back. He doesn't like canned food of any kind, therefore, I can't give him pills. He has trusted no one except me (he comes to me and sits in my lap) and I don't want to lose that with him. However, he will not allow me to put on his flea stuff, only the "cat lady".

I don't want to use a commercial spray on him as he cleans himself. Does anyone have any ideas?

P.S. He showed up the same day my dog died.

Buying an Environmentally Friendly Boat

I am moving down near the water and I would like to buy a boat, ideally a motor boat. I was wondering if there is an eco-friendly way to go about this. Are their eco-friendly boats with motors? Any info or tips would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Stan

Shrug (or Hug) Knitting Pattern

I'm looking for a pattern for a 'shrug' (or 'hug' as I've also heard it called). This is like a sweater, except it's only the sleeves, and a connection across the back! I've searched a lot of knitting websites, and only came up with one that I liked, but the pattern sounds really strange.

Any simple patterns are appreciated!

Thanks!

Theme Ideas for Spring Fundraiser Dance

We are having a fundraiser dance with silent auction this spring. Money raised will go toward improvements to the town "Herrick Park". We are holding the dance at a local Greek restaurant in the process of building a large banquet addition. We will be the first "event" held there.

Ideally we would like the theme to somehow reflect three things: the grand opening of the banquet hall, the improvements to the park, and the fact that it is springtime. I realize that fidning a theme that includes all three might be a stretch. I would be happy with any theme recommendations for any one of the three.

A few suggestions already given were an Olympic theme (since the Olympics started in Greece) and "Party at the Parthenon".

Thank you so much for any help!

Winterizing Windows

I have double paned, double hung windows but they still leak some cold air where upper and lower windows meet, even when they are locked. Last winter I put in some cotton batting, which was a real pain and time consuming. I am now thinking of using weatherstripping that has the sticky tape on the bottom and just run it across the joint.

I am concerned about pulling up the paint (I have white woodwork) when I will remove it next spring. Any other suggestions for plugging up these air pockets? Is there any spray stuff that can be used which is easily removed? With heating costs going thru the roof, I need to do all that I can to eliminate drafts. Thanks for your input.

Cheap Recipes For Australians

I'm from Australia and over here we pay top dollar for everything, I am just wondering how you people over in America survive week to week especially people on welfare. I only get paid once a week and I only get say around $281.00 to pay the rent, utility bills, food etc.

I've noticed some of the staples you people use over there are WAY CHEAPER than what we pay over here. EXAMPLE: 420g of tuna in water costs us $4.20 to $5.00 depending on the store. Over in America you only pay 47 cents, unbelievable! Meat over here is $6.00 per kilogram for fatty hamburger mince ( think you Americans call it GROUND BEEF?) and $8.00 or more depending on your butcher/store per kilogram for premium mince with little fat. A 3 litre milk over here is about $3.20. Potatoes for 5 kilograms I pay $2.65 but I have to wash the dirt off them myself!). Mushrooms are $6.20 per kilogram and if you want any fancy ones such as shitaki it'll cost you more.

Of course our government brought in G.S.T or Goods and Services Tax which makes it even more harder to live week to week, sometimes I have almost nothing left over 2 days from the next payday with 2 young growing children to feed.

Bills over here are also high, it's normal to have a $220 (if your doing well) electricity bill which is billed every three months mind you and then there's the gas bill which if you are doing reasonably well is $120 which is also billed every three months. Land rates (if you own your own home in south australia in Adelaide in one of the rougher suburbs is $580 a year. Then there is an emergency levy that the council bills you every year $58. Also forget about owning a car over here, petrol is $1.30 per litre! (we are getting fleeced blind, over there in America I think you pay the same but per gallon (4 litres) not for one litre.

Then if you have a large family there are birthdays and such to account for. The list goes on and on and on. There are charity family stores where you can go to get cheap furniture and the like but now they are mostly run like a second hand store,.no cheap prices anymore. If you want a cheap veneered table your looking at paying around $80 or more for it. only if it is not so good condition. For a double bed I went to the Salvation Army and paid $120 for it (they wouldn't even budge on the price and I had my 2 children with me and I was not doing well at the time).

I need some good healthy recipes that can be made using items that can be found cheaply in Austrailia.

Katie

Permanent Marker on Unfinished Hardwood Floor

After 2 days of sanding down a hard wood floor to refinish, my 3 year old decorated it with green marker. Does anyone have any tips on getting it off without having to resand? I have tried alcohol, peroxide, magic eraser, and green mean. I am in fear I am going to have to resand, but thought I would try here first.

Soft Drink Stains In Car

I have been told that shaving cream works on carpet to get up some stains. I have spilled soft drinks in my car over the years. The carpet is in very good shape except for these spills. There are also some on the passenger seat which is fabric. Will shaving cream work on these also? I have used wet wipes to get up some of the soft drink spills off the seat but what is left is stain. Any help would be appreciated.
