Why does my 1997 Buick Lasabre shift into overdrive with a bang?

My simple bet is the solenoid that does this "shifting" in the transmission is on it's way to failure. I'm thinking it isn't overdrive but the mechanical "lock-up" that occurs in these transmissions as a fuel savings effort.

It means a trip to the shop - and if you haven't had the transmission serviced it's way overdue anyway. I've used Cottman several times. If my bet is wrong, it's something more serious and means a shop trip anyway.

It sounds like a transmission problem.
