Can't Get Rid of Lice |
|
|
My sister and niece have lice. My sister has taken her daughter to the Doctor. He told them to get Rid. They couldn't find it at the drugstore but they did find Nix. They used it and did everything they were told and It didn't work.
My sister called the Doctor back and was told to saturate both of their heads with mayonaise and leave it on for 8 hrs. They did that and for almost a week they thought they were gone. They hadn't seen any until today. The Doctor prescribed something called Ovine.
With the insurance they have the meds were still going to cost $123.00 and that was just for my nieces head. They don't have much money right now and $123.00 to her may as well be a million. Please, if anyone knows anything that will work I would love the feedback.
They were supposed to come to my house for Thanksgiving because they didn't have anything but now with the lice I can't take a chance of anyone else getting them. My niece is 2. Thank you so much!

I'm going through this same frustrating problem. I hate lice. What frustrates me is that kids in our school district can still go to school with the nits in their hair. How crazy is that? It kinda defeats the purpose of working so hard to get rid of it. What if one of the nits hatches when the kid is at school and it gets in my daughters hair? AHH!
I have spent 7 hours in the past two days working to get rid of lice. Her hair is so long and thick. It is a nightmare. I wish there was somewhere you could take your kids and you could pay someone to remove it all from their hair. That would be a godsend. Good luck to everyone going through the same thing. I really feel for all of you. I wouldn't wish this on anyone.

I found out my daughter had head lice just before school started in September. I tried Nix a couple of times, mayonnaise, and tea tree oil, and still was not able to eliminate all of the lice, or at least not all of the eggs. After a month of daily combings, extra laundry and vacuuming, and frustration, I tried a new over the counter product, LiceMD.
This product does not contain pesticides or other harmful chemicals, and also does not have any odor. It is very slippery, and allowed me to comb out 100% of the lice AND eggs on the first application!! It was almost like a miracle. I would definitely recommend it!

RE: Can't Get Rid of Lice
I had this problem with my kids years ago. It was traumatic, which is why I am responding to this even though it isn't a current problem. I wish I had known about the mayonaise treatment and about vinagar. I didn't spend a lot of money on treatment, but at that time it was a lot of money I didn't have to spend. I would never wish lice on anyone even though for some reason I didn't get it. It was so hard watching my kids go through it, cleaning bedding and all that didn't drive me as crazy as watching my kids suffer with this. Maybe if everyone would do the non-chemical treatments they would just go away. I am thinking about using almond oil on my head even though I don't have lice it sounds like a lovely spa treatment type of thing. Thanks for that it is useful information for anyone.

I had a similar problem with lice when my kids were young. I found a cheap cure and wrote about it recently on my blog. It's in the form of a story; the cure is closer to the end: http://leafsouplife.blogspot.com/2008/04/lice.html

I had lice too. I had them for 3 - 5 weeks before we realized. And by that time the nits had gotten into EVERYTHING!! I was at my wits end because I couldn't hug my friends or even cuddle my boyfriend for fear of giving it to them. We tried several harsh products that ruined my hair.
I found the best way was to SMOTHER my hair in mayo, wrap it in cling/glad wrap + leave for 8 hrs. Then, wash it out with shampoo, put in conditioner + then get mum to run the nit comb through. I done this once a week for 3 weeks, with mum running the comb through every second night. This worked! No more nits! However, I was left with thousands upon thousands of dead eggs. But oh well. At least there's no more ITCHING!! LOL! =] Hope this helps.

My children came home with it also and yes it's costing a small fortune. Between the drug store stuff I used a mixture of dawn, vinager and baby oil and combed and combed! My grandmother said straight vinager which I have read loosens the "glue" on the nits so they comb out. They just had a news cast in our area about SUPER LICE immune to the drug store stuff. I am vaccumming like a maniac, pickining my kids head like a monkey and itching all at the same time. I have girls if they were boys there heads would be shaved allready! This is horrible. Please people if you know your kid has lice DO NOT send them to school!

We've used two nix treatments. We've added tea tree oil to our regular shampoo.
Had the daughter oil her hair last night. Still, found a crawler!
Have washed and dried and washed and dried and vacuumed.
Today we'll try the mineral oil method, and perhaps rinse with dawn and maybe vinegar too.
And of course, comb comb comb.

My 6 yr old daughter came home with them on June 4th (last day of school was the 5th) and we treated with Rid, combed and everything (2 hours worth) and on the 12th I get a call from daycare....they're back, treated again with Nix (2 more hours of combing), look on the 20th, another bug found! I am so tired of dealing with this. I found a non toxic homeopathic brand at Walgreens that says to leave it on for AT LEAST 60 minutes. She wore if for 90 give or take. I have vac'd my house about 50 times, all bedding and pj's are dried 40 minutes in the morning and a load of laundry has been done nightly. We went overboard (had to clean out the kids old clothes anyway) and pulled everything out of dressers, bagged what we are getting rid of, washed the rest. The kids haven't been in their rooms for 2 days and can't go in them until tomorrow (in an effort to quarantine the problem). Tonight we will do Denorex for 20 - 30 minutes (for live bugs), rinse with listerine (from another site), Coconut conditioner left on to comb through the hair, rinse, dry with blow dryer, straighten with a straightener (for eggs) and then run a little tea tree oil in the hair and tomorrow when she goes back to daycare it is going in a bun!
This last 3 weeks has been AWFUL! I am going to go nuts if we can't get rid of them.

My daughter has been battling head lice for almost 3 months now. We've tried Nix and other similar products. Every week I have done a chemical shampoo treatment. Every time I think we beat those nasty critters, I see more nits. I am becoming obsessed with this! Every night I go through her hair with a lice comb, hair dryer and hair products and its not getting any better. We were even away from our house for 60 hours, so the ones that might have been hanging around her room or the rest of the house should have died. Right? Then she was on a week break from school (Spring Break) and wasn't in contact with anyone. So they should have been gone. NOPE. My other daughter hasn't gotten these guys yet. They must really like my 12 year old. I am at my wits end and don't know what else to do. She is sick of me looking through her hair every night like a mother monkey, but I told her I have to. I can't do theis forever, I don't know what else to do besides cutting off her hair!! HELP!

My kids school got rid of the no nit policy. They said it was because kids were missing to much. This is the first year my kids have had it. I have been dealing with it for months. Did nix treatment, did bedding, bought new pillows, and put toys in bags for 2 weeks. Also used dog shampoo.they just keep coming back. I thought about homeschooling.yep I'm desperate too.

Tell her to use any thing with coconut in it. You can use coconut oil or shampoo or conditioner. Wash hair in shampoo, towel dry head, then use conditioner use lots of it. Leave it in till the next day. Keep using it all the time. Tell her to switch to coconut. It also repels lice.

I caught lice just from trying on a hat at walmart, didn't notice anything for a few days, almost a week, and now I'm itching everywhere, it turns out their bites can cause an allergic reaction and make you itch and get hives literally everywhere... I've used lice spray on all my bedding and clothing (i know its not recommended for clothing, but I washed them after wards, that seemed to work for that, I used lice shampoo, then tried the mayonnaise thing, and dawn dish soap mixed with vinegar, i went all out brutal on these things because once their there, They are there to stay unless you do something about them...
I've heard that the best thing for clothes without bnagging them or trhowing them away is washing them on high heat and add a cup of vinegar...
I'll shut up now but that seems to work

My daughter came home from school with head lice. I use vinegar in her hair, it seems to works and also use a metal fine pix comb to comb out the nit and dead lice. Sent her to school she was clean but i was having problems with my own hair doing it myself to get rid the nits. I know that washing your hair with vinegar works also using the the metal comb through your hair. It was hard doing your own hair when you have no one to help you

My daughter had the same problem, after way too many dollars I simply mxed conditioner with water into a spray bottle and went through her hair with a nit comb EVERY DAY. The problem is other people not doing the right thing. When I send her to school I plait her hair and spray it with hairspray.....so far so good. My daughter has very very long hair and nits are a nightmare...GOOD LUCK!

I tried the rid ex. It killed the live lice. But the nits are almost impossible to get rid of. My little girls hair is very long and thick. She has been treated 4x in the last week. i still see the nits but not as many. I spend 3 hours a night trying to get them out. To loosen them up i made tried a home made solution of Dawn dish detergent 10 Oz. 10 Oz of white vinegar and 2 ounce of tree oil. I also used a bottle of shower gel 12 OZ with 5 tablespoons of salt. They seem to come out allot easier now but it is going to take time. Every-time she goes to the nurse at school and they find one nit they send her home. Its a losing battle. My doctor prescribed a special shampoo that said it would kill everything..It was 125.00 a bottle. I was also told lamp oil would work but i do not know if i want to go there. I would recommend the over the counter solutions and then shampoo every day with the dawn/vinegar solution...i also wash her bedding every-night

Being a daycare provider and foster parent for over 15 years my guess is the home and surroundings are not being cleaned properly including the car and carseats, stuffed animals and hair pretties and combs and brushes. Mayo does work when the home is done right and ALLLLLLL the nits are removed by hand. You must be dilegent with the picking.

I'm dealing with this problem with my daughter; the first time we used Nix we didn't understand how important it was to get rid of every nit; a few days later they called us from the school telling us to come get her because she had headlice; now we've treated her again and have spent the last 48 hours picking out the nits, or "nit picking" as it were. If I can't get them out with my fingers I try to isolate the strand of hair and cut it out. However it's ike like trying to plow the sea, as some poet said.... Do these nits survive the nix treatment? I don't know what to do, but I'm going to my neighborhood Wild Oats store to see if there are natural remedies, 'cause I don't want to use the pesticides on her head any more.

I agree schools should have a lice check day once a week and bring back signed note of clearance. Also nothing works except hard work. Pick out those nits only way to get rid of them. Always use mayo never pesticides. We should make this a world wide day/days. Paid holiday. Like labor day. National head lice check/removal day. Lets talk to our MP's about this.

My daughter has had head lice for almost a year now and I just cant get rid of them. Like others i have spent so much money on all different products and nothing has improved it. I have seen a couple new ideas on here that I'm going to try and use and I'm PRAYING that it works. My daughter is going to be starting K-3 soon and I have to get rid of them before she starts. So once i use some of these different methods i will let you know if they worked!

I got headlice from my friends little sister when I went to her house, I had no idea she had it untill the next day. I used some product that is supposed to kill lice and nits, I found a few dead ones after I combed out with the nit brush, but there wasn't enough to do a second treatment today. I changed my bed sheet, the cover on my duvet, my pillow cases on all the pillows in my bed. I'm going to the drug store for some hair dye today because I heard it killed the lice, but I also need for my roots too. And some of you said that coconut shampoo/conditioner works too? I'll pick some up while I'm there too. But the thing is, is that I probably didn't get all the bugs and nits so I'm going to have to change my bedsheets and everything else again. I have a leather couch, do I still have to worry about cleaning that?

THIS IS EVERY MOTHERS NIGHTMARE.IT TOTALLY CONSUMES YOUR WHOLE LIFE ALONG WITH YOUR FAMILIES LIFE AS WELL.I DID A LOT OF RESEARCH, IT SEEMS LIKE THESE THESE BUGS ARE IMMUNE TO A LOT OF OVER THE COUNTER TOPICALS.I THINK TO OUTSMART THEM CAN BE POSSIBLE ONE DAY. IV'E REALIZED THIS IS SOMETHING WE HAVE TO ACCEPT AS PARENTS.WE CAN TRY TO PREVENT THIS BY WORKING AS A TEAM IN SCHOOLS, EVEN IF WE ALL HAVE TO USE THE SAME TEA TREE/NEEM OIL/ROSEMARY SHAMPOO. PERHAPS WE SHOULD HAVE EVERY THURSDAY LICE AWARENESS DAY! IN SCHOOLS! AND MAYBE A PAPER YOU SIGN, TEAR OFF AND GIVE IN THE NEXT DAY SAYING YOU HAVE LOOKED THROUGH YOUR CHILD'S HAIR AND ALONG WITH SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS ON WHAT TO LOOK FOR. I HAVE GIVEN BOTH MY BOYS CREW CUTS, MY 2 YEAR OLD'S BLOND CURLS ARE GONE, YES IT'S HAIR IT WILL GROW BACK, BUT COME SEPTEMBER I WILL BE GETTING INVOLVED WITH THE PTA ABOUT PREVENTION OF LICE! WE ALREADY HAVE A NO NITS POLICY.,THIS NEEDS TO BE TAKEN FURTHER......ANGELELLA2006 AT VERIZON.NET

www.liceice.com My daughter had lice for a year- I tried EVERYTHING< my mom even made the coconut oil/tea tree concoction which just ran them off for a few days. I found Lice ice at the drug store, and other than it's obnoxious minty smell, no complaints about the product. RID and NIX do NOT WORK anymore, lice have evolved to be resistant to chemicals. I even broke down and tried doggie shampoo- So, what did I do to rid of the critters? I colored her hair (blonde the same shade she was) and then followed with Lice Ice 5 days later (a few babies hatched) seriously- it contains tea tree oil and is effective. Be sure to wash all bedding and take away all stuffed animals for at least a week (or bomb for bugs). you can get an extra tube, put in an old hair spray bottle at a 1 to 4 ratio and spritz daily to prevent re-infestation. Perms/straighteners will also kill the critters as well, but will not get rid of all the eggs, so you have to do something right when they all hatch, before they lay more (lice have a 7 day cycle before they can lay new eggs).

And it really works. If you cant get it in your local area, reply back and ill try and help you find the clostest place to get this. I have long hair. My daughter and I got lice from my niece and have had it for six months. We have tried RID, Nix, Denorex, about 4 things prescribed by the doctor and everything else that is over the counter. We have even used the very expensive Ovine and it did not work. My little girl is only two. I am not liking using these chemicals on her. If anyone comes up with a sure fire way to get rid of them, please email me. No kerosene emails please, I would not use that method. It sounds to dangerous.

my sister has fought lice with one of her children 3 times a year for 2 or 3 years but she has 4 children, but only one kept getting it she was that careful of not spreading it the first time 2 years ago her and her 2 daughters had it bad months and months she tried to get rid of it, used nix once and twice daily actually sat down with her kids and picked the nits out, till finally... it was done but it was a chore, and as far as her she actually used kerosene, not something she wanted to do but actually had no other to make sure she got rid of them. She said she would never do that again. burnt her scalp really, really bad. Well anyway I now am dealing with my first case of head lice 36 years old, 3 kids, and i am the only one who has it,,, holy itchy,,, and 2 of my kids are in school. not one case of lice all year. one month left of school. all i can tell you is thank god for my sister, and her experiences, now i know what to do and she is even keeping my 4 year old till i get everything cleaned up in my house.. and i can run to her house and she can pick my nits hopefully that will take care of all this for me and you. it's all in getting the nits out of your hair.

You don't need to do anything special to get rid of head lice! Just use coconut shampoo (Suave is good) Coconut oil destroys their exoskeletons, not poison. After that, put shaving cream in the hair & comb through to loosen the nits. I did this & it worked like a charm, after spending I don't know how much money on the stuff in the drugstores made to kill lice the previous three months & NONE of it worked. Coconut shampoo works instantly & I use it all the time now as a preventative. My family will never be without it!

I was having a problem with lice in my family. For some weird reason I am the only one that gets it. I heard this from a friend. This is what i did. i put a small amount of pure Almond oil in my shampoo you know just to make sure that it is clean too, then I covered my hair with that almond oil. after it dried i used the lice comb to pull out any nits or bugs. It's great I didn't have to use any harsh chemicals on my color treated hair and it works. Not only that i had a great hair day the next day the almond oil is very relaxing and made my hair so soft.

Head Lice is very hard to get rid of you have to use the lice combs everyday but after that switch to a shampoo and conditioner that has coconut oil in it the lice can not stand the smell/taste of it .

My main question is do I really need to wash all of my pillows/blankets/couch cover/ etc. It's a TON of work! I am about to go away on vacation for a week, but I am not sure how long they can survive without me...and can they get in the carpet? I have just retreated my hair and have 2 more nights to sleep here before I go...so I'm thinking I should wash the beding at least.
I am seeing conflicitng information about this part of the lice removal process
Thanks for your help!

In florida all schools have lice break outs. WHen I first moved here I was in shock because I never heard of such a thing. They get rid of it easily by dyeing their kids hair the same color and no one is wiser. At first I thought no way would I put those dye chemicals in my daughters hair. Well after trying the lice meds (flea dip in creme form) and combs I let my friend dye her hair. It didnt look any different and her lice problem was gone. of course we washed all her bedding etc also.

RE: Can't Get Rid of Lice
We have lice breakouts 2 times a year in our area and chemicals don't kill them.
We use mayo or baby oil mixed with a few drops of tea tree oil. Put lots of it on their hair and cover with a shower cap for 1 hour. Keep it away from the eyes. Wash out with Dawn, rinse well, then do a final rinse with vinegar and dry with a hair dryer.
When the hair is completely dry we used a Robi Comb (battery operated lice comb found in the lice shampoo isle) to remove anything left. We used the comb everyday until we were lice free for 14 days. After the lice are gone we use the Robi comb once a week or anytime we see someone scratching their head.
Shampoo and conditioner with coconut oil is supose to keep lice away. Tea tree oil can be added to your regular shampoo, it is good for your scalp and may help prevent lice.
Yes, you must wash clothes and bedding and vacuume everything! Put pillows and stuffed animals in a hot dryer for 30 minutes. Alcohol works on brushes and combs. Things that can't be washed and dryed can go to the dry cleaners or stored in plastic bags for a few days.
A hint from the church nursery director. If you can't face cleaning every inch of the house, just lock it up tight and go on a 3 day vacation. Treat the kids heads, pack up lice free clothes, and take off! Lice die after 55 hours without a human host. If you can afford to be gone for at least three days, you will return to a lice-free environment.
Good luck! Love & Prayers, Linda

Try this again, I posted without signing in. Head lice eggs can't survive on a non-human surface for more than about two hours. Manic cleaning of the entire house is unnecessary. Washing the bedding in hot water I would do and any stuffed animals on the bed I would bag up and put in the freezer for a couple of hours for good measure. Other than that freaking out and cleaning the whole house is not needed. I am a hair salon owner and deal with questions on this topic often. YOU MUST TREAT THE WHOLE HOUSE TO RID THE INFESTATION. ALL THE CLOTHING AND BEDDING MUST BE WASHED IN VERY HOT WATER TO KILL THE EGGS. ALL THE FABRIC COVERED FURNITURE MUST BE SHAMPOOED AND THEN RUN OVER WITH A VERY WARM IRON - SAME WITH THE CARPET. TOO MUCH MEDICATED TREATMENT WILL DAMAGE THE HAIR. TEA TREE OIL DUMPED IN THE REGULAR SHAMPOO AND HAIR SPRAY WILL WORK AS A PREVENTIVE BUT WILL NOT RID ONE OF THE INFESTATION. AFTER TREATING WITH THE MEDICATION THE HAIR HAS TO BE COMBED WITH A VERY FINE COMB TO REMOVE THE DEAD INSECTS AND LARVAE. GOOD LUCK - IT TAKES DILIGENCE AND THOROUGHNESS TO RID THE HOUSEHOLD OF THESE PESKY LITTLE BUGS.

Saturate head and hair in tea tree oil and wrap a towel around head and let it sit. Wash out. Repeat this every 3 to 4 days and work at those nits with a small comb to remove. This is a safe alternative that works. Never use Rid or Nix or other type of "treatment" especially on young children as it can cause brain damage.

I've heard that hairspray works well, because then the lice can't breathe, but this may just work for the ones that have already hatched.
Also, try a hairdryer on high...I've heard that this effectively cooks the lice, eggs and all, but only if you concentrate on every single strand of hair on the head and concentrate on the scalp area.
And don't forget to treat anything that the head touches, like pillows, brushes, bedding, scarves, coats...etc.

Have they been swimming in a chlorinated pool? The chemicals in the pool stop the head lice treatments working. Teachers always know there will be a lot of head lice in their classes when the children are taking swimming lessons.

Please let your sister come to Thanksgiving! They do not need to wear shower caps! Yes, use Rid, then use the fine tooth comb to go through the hair that is covered in spray detangler. Have a Kleenex handy to clean the comb off each time. Then boil the comb after each use. Then we used the Denorex ES and rinsed with vinegar, then coconut conditioner. Do this each day, then spray with detangler and comb with the nit comb until they are gone. Tumble in the dryer her pillow and coat each day for a half an hour. Retreat with Rid after ten days and keep up the Denorex (has some kind of natural acid in it for dandruff), vinegar, spray conditioner, combing for another week. I have only one child that gets lice, out of my three. I don't know why they like her, but shes had it twice in four years and this method worked great each time and it did't spread! She now uses Denorex to wash her hair a couple times a week, just to keep anything at bay! Good luck to her!

Head lice cannot jump or fly! They can crawl only. They will not jump from one head to another. If your sister and niece have been treated and have no live lice in their hair at the present time it is fine to be around them. If they have missed some nits in the hair you cannot catch them, even if a nit were to fall off of their heads it is simply an egg and cannot attach itself to you. It also cannot survive for more than two or three hours on any surface, it needs a live host. If you do a web search on head lice you can find all of this information. DO NOT use kerosene ever, very dangerous!!!!! Children have been blinded and also killed by this insane method.

I dont blame you for not wanting to risk getting the bugs in your home, but I couldnt tell my neice and sister not to come because of it. My advice, have them wear a shower cap that would keep anything from jumping off them onto you or your furniture. Also have them do their hair right before they come and wear just dried clothes, the heat kills the bugs, if their is anything left in their hair after doing it it will only be eggs which are stuck to your hair roots and arent going to get on your stuff. Have them put a hat over the shower cap so looks better or something. Family is what its about you should make every effort to get them there.

We used every suggestion posted, but my granddaughter had a recurring problem all summer. Seems her friend was reinfecting her. The friends family did not work hard at trying to get rid of them. We discovered a product online called Licerx, made by Selmedica. It is an all natural remedy. It took a few applications, but it was they only thing that worked. it's a little pricey, but we were at our wits end and many dollars poorer. I've misplaced the website, but type in headlice and it should come up. We were getting concerned about the use of chemicals and the other "natural" remedies did not work. I recommend it.

Use a fine comb and hair conditioner, apply the conditioner to dry hair and comb out. Use a paper towel to clean your comb after each comb through. You will be able to see the lice .(gross) Do this every day until you get a clean comb through. I did this every night for about 4 night on all three of my children before they had a shower. It worked for me. And it doesnt hurt their head or my hip pocket.

lice
I found that picking the nits out of my daughter's hair was what finally got them all out. The metal comb works a little, but I had to go through her entire head of hair virtually strand by strand to make sure. Sounds gross, but I just used my thumbnail and forefinger to pull down each strand (or maybe 3-5 strands at a time in actuality). I had to do this twice over her whole head.

The key to getting rid of lice is to clean, clean, claen. Wash everything--bedding, toys, carpet, spray furniture, Also, you have to treat the hair 2 times. The nits will hatch about every 7 days. Vegetable oil with crushed garlic will work too. Cover the hair with a showercap and wait a few hours. I don't blame you for not wanting them to come to your home. Lice are very hard to get rid of--I know-massive breakout at the school afew years ago. Also, wash hair in rosemary shampoo. You have to get it at a beauty supply but it's worth it.

My sister in law was told to use Crisco. Put it on their heads, put a shower cap on and leave it there for a couple of hours. It smothers them.

Another thing to remember.....get all the stuffed animals that the child sleeps with and put them in a plastic bag, cinch it with a twist tie and put them outside for at least a week. Vaccum the floors as well, and throw away the bag outside. Wash EVERYTHING you can and put in the dryer. Coats, hats, bedding. Make sure you either clean combs and brushes with bleach or throw away outside and buy new ones. Sometimes you have to just throw the pillows away and buy new. Make sure no one else in the family has lice ....you could be re-infecting one another. Good luck!

Am wondering if the bedding was washed. The kids may be 're-infecting" themselves with nits that are floating about in their home.

I am a hair salon owner and I tell everyone to use the mayo thing but then you have to pick the nits out and do the mayo thing again in one week. Vinegar will loosen the nits but you still have to carefully pick them out. Please, please don't use Nix or any chemical offered at the pharmacy...it is pesticide and there has been a lot of evidence of it being cancer causing, not worth the chance in my opinion.

RE: Can't Get Rid of Lice
My sister had a similar problem. I read on this website where someone said to rinse hair in vinegar to take care of the eggs. She did that and it has worked. So what I would suggest is to treat with the Nix again to get rid of the adults and then rinse in vinegar to dissolve the eggs. That should take care of it. I had told my sister to rinse my niece's hair in vinegar every day for a week or so just to be sure.
