Puppies are naturally curious and scent-driven, which makes your kitchen trash can irresistible to them. Keep them out by pouring a scant cap full of ammonia into the can. I only had to do this a few times for my pup. He's now 46 inches tall and walks right past it, not even taking a look!

Thank u 4 this tip. Do u think this would work w/a 9yr old dog. We just acquired him from a friend. He's in retirement now & we're all in the 'gettin used 2 each other' phase. He's a very gud dog, well trained. I need 2 find a way 2 keep out of the garbage when we have leave him inside longer than we really want 2. Thank u.

It just takes one stray dog to create a big mess for you. A bungie cord securing the lid should prevent trash from spilling out if an animal tips it over. As a deterrent, fill a spray bottle with ammonia and spray the outside of the can every few days. The smell of ammonia should encourage the critter to find a nicer smelling garbage can.
Raccoons also like to get in trash cans at nighttime, as well as bears. (05/28/2005)
