Elroy Rockdale Davis

This is a picture of Elroy in his pool. He is a Golden Retriever who is about two years old now. He came from Elroy, WI.

Elroy loves toys and his pool. Every time he goes outside he has to take a toy with him. And when it is time for him to come in, he makes us wait at the door until he runs and gets his toy to bring in.

We throw heavy balls into the pool so they sink. Elroy will put his whole face under water and stay there until he gets the ball. He will do this for every ball since he doesn't want us playing in HIS pool.

Today's Tips

Defrosting Meat In The Microwave

When defrosting beef, or chicken in the microwave, use one of those plates that are used to cook bacon on (for the microwave). As you defrost the beef or chicken the juices go into the little wells and make less of a mess than a plate would make. I do this all the time and only have 1 plate to clean and no other mess in my microwave.

Uses For 4 Liter Milk Containers

Tips for reusing 4 liter milk containers. Post your ideas.

Reusing 4 Liter Milk Containers

I cut the bottoms of the 4 liter milk container. Wash it out and put them in my bathroom drawer. That way I have all my things organised in smaller sections and if any lotion or ointments spill, it stays in a smaller area that can be cleaned out.

Uses For Shoe Boxes

Ideas for reusing shoes boxes. Post your ideas.

Reusing Shoe Boxes

I collect shoe boxes to store different craft items. But to give these boxes a neater look I wrap them up with light colored wall paper samples. This gives the boxes an expensive look and at the same time makes my craft shelves look neater.

Keeping Fingerprints off Mirrored Cabinets

If you have a mirrored cabinet (such as a medicine cabinet) that requires you to touch the mirror to open it, thus leaving fingerprints, I have found that placing small vinyl clings/decals at the spot you touch eliminates the fingerprints. I like to change the vinyl clings to correspond with the seasons or holidays. You can involve your children in this, too!

Looking Through Small Items

When looking for a small nail, screw, button. pin, etc, in your can or jar of misfits and/or left-overs, be sure to dump them on newspaper, typing paper, or magazine. When finished, just lift, form in a "vee" and pour back in can or jar. Beats picking them up a few at a time.

Keeping Gift Receipts With Gifts

Stores now give "gift receipts" to enclose with purchased gifts of clothing to facilitate returns. It is very easy to misplace these receipts, so take a minute and staple the gift receipt to the tag on the garment- this worked wonderfully well for our family this Christmas.

Uses For Leftover Candy Canes

Tips for using candy canes that are leftover from Christmas. Post your ideas.

Leftover Candy Canes

I always have a lot leftover after the holidays so I came up with a few ideas.

- Dissolve in mugs of coffee or hot chocolate for a tasty drink.
- Crush & use as a topping for cakes, cupcakes, cookies, ice cream, etc

No Time to Fry Bacon EVERYTIME

When ever I have leftover bacon at breakfast, I put it in a zip lock baggie, date it and store it in the fridge. The next time you scramble eggs and don't have time to fry the bacon you just crumble it up while it's still in the baggie, microwave it for about 15 seconds and scatter it over the eggs. There you are, eggs and bacon when you're in a rush.

Saving Money on Hand Soap

Tips for saving money on hand soap. Post your ideas below!

Refilling Softsoap

When I refill the Softsoap, I don't fill the container full. I leave about 2" from the top and add water and shake well. It is not as thick, but not too runny either. It makes the soap go further. I tell my family to wash their hands for the 20 seconds so all the germs wash down the drain!

Finding Prom Dresses For Less

In need of inexpensive prom or winter formal dresses? Go to wedding stores, check the clearance rack and the samples rack (usually favoring the smaller sizes) - checking both the most casual bridal dresses AND the bridesmaid dresses. In addition, you can check your local garment district (L.A. has one downtown), thrift stores, consignment stores and the local newspapers - and stores selling quinceniera dresses (a 15th birthday party in some cultures).

Sunday Morning Sticky Buns

Ingredients:

  • 5 tablespoons packed brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons dark corn syrup
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 2 tablespoons chopped toasted pecans
  • 1 cup unbleached flour
  • 2/3 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons chilled margarine, cut into small pieces
  • 1/3 cup raisins
  • 2/3 cup skim milk

Directions:

Preheat the oven to 425°F. Coat an 8" round baking pan with nonstick spray. In a small saucepan over low heat, stir 4 tablespoons of the brown sugar, the corn syrup and water until the brown sugar dissolves and the mixture is warm. Pour the mixture into the prepared pan and sprinkle with the pecans. In a medium bowl, combine the flours, baking powder and 1/2 teaspoon of the cinnamon. With a pastry blender, cut in the margarine until the mixture resembles coarse meal. Add the raisins and milk, and stir just until moistened. Turn out the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead it 10 times. Roll the dough into an 8X10" rectangle. Sprinkle the rectangle with the remaining 1 tablespoon of brown sugar and the remaining 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon. Starting from a long side of the rectangle, roll up the dough into a cylinder. Cut the cylinder into 1-inch slices. Place the slices, cut side down, into the prepared pan. Bake until the buns are golden brown, 12 to 15 minutes. Place cut side up onto a serving plate. Serve warm. Makes 10 buns.

Kosher Romanian Bean Soup

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups dried lima beans
  • 8 cups cold water
  • 1 large onion, roughly chopped
  • 1 carrot, peeled and quartered
  • 2 cloves garlic, crushed
  • 1 vegetable bouillon cube
  • 2 tablespoons corn oil
  • 1 medium onion, finely diced
  • 2 teaspoons kosher salt (optional)
  • Fresh ground black pepper to taste

Directions:

Soak lima beans in cold water overnight. Drain the lima beans and rinse in several changes of water to float away as many loosened shells as possible. Place in crockpot with 8 cups fresh water, the chopped onion, carrot, garlic and bouillon cube. Cover tightly and cook 18-24 hours, until beans are very tender. Remove from heat and let cool a little.

In the meantime, heat the oil in a skillet and saute the finely diced onion until it is very brown. Ladle a small amount of soup at a time into blender or bowl of a food processor and puree until all soup is pureed. Return to pot and stir in browned onions. Taste for seasoning and add salt and pepper to taste. Makes 8 to 10 servings. Freezes well

Rewiring a Fluorescent Fixture

A 4 tube fluorescent fixture was previously wired for for operation from two switches in different locations via 4 wire cable, blk , wht, red with bare ground wire. The fixture uses two ballasts with 8 wires each Two red, two blue, two yellow, one black and one white. The reds, blues and yellows in each ballast are paired together with a wire nut on each pair. The white wires from each ballast are twisted in a wire nut.

The problem comes with the black wires. The black wire from one ballast is connected the black line wire. The black wire from the second ballast is connected to the red wire. I don't need the red wire because I only need access from one source so what do I do with the second black wire? I've installed a three wire plug on the power cable not using the red wire. Only one pair of bulbs work. Taking the black wire from the red wire and connecting it to the black wire shorts out circuit. Incidently, only one ballast is grounded. Can that be the problem?

Badly Burnt Foreman Grill

What to do? I lent my daughter in law my Foreman Grill and I think she thought it was self cleaning, or was just too lazy. When she returned it, it looks worse then a outside grill. And she wonders why I don't go to her house for dinner. I have tried cleaning it with orange cleaner, vinegar and baking soda. I know I should not use chemicals on it. But, I don't want to buy a new one. Any suggestions. Rita

Buttery Popcorn Oil Stain

I was making popcorn with a theater type popcorn maker at my daughter's school and got the buttery popcorn oil on a navy blue sweatshirt I had borrowed from my daughter. I sprayed it with 409 and washed it. I was unable to see if the stain had come out before I put it in the dryer so went ahead and dried it. Now I find the stains are still there. Is it too late? Help!

Washing Machine Help! Cold Water Overflows The Machine And It Won't Run The Rinse Cycle.

I was hoping that someone will be able to help me with a problem that I'm experiencing with my washing machine.

First when the cold water is turned on in the back of the machine it continues to drip into the machine until it overflows. So I turn the valve off and only use the hot water.

Second when I wash a load of clothes the machine will go through all of the cycles except the rinse cycle. I have to go and advance it to the spin cycle by hand.

The machine is only 3 years old, but is no longer under warrenty. I've called several places that repairs washing machines but they wont give any advice over the phone. And they say that to just come out and look at it will cost $80.00. That does not include any repairs that needs to be made to the machine.

If anyone can help me out, I would appreciate it.

Thanks,

Terry
