Today's Tips

Tip for Saving Buttons

If you plan on making a shirt that has buttons on it into a rag, be sure to the take buttons off. Buttons serve no purpose on a rag and you can use the buttons for something else. Once you have taken all the buttons off, sew them all together so that you will have a matching set. This is much better than tossing them into a jar and having to sift through buttons for a matching set.

Organizing Your Cross-Top Freezer

Wire baskets 10 x 14 inches sold at stores like Staples for desktop IN and Out baskets are great organizers in your cross-top freezer. Using Mason Jars that are vacuumed with Food Saver attachment for a one meal snack, are easy to access by storing in the wire basket.

Preventing Tomato Stains in Plastic Ware

To prevent tomato based stains on your plastic ware, spray the inside of each container with cooking spray before putting the tomato dish in it. Upon washing the dish, it will be good as new and no stain!

Skin-So-Soft on Shower Doors

I use Avon's skin-so-soft in a spray bottle on my glass shower doors. Spray on doors and wipe off with a paper towel, your doors will be clean and the bathroom will have that fresh scent of skin-so-soft, repeat about once a week.

Prevent Pasta From Sticking with Cooking Spray

When cooking any pasta product I spray the water in the cooking pot before heating with the spray cooking oil. This puts a bit of oil in the water and prevents the pasta from sticking together. Much easier than trying to get just a drop or two out of the big oil bottles.

Easy to Remember Password

Not necessarily a "thrifty" tip, but a time/trouble saving. If you're need a security code word or password you can use a phone number of a friend or family member that's ingrained in your long-term memory, along with their initials. If you're likely to need a reminder, simply tape their name, or relationship (i.e. "Grandma") near your puter. : )

A use for liquid Tide containers

This past week I volunteered at my daughters' Girl Scout day camp. They had taken empty liquid Tide laundry detergent containers, the big ones with the spouts, and cleaned them out and refilled them with water. They then took a nylon stocking and placed a bar of soap in it and tied that to the spout. This was used as a handwashing station. This would be excellent to take camping, fishing, hunting, picnic, or just out in the backyard for cleaning up from yard work or in the garage from working on your car.

Featured Feedback: RE: Getting Started Saving Money

One painless way is to round out your check book. Say you have to write a check for $5.54 - just enter $6.00. Do this for each check written and by the end of the month you will have saved some $ after reconcilling your checkbook.

Featured Feedback: RE: Looking for Sun Burn Relief

We use vinegar when someone in the family gets a bad sunburn. It takes the heat away and if you get it in time it usually does not blister. Just dab it on don't rub it.

Today's Recipe: Stewed Rhubarb with Strawberries & Apples

Ingredients

  • 1 orange
  • 1 lb fresh or frozen rhubarb (500 g)
  • 1 large apple
  • 1 cup water (250 ml)
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar (50 ml)
  • 2 cups fresh strawberries (500 ml)

Grate rind & squeeze juice from orange. Cut rhubarb into 1" (2.5 cm) lengths. Peel, core & thinly slice apple.

Put orange rind, juice, rhubarb, apple, water & sugar in pan. Cover & bring to boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes or until fruit is tender. Stir occasionally. Remove from heat & add strawberries. Add more sugar if you don't think it's sweet enough - brown sugar is good.

Can be served warm or cold. Delicious alone or serve with ice cream or yogurt.

Recipe for Elephant Ears

I am from up North (MN) and have been living in TX for over 20 years. In all this time I have never seen any Elephant Ears anywhere. They might be called something else where you come from. They are round about 5 or so inches across, very thin and are sprinkled with cinnamon and brown sugar. They are so crispy and flakey that it is impossible to eat one without making a mess but I absolutely love them. Has anyone have the recipe for these? I would love to have it. Thanx!

How to Grow Annuals

"Annual plants complete their lifecycle in a single season. You usually plant seed in spring or early summer (or purchase plants started in a greenhouse). The plants grow and flower through summer and die in the fall. Unlike perennials, this year's plants will not regrow from overwintered roots next spring, though sometimes seeds produced by annuals will sprout and grow the following year ("self-seeding")."
