Arizona Cactus
I was taking a picture of this cactus between Camp Verde and Payson in Arizona. The best side of the cactus required that I was on the sunny side of it. Usually I try to avoid including my shadow, but in this instance it made the picture quite hilarious, and, in my opinion, a better picture than if I had zoomed in on just the cactus.

Bird Feeder, Bird House Made With Recycled Juice Containers
I made this bird feeder from a juicy juice container. The directions are on their website http://www.verybestkids.com. All I did was cut out the holes in the side (hot glue around the sharp edges) and some holes for the string (nylon) and the dowel rods. Paint it with acrylic paints that are waterproof.
I've had it outside now for a few weeks and needless to say, its a bird house now. A few days ago a bird started to build a nest in it. It seems to enjoy the bright colored paint on the outside. Hopefully we'll have babies soon!
I'm glad the birds enjoy it. I save all of my juice jugs now and make either feeders or houses - whatever the bird chooses. lol

Today's Tips
Cleaning Mold In The Bathtub
The cheapest and best way to get rid of mold in the bathtub area is to mix bleach and water in a spray bottle. Spray and walk away! Turn on the fan in the bathroom or open a window for an hour or so. You can rinse if you like, but you don't have to.

Saving Money on SOS Pads
Tips for saving money on SOS pads. Post your ideas.
Stretching S.O.S. Pads
Whenever I purchase a box of S.O.S Pads, I immediately take a pair of scissors and cut each pad into halves. After years of having to throw away rusted, unused and smelly pads, I finally decided that this would be much more economical. And now a box of S.O.S pads last me indefinitely! In fact, I have noticed that the scissors get sharpened this way!

Vitamin E for Sun and Wind Burns
I recently got a terrible sunburn/windburn while at an all day air show. I was blistered and swollen, it was so bad. I've found THE cure for the worst of sunburns - Solarcaine sunburn pain for the pain plus an anti-inflammatory.
But this is KEY: Vitamin E Oil. It heals very quickly and painlessly, it doesn't sting even when applied over raw skin. Start by applying every 1/2 hour, and you will see an immediate difference. This was a huge blessing for me! You can buy the Walgreens brand which is what I got for only 2.99 (it should be with the creams/balms/lotions.) The bottle is small but a little goes a long way. My bottle is still almost completely full. Trust me this WORKS!

Fabric Storage Tips
Tips for storing and organizing fabric for crafts. Post your ideas.
Storing Extra Fabric (Material)
I use and save lots of material. I purchased from the Dollar store the sweater bags or under the bed bags for my fabric. They are clear and cheap. I can store the material anywhere and see what I have.

Make Patterns With Exam Table Paper
I begged my MD for a roll of paper (from the exam table) to use to trace my patterns. I then mark them with the # and size and put the new pattern, the original and instructions in a plastic ziploc bag. They are easy to use and store and I can make the different sizes.

Tips from a Cashier
I work as a cashier at a very large and popular retail store. Opposed to what some might think, it can be a difficult job. Help us keep our sanity by considering these tips:
1. We are human. Say hello if we say hello. Don't just ignore us.
2. USE A BAR TO SEPARATE ORDERS! We can't read minds. We don't know when your order starts or ends.
3. Don't come in with lots of kids and buy lots of stuff and expect us to help you out with it or unpack it from your buggy.
4. We don't give out gift boxes. This isn't Sears.
5. Time to time we HAVE to ask if you would like to "donate to" on your bill. If you don't want to, just say no. Don't yell and scream at me about how everyone is after your money. I have to ask.
6. Yes, I do need a barcode. The price of the object isn't good enough. Either check to made sure your items have them, or be patient when I have to call for them. I don't like it anymore than you.
7. If we ask for your postal code (or zip code), it is for marketing research, and again, we HAVE to ask. Don't get snippy - I'm not going to come and rob you, and it's not a big conspiracy.
8. The answer to how are you is "good" or "ok". I really don't want to know about your need for these laxatives, condoms or anything else you are purchasing.
9. It is never ok to throw anything at a cashier - credit card, money or items.
10. If you recognize me shopping when I'm not working please don't ask me for help.
Thanks, just needed to vent after a stressful day.

Organizing Recycling Items
Organizing items, like newspapers, bottles and cans, that you plan to recycle. Post your ideas.
Keep your recycling container right beside your garbage can in the kitchen. I was leaving mine by the porch and it was just too easy to throw things into the garbage. I use a small bathroom size garbage can that I empty daily into the recycling bin.

Homemade Duvet Covers
Duvet covers can be very expensive in the dept. or linen store. I make my own using flat sheets from the discount store ($15 rather than $40 or more.) I sew the sheets together, wrong side out on 3 sides, add use velcro or buttons on the 4th side. The sheet selection is always better than the duvet cover selection - and you can put two different patterns/colors on either side to make it reversible.

When new to the area and cleaning off your property. Low Season vs High Season
The best time to vacation is when it's 'low season'. High season is when it's really busy (more crowded) and things will be higher priced. Also, remember, weekends will be higher priced than weekdays, whether you're thinking air fares, motel rooms, eats, or car rentals.

Beware of shopping at price clubs or shopping clubs. We got a membership last year and I don't think that I saved enough to justify it. Watch your unit prices there as well. After my Grandmother and Grandfather passed away, my Aunt Linda took some of their old coats and made bears out of them. She attached some beads and made some pretty necklaces for the female bears so they would resemble my Grandparents.
She made a pair for all of her sisters and brothers, which my mom and her are sisters. I know it meant alot to my mom and it even means alot to me. I wasn't sure where to post this, so I thought of posting it under here. I thought it might be a good idea.

A Mother's Day Surprise For a New Grandma
A great way to tell a Mom that she is a Grandma-to-be is to show up at her house on mother's day. For example, if you found out you're pregnant before Mother's Day, show up with a cake saying the name of all the mother's in the house... and then yours.
My fiancee and I are getting married this summer and want a baby so if I was to be pregnant now, I would get a cake that says the name of his mother, her sisters who have kids and their mother and in the end write: ....oh and Erica too! They will all be shocked! I will love to do that, maybe next year.

Recipe For A Happy Marriage
Recipe for a Happy Marriage: To an overflowing cup of love, add faith in God and faith in each other. These ingredients will help dissolve bitterness or misunderstanding. Never let bitter spirits brew overnight. Sweeten with laughter and understanding. Prayer is necessary to hold these ingredients together and should be added daily. Tears may also be added when necessary, and sifted together with respect and hard work towards a common dream. Sprinkle generously with hugs and kisses. Keep this fresh by stirring 24 hours a day. Serve with a loving heart. YEILDS: One happy Husband.
I wrote this to my niece for her Wedding Shower, many years ago.

Drying Couch Cusions
About a week ago we came across a free sectional sofa! After shampooing the couch and soaking the cushions with Oxt Clean it's almost like new. However, I have had the cushions out on the porch drying for about 3 days now and the "core" of the cushions are still wet. Any suggestions on how to get them to dry faster? I'm afraid that they will get mildew inside them. Can they be put in the dryer?
Any suggestions would be great!

Can I Purchase Bats?
O.K., some people may think me daft or more accurately "bats". I live in an area of Colorado, right near a river in the mountains, where there should be bats. However, neither my wife nor I have seen a bat the four years we have lived here. Our neighbors say they have seen some in the past, but have not seen them for a long time now.
Knowing that bats are excellent exterminators of mosquitoes, I would like to introduce them back into the area around our neghborhood. Now, my question is this: Can I purchase bats? And if so, where can I go to purchase them?

Dealing With An Abusive Husband
I need some advice. My marriage of 17 years is falling apart. I cannot afford to live on my own yet. In May of 2006 I will graduate with my BA in social work and should be able to live alone.
Everything is fine until my husband drinks 6 to 10 beers in an hour-he fusses until I start to fight with him - then he blames me for the fight. He knows I will not back down from a fight - he will not stop his nightly drinking. I have to be with him unitl I graduate, do you have any suggestions for me?
I have a small savings account in my daughter's name. I cannot lock myself away because I am afirad he will knock down the door. He is not threat to my daughter. She lives with her father.
He is not prone to violence. He knows I have a temper and might act out. I think he enjoys making me angry. I just need to get through the next year without anymore emotiional scars.

Cat Peeing In The Same Spot
I have just adopted my first kitten. I've had him for 4 months now. (he's now 9 months) He is a very kind, loving cat. He loves people and he's what you would call an in-your-face cat. He has to be as close as possible. But just yesterday, he peed outside his litter box.
It's happened a few times before, where he has peed outside of his litter box, but never in the same place twice (at least, not that I know of). Once on the bed, once next to his litter box, and once in a closet. (the portable closet I received from a friend who also had a cat). They were all incidences that were about a week or two apart, but I chalked them up to the training period of having a new cat and teaching them to use the box.
However, just recently, he has picked a spot between my wall and the couch, right behind a plant and my cd-player, to pee. He's done it twice now. Yesterday and now today. I cleaned the spot today, first with baking soda to get the pee out and second with the vinegar and bleach combination. He's been using his litter box (both of them) for a couple of months now with no problems and all of a sudden, he's peeing out side of his box.
I alway keep them clean, in fact, I clean them twice a day. They never get more than 1/4 full. Not to mention, that his boxes are in the lower level bathroom that is rarely used, so it's not due to high traffic. In fact, he peed in the higher traffic area, in the living room, where he sun-bathes.
I have a dog, but they get along fine. Could this be due to illness, or am I just dealing with a behavioral issue? Please help!

Lawn Mower Starter Rope Stuck
Craftsman 6.0 horsepower 22" side discharge lawn mower won't start: The starter rope simply makes half a turn only. It sounds (metal touching sound at half turn) like something blocking the starter rope from turnning in the flyweel.
The manual suggests this could be "Engine flyweel brake is on when control bar is released". And I followed its suggested solution, "Depress control bar to upper handle before pulling starter rope."
But it doesn't work at all. Note: the mower was fine and it refused to allow its starter rope to be pulled again after the engine automatically stopped while mowing. Please help.

Helping a Friend Deal With Adversity
A good friend has recently found out that her teenage son has a serious non-curable but non-fatal disease. He has recently had 2 surgeries and may face more in the future. The future will certainly require more hospital stays for tests and treatments.
Her husband works for a small company and their insurance is not good. She is already dealing will the insurance refusing charges so she is under a great deal of stress. My question... If you have been her in position, how do I best help?
My offers of meals have not been accepted, I don't want to show up with food since he probably has a restricted diet and her other kids are rather picky. I have offered to sit with her at the hospital to wait during surgery/tests but she hasn't called. I don't want to push myself on her but do want to be a thoughtful friend. I know as this goes on she may ask for my help but do you know of something that would be very helpful that I could do without her asking?
Thanks.

Controlling Bedbugs
Bed bugs are pests of domestic animals, bats, wild birds, and man. Climex lectularius is the only species in the north temperate regions that attacks man. Bed bugs are most commonly found in old hotels and boarding houses, but you can also find them in homes, apartments, restaurants, theaters, buses and offices. They are nocturnal insects, feeding at night and hiding in dark places during the day. Bed bugs feed only on blood, principally that of man. The period required to obtain a meal is anywhere from 3 to 15 minutes. Bed bugs are oval, flattened, wingless, and red-brown in color. Those full of blood are red and slightly elongated. The adult is 1/4 to 3/8 inches long.
