"Pup" Tent For Dog Shelter

I have always worried about my dogs being left outside with no shelter from the cold or rain if I have to depend on someone else to let them in and out if I have to be away (in the hospital for example). So I came up with this idea.

I have a "pup" tent that I had gotten at Wal-Mart for $24 several years ago and is no longer being used. We also have several tarps not being used. I set the tent up, but then realized that since I'd have to leave the door unzipped on it so the dogs could get in and out, the rain could also get in. So out comes a tarp!

I tied the tarp over the top of the tent. Then I built a brace at the front of the tarp about 3 feet from the front of the tent. I attached the tarp to the brace, and also attached it to the deck on all 3 of the other sides. The tarp keeps the tent from blowing away in strong winds. And it also keeps the rain out.

I took some old bed pillows that were scheduled to be trashed and sewed them together, then made a cover for it and this became a nice bed in there for my dogs.

To convince the dogs to go inside and check it out, I simply tempted them each with a rawhide bone and then tossed the bone inside. They went right in and retrieved their bones. Since then they have gone in it several times on their own to check it out.

Now if my pet sitter doesn't bring them in when it rains, I don't have to worry. Takes a huge weight off the shoulders of this over-protective doggy mama!

Wildlife: Royal Terns (Florida)

I hadn't been to the ocean in about forty years! It was on my "bucket list" to go again. I finally made it last February. This photo was taken in Florida. These birds are Royal Terns. Aren't they gorgeous?

Craft: Beach Windchime

I have collected so much stuff from the beach, finally I put it to use. I hot glue gunned two pieces of beach glass, shells and rocks to string, then tied one end to a piece of wood (stick), then took a piece of ribbon and tied it to the end of the stick. I have done all beach glass, all shells, all stones. They sound so relaxing when they chime.

Dobey (Golden Retriever)

Dobey is 3 years old, and a Golden Retriever. I was at the end of my pregnancy and my Aunt's dog had puppies. I swore I would never get a puppy but I felt it would be the right thing for my child to have growing up! Thank goodness I got him, he now has a daughter (my daughter - seen in this photo ) He likes to sit on the front porch and watch us feed our friend, the chipmunk. He enjoys running through the sprinkler and playing with water balloons with my daughter ("his daughter").

When my daughter was learning to go up and down the stairs alone, he would push his nose under her butt to make sure she would not fall back. If she was coming down the stairs, he stood in front of her. He is the pup that everyone needs around. He is like another father to my child. Always by her side and always there to protect her. As you can see in this photo, she climbed on the char to watch the chipmunk. He needed to be there at her side.

Peanut (Miniature Schnauzer) and Ma Chat (Ragdoll)

This is Peanut, a 13 year old Miniature Schnauzer, and Ma Chat, a 6 year old Blue-Point Mitted Ragdoll Cat. They both came from breeders when babies.

Peanut likes to play sock, and play with children, cats, and other dogs. Ma Chat likes to purr, sleep, and snuggle. She also loves cat nip.

This is an old photo. I wanted to enter it in memory of Peanut, our Miniature Schnauzer. Peanut died of Pancreatic Cancer two weeks ago. She was a wonderful pet. My children dressed her up in doll clothes even and she liked to be pulled around in the wagon. We miss her very miss. This photo shows how sweet she was.

Today's Tips:

Olive Oil for Sensitive, Dry Skin

I have really dry skin, and have tried many types of lotions to help. Most lotions that I used ended up leaving my skin slippery, which might leave a residue on fabrics I'm working with or get in the way of my work. They also didn't help my skin at all, they just kinda...sat there.

I've heard of Olive Oil being a good moisturizer for hair, so I thought I'd try it on my skin. It works amazingly well! It rubs in, even on my really dry hands, without making them oily (soaks in quickly)--so in a few minutes I'm free to go about my day. It also seems to help the skin heal itself.

I added some spearmint to a small coffee cup of olive oil and put it in the microwave for 10 seconds or so (to release the mint oil). It makes the oil a little scented, and also (since it is spearmint) acts as a mild astringent with the moisturizing oil.

Pretty inexpensive, and I'm sure you could add other scents as desired. I keep a coffee cup in the bathroom for frequent use. I would highly recommend trying this for anyone, but especially for people with sensitive, dry skin, and even with eczema (i have it on my hands and it helps a LOT).

Use a Covered Bucket as a Camping Toilet

This idea is for a camping or emergencies. If you have need of a toilet when there isn't one around or there is no running water, you can improvise one by using a covered plastic bucket (recycled soy sauce ones are great), and urinating into the bucket, which you then close and later empty into a nearby facility or chemical toilet.

If it's solid waste, just put a plastic bag from the grocery store over the top of the bucket and eliminate into that, then tie up bag and double bag and throw away. (Using plastic bags for elimination in Africa, is, I understand, called a "flying toilet"!)

Also, males can always just pee into jars that can be closed! Just empty, rinse with water and spray with disinfectant to keep containers clean.

Beware Of Alcohol Poisoning from Use of Hand Sanitizers

This tip is regarding the use of alcohol based hand sanitizer. Some have labels saying "Keep out of reach of children" Be very, very careful if using this near children. If a child uses this on their hands and then licks their hands they can get very sick and, in some cases, alcohol poisoning! Go to www.snopes.com and type in alcohol sanitizer danger or use this link

There are true stories of children getting very sick from this.

Use Clip-on Earrings as Accessories

Just because money is tight doesn't mean you can't be "hip"! I had been admiring the cute costume rings that are all the rage right now, but no way was I going to spend money to buy one. So I thought and I thought...and guess what I found? Those clip on earrings I have laying around (some with matches, some without) make great rings!

Just clip one over a plain old band, even a cheap one, and you have a great piece of costume jewelry. Use a large one for a great fashion statement - plus you can change it as the mood suits. I also use them as clip ons to add flair to my flats (or heels if you can walk in them:), and as curtain tiebacks. I love anything vintage and you can find clip ons at any thrift shop for a steal!

Keeping Diaper Smell Out Of Your House

If have a baby, you have dirty diapers that can smell quite bad. My daughter had two in diapers at once and you never smelled dirty diapers in her house or trash.

Use plastic grocery bags. Put the diaper in the corner and twist. Pull the excess up and around and twist again, and repeat! You can do it up to 3 times then tie the bag. It's the same as having it in 3 bags, no smell

Saving Money At College

I am back in college after a bad illness at age 35, and my husband ditched me, so pickings are slim. I have a few suggestions to stretch those dollars, which are very few these days.

How to do college cheaper:

  1. Pack your lunch, most community colleges charge a lot of money for food and drink. Buy an insulated lunch bag and use it for snacks and water. (Refill water bottle at fountains, but bleach bottles after a day or two to prevent listeria or any other bacteria!)

  2. Books-find used online or at school book swaps. Sometimes old editions still work, the very few differences can usually be made up with in-library copies (Most schools keep some on hand).

  3. Carpool, if your school charges for parking, try and find a buddy to drive every other week or whatever. Even short trips add up in gas, which isn't so cheap at the moment.

  4. When at all possible, e-mail assignments or check if colleges have print allowances-most do, and ink seems to run out all the time. Also see if your ID can be loaded with money-some schools deduct from the price if it does. (My parking is cut in half, and my food is cut by 5%)

  5. Don't lose tuition/financial aid/scholarships. If you don't get it, get a tutor, right away. Most schools offer some free tutoring, or have labs with people to help you.

  6. Look for scholarships, most of the money never gets applied for, and it can really help. All kinds are available, and you don't need straight A's to get them, as is thought by many.

  7. Save all of your work, because it often applies in other classes in one way or another. If you can't sell books outside your major, use them for future references. Save books on your major-they will also be great references that are scholarly, and will help you in the future.

  8. Ask the phone company about student or low income discounts (I pay for $20/month for higher speed than my college has!). Ask all of your service providers, even the gas and electric companies may make exceptions. Too many people overpay for necessary expenses.

  9. Check out the dollar stores for supplies, from pens to poster board. Buy rolling bags and toes at the thrift store.

  10. Carry a small emergency kit of aspirin or Tylenol, antacid, Imodium, tissues and safety pins-the kind of things that you get gouged for in your purse or book bag. It's really expensive to buy lip balm or headache medicine in a book store.

  11. If you are already employed and want to further your education, see if your employer will pay for your tuition. A lot of places will-and a lot of businesses offer employee scholarships.

  12. Finally, if you get good grades, and you have down time on a non-residential campus, see if your school needs student tutors. The pay is not great, but you get paid for your spare time and not spend money killing time in the cafeteria or coffee shop.

I had to adjust to a lot less income, and these are some of the ways I was able to do it. This list applies mostly to adult students, but with economy the way it is, there are more of them. Most also apply to students of all ages. Don't get too far into debt before you get a good career, and good luck!

Recycling Newspaper Throughout The House

Besides reading the newspaper, I find many uses for it around the house.

  • Whenever we put a new trash bag in our kitchen trash can, we put a layer of the paper at the bottom. This will absorb any liquids that sometimes leak.

  • To prevent trash odor in trash cans, I add a layer of newspaper as the trash fills. This is helpful when the trash is not quite full to empty out.

  • When I peel hard boiled eggs or produce, I dry out the sink and line with a layer of newspaper. When the job is done, I gather up the paper, close it up and throw away. This will contain the odor for a short time.

  • When I want to remove odors from containers, I use crumbled newspaper. Put the paper in the container with a tight lid. Leave it sealed for a few days. For large items, using a large trash bag, add the item and place sections of newspaper inside; tightly seal. After a few days, if the odor still remains, change the newspaper. There's no recipe for the amount of newspaper to use. I usually add according to the size of the object and the strength of the odor.

  • Use it to wrap a gift. Get creative with some ribbon or other decorations to jazz it up. The comics make a colorful wrap.

  • To have some indoor fun on a rainy day, and if the house rules permit. Ball up some newspaper and let the kids bat it around or have a "snowball" fight.

  • I never have any problems with the ink coming off onto my hands as long as my hands are dry.

Newspapers have so many other uses. I always keep some on hand for whenever I need it.

Clean Hair Bows With Dish Soap

My daughter wears bows in her hair and they are always getting dirty. Instead of spending $5-$10 to replace the dirty bows, I used a small brush and Dawn dishwashing liquid and scrubbed the bows clean. I placed them in a window that gets lots of sun so they will dry quickly and will be ready to wear in no time. They look brand new! I figured I saved at least $35 or more and the bows look brand new.

Gift Card Budgeting

This one works great! Hubby pointed out that he saw big fluctuations from month to month on our grocery spending. I've decided that $400 should be enough for a month of groceries.

On the first of each month, I go to my favorite grocery store and purchase a gift card for $300. I also buy gift cards for other stores (pharmacy, Target, Walmart) which will equal $100. So at the end of the month the tally should only be $400.

Take out any credit cards or checks from your purse/wallet and only have the gift card as an option to spend money. This forces you to only spend as much as the amount on the gift card. You could also divide your gift cards so the amount is what you need on a weekly basis and only take "this week's card.

If you think you may over spend or go to a store that you haven't bought a gift card, write ONE check, and put in the To: section the Store/Vendor name. That will limit you from wandering into different stores and buying impulsively. Leave all other checks and gift cards at home.

It works because you cannot spend over your budget and you can't buy anything from another store impulsively. If you must have a certain thing from a certain store, put one check in your wallet with the name of the store already filled out. If you have only gift card, you must add up the cost of the groceries or perhaps "put things back". I usually count, rounding most prices "up" instead of down. Not having enough $ at the register might be make you feel embarrassed so you will probably stick to your list.

This can be used for gasoline or other specialty stores. Most stores have some type of gift card available.

Use Salt Scrub to Clean a Bathtub

You can use salt scrub that you use on your skin also to clean your shower or tub. I take a scrub brush and put a heaping tablespoon across the bottom. Then I spray water around the tub with the showerhead to make the tub damp. Then I scrub the tub with the salt mixture and the tub comes clean of dirt and mildew with not much effort at all. It is safer for the environment compared to Comet, which doesn't always get the stubborn stains out. Also this is cheaper since you can make it at home from a recipe you find on this site.

Dear Webby's Joke of the Day

A missionary discovered a tribe of Indians who had never recorded a baptism, confirmation or marriage. The bishop soon rectified the situation by baptizing and confirming everyone. He also married every beaming couple that walked by.

Later, the tribal chief told the Bishop the tribe had never had so much fun. The bishop asked the chief which part they enjoyed the most. "The marriage service," the chief said, smiling. "We all got new wives!"

Getting Whites White

I live in New Zealand so I don't have as much access to products as the rest of the world. How do I get my whites, white? They accumulate grease stains, food stains, and sweat stains. I've tried bleach and soaking and the prehistoric cleaning method as well (the one with the wooden board) and still the stains stay there.

Just putting it through the wash gets it cleaner than all the other methods but not as white as I want. That's why I'm asking you guys for help. I am particular about getting it white because I am the supervisor in the kitchen so I have to set an example you know. So how can I get my whites as white as possible?

Clothing is Bleeding onto Itself

I bought a beautiful black and white 97% cotton, 3% spandex dress. It has a shell that is polyester. It is Dry Clean Only. However, because in the past I have taken items (black and white) to the cleaners and the white usually comes back dingy, I decided to take the chance and wash it in cold water, gentle cycle and hang dry.

I can't tell whether there is any shrinkage, but just noticed that near the seams for the big pleats, there is a little bleeding of the black onto the white. Is there something that I can do?

Yorkie With Hair Loss

I found my 2 year old Yorkie at my door step several months back. She was infested with ticks and fleas. I got her cleaned up, but about a month ago she got some hairless spots on her back. I was thinking that it could be hot spots or mange.

This black hair looks like it is spreading. It started as 3 round bald spots, to having this black hair from neck to tail. If any one knows what this could be, can you let me know?

Spending Lists
By Kelly Ann Butterbaugh

When it comes to our finances, they're very abstract. Check cards and electronic bill paying don't make it much easier; the concept of exactly how much money is spent is a difficult one to grasp. In the days of cash, it was much easier to understand where our money went. We started the weekend with a bulging wallet and ended with a slim billfold. We could actually see our money disappearing. However, it's impractical to pay this way today, yet it's hard to see the money disappear when there isn't any tangible money changing hands. Here rises the often asked question, "Where does all my money go?" To better answer this question, try to make your spending concrete by making a list.
