Shampoo Ingredients Can Cause Hair Thinning

contest winner icon
When choosing your next bottle of shampoo, check the ingredients for SLS (sodium laurel sulfate) or SLES (sodium laurel ether sulfate). These are very common detergents added to many personal care products like shampoo, soap, even toothpaste. They can cause scalp irritation and thinning of the hair. I know a few people with thinning hair - including myself - and was very surprised to find this out.

Good tip, Copasetic :-) The reason SLS can cause this problem is because people don't rinse their scalp thoroughly/completely after shampooing. Hence the detergent residue remains on the scalp causing not only a drying effect in general but also can smother/block the hair follicles. It's sort of like how makeup applied to skin can clog skin pores when not washed off properly.
