Scruffy's Birthday (Terrier Mix)

Scruffy is a 2 year old terrier mix. We got her at the San Diego County Animal Shelter in June, 2005.

Scruffy is very friendly and loves to socialize at the park, wrestle with our big dog Barkley, or just curl up on my lap while I watch T.V.

We have a tradition of celebrating our dog's birthdays with meat-loaf, when they roll around each year. Scruffy's 2nd birthday was January 21st. Here's a photo of her (the small tan one,) with my son D.J., and our 8 year old pointer-mix pup Barkley, waiting for a slice of "cake."

Today's Tips:

Retrieving Clothes that Have Fallen

We live in buildings on the tenth floor, we have to dry wet clothes on the balcony. We do clip them, so that they do not fall down, but some times they do. Then they are stuck on any of the parapets below. So to retrieve them back, I have attached a fish hook to a long string. I have been able to retrieve my extra large curtain (which had fallen off) with that.

The feeling was great

Emergency Hemming With Staples

I bought a last minute pair of thrift shop jeans when I found I went off for a weekend without them. New $5 - good deal. But they were too long and I didn't have needle and thread with me. My crafty husband suggested I staple the hems up and you know, the silver color of the staple doesn't really show against the jeans much at all. I'll do that again.

Marking the Cap of Prescriptions

After I bring home a prescription medicine, I use a marker pen to write on the cap, the name of the pill and how many to take (ex: motrin, 3x's a day.) I keep the meds all in a zip lock bag all ready to grab and go if necessary. Like when going to the doctor's office or leaving town for the week-end, etc.

Red Pepper as a Pest Deterrent

Sprinkle red pepper around your plants and the cats, squirrels, mice, etc. won't go near them.

Easy Clean Up Of Dropped Egg

As everyone well knows, it is almost impossible to clean up an egg that has dropped to the floor and broken. I heard this tip on TV once and then next time I dropped an egg I tried it and it actually worked. The tip: When you drop an egg on the floor, first pick up as much of the shell as you can, then sprinkle a generous amount of salt over the egg, totally covering it and let it set for a bit, usually ten minutes or so and then go back and wipe up with paper towel. Be sure that the egg is totally covered so as to help congeal it, otherwise you will still be left with some of the egg on the floor.

I.D. Theft Insurance

Be sure to have ID theft insurance. With some insurance companies you can even add it on to your homeowners policy for a small fee.

By Tina from Harrodsburg, KY

Editor's Note: There are some people that discourage buying this additional insurance, saying that it is not cost effective and not really insurance. Here's an article from Forbes.com:

"Identity theft insurance is the fastest-growing insurance product to come along in years, according to the Insurance Information Institute. But it's not really insurance and can increase the risk of becoming a victim by creating a false sense of security. Also, the apparent low cost of $25 to $60 for a policy actually isn't a good value relative to the risk."

Free File Program through the IRS

The Free File program is a free (U.S.) federal tax preparation and electronic filing program for eligible taxpayers developed through a partnership between the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and the Free File Alliance LLC, a group of private sector tax software companies.

Since Free File's debut in 2003, more than 15.4 million returns have been prepared and e-filed through the program. Free File allows taxpayers with an Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) of $52,000 or less in 2006 to e-file their federal tax returns for free. That means 70 percent of all taxpayers - 95 million taxpayers can take advantage of the Free File program.

My First Recipe: Fried Chicken For The Minister

My First Recipe: Mother was away and Dad and I invited our Presbyterian minister to dinner. (What were we thinking?) I had helped Mother in the kitchen, but had never prepared dinner on my own. I used one of her cookbooks and fried chicken and mashed the potatoes. I did not use a cookbook when I cooked the fresh lima beans (big mistake). Everything came out fine except the beans. I had boiled them for a reasonable length of time (with the pot lid off!), but when I served them, I found they were hard as rocks--and about as tasty. The two men smiled and complimented me, but I remember they sort of pushed around the beans. I was about 15 and mortified! (Had a crush on the good-looking minister, which added to my chagrin!) Later found out the beans take quite a while to cook--and do put the top on. I'm now 76 and recall this as yesterday.

How To Select And Store Asparagus

Choose firm straight stalks with firm tips. Avoid stalks that are too thin (1/8 inch) or thick (1/2 in). Wrap the base of stalk with wet paper towels and place into a tight container.

Emergency Waterproof Shoes

If you don't have waterproof shoes and you want to go out this winter and have dry feet, simply slip on a plastic bag over socks before putting on your shoes or boots. One gallon freezer bags are good for this.

Active Ingredient in Advanage Wonder Cleaner

I have used US Advanage Wonder Cleaner in the past and it works like no other, but it is quite expensive and I am really into making my own products if at all possible. This product works so well however that I'm wondering if I can even duplicate it. Anybody know what is in this Wonder Cleaner?

The Basics of Plant Pollination
By Ellen Brown

Many of the more mysterious problems that come up during the gardening season can be traced to the pollination process going awry. Crops look healthy but fail to produce fruit, flowers fail to set seed, and yet there are no observable signs of insect damage or disease. Then there's the bizarre-shaped vegetable or odd-colored flower that suddenly springs out of nowhere. If any of these scenarios sound familiar, you may have experienced a pollination problem.
