Happy Pets - December 8, 2011

The Happy Pets Newsletter!

(Volume 2, Number 233, December 8, 2011) (Read Full Newsletter!)

Greeting:

Over the coming weeks, ThriftyFun will be making some changes to our email newsletters to try to accomplish two goals. The first is to decrease the size of emails we send out. And the second is to drive more traffic to ThriftyFun. For people who like to read the long version newsletter, the old format is one click away by clicking the "View Full Newsletter" link at top of every newsletter we send out.

Today's featured pets are: Shinook who, of course, loves to do all things Jack Russell and also helped raise a baby crow. Also, meet Ellee a three year old Sheltie who was a Christmas pup.

We are running low on pet tips, please send us your best advice.

Thanks to everyone who shared a pet with us recently. If you haven't shared your furry, feathered, or scaly family member yet, send in your story and photos today or maybe a pet tip. We can also post updated photos and information every six months. You just might win $25 in one of our weekly contests.

If you have questions about your pets our members might be able to help. Send us a request to post.

Note: If your pet is quite ill, including infections, poisoning, etc. please check with your vet. Please do not submit requests that would involve a diagnosis, as we do not have a vet on staff and you don't want to delay in caring for your pet family member.

If you have a solution to either of the featured guides highlighted in today's newsletter please share:

  • Saving Money on Horse Feed

Today's Photos:

Shinook (Jack Russell Terrier)
Shinook is a 6 year old Jack Russell Terrier. My coworker and friend had Jack Russells and bred them. I got one from the last litter. He was 6 weeks old when we were able to bring him home.

He loves to dig, hunt, and search for things. Shinook also like to swim, give kisses, go horse back riding with me, and make new friends. He was a father figure to a baby crow he found last spring under our evergreen tree. We raised it to an adult and named it Jett. This fall, he flew away. We miss him, but had so much fun with him. Jett loved everyone, especally Shinook.

Ellee (Sheltie)
Ellee is a 3 year old Sheltie. We bought her from a breeder in Feb. 2009. She loves to bark and chase the kids. She is very smart and was easy to train. Ellee was born on Christmas 2008!

Today's Tips:

Santa Suit For Pet
It cost $13.00 for a Santa Suit for Digby and it was easy to make. I made it sort of small as the piggy grows so fast, but I can use it on my small dog next year.

Approximate Time: 1 day

Supplies:

  • Velcro
  • thread
  • material
  • needle
  • thimble
  • fabric glue

Instructions:

I had a pattern from a dollar store model and just made one by hand. I also used an old dog sweater to get the size. I'm not a seamstress so it's not perfect.

Latex Gloves to Remove Pet Hair
I have found the best thing for removing dog hair from furniture is rubber gloves. The texture in them helps pick up the hair easily so you can vacuum it off. The dollar store has 2 pair for $1.00.

Questions From Readers:

Helping Rescue Dog Get Comfortable in New Home
We rescued a dog 4 weeks ago from the SPCA, he is a Husky/Greyhound cross we think, could be a Husky/Shepherd cross. The vet says Greyhound. He is very shy and skittish, does not want to play at all, gentle, good with kids and other dogs, but very reticent. What can we do, how can we get him interested? He will only come into our living room when we are not there, if we are he stays in his bed in the dining room.
