Remembering To Turn Your Lights Off

If you're anything like me, my memory fails me quite often. On a rainy day I choose to drive with my headlights on but often forget to turn them off. On older model cars you do not get a reminder bell, so I simply turn the lights on and immediately lock my driver's door. When I go to get out of my car and realize the door is locked, it sparks my memory to turn the lights off. Sounds crazy, but it works!

Another idea is to leave your glove compartment open as long as nothing will fall out.

My trick is I take the ring I always wear on my left middle finger and put it on my right. When I stop the car and turn off the lights, I replace the ring to the original finger. When I get inside and notice the ring on the wrong hand, I know I have left my lights on.

What a great idea! so simple, and so effective! Reminds me of my little memory tool for whenever I am forced to park on a steep slope at our local Y. Although I know that the park position on the automatic transition will probably hold "Old Blue" without a problem, it still makes me very, very nervous! So I always add the parking brake just to be sure. To remind myself that I've done something out of the ordinary, I then put whatever handy I can find (kleenex box, empty plastic bag, bandana--you get the idea!) on the shift. That way I don't drive out of the Y parking lot later wondering why my old van just doesn't seem to be driving right. LOL!

That's a great idea... sort of like tying a string on your finger. One of the things I loved about my old Saabs was that it was idiot proofed that way. When you turned the ignition switch off the lights went off automatically.

The old Saabs had another convienant feature in that if you wanted to lock it from the outside, you had to lock the driver's door with the key. You could, however, get really stupid and lock your keys in the trunk.

I got really stupid once so I decided to try a new plan. It involved keeping a copy of each of my most necessary keys on a seperate ring in my other pocket. Keys are cheap, rings are cheap, locksmiths can get pretty expensive.
