Tips for Good Smelling Clothing

My clothes don't keep the fragrance of my laundry detergent or fabric softener after they have been dried. They smell great after I wash them but when I put them in the dryer they lose the scent. How can I keep the fresh scent of my fabric softener in my clothes? I use Gain detergent, fabric softener and dryer sheets.

Julienne Chicken Tip for Salads

I was in the grocery store the other day at the deli counter getting some lunch meat for my husband. A man in front of me ordered chicken lunch meat cut about 1/4 inch thick. What in the world I thought? So, I asked him. Whatya gonna do with that? He said he was going to cut it in Julienne strips and place it on a bed of lettuce. Said he loved the grilled chicken salads at the fast food places, but this was a a whole lot cheaper and always fresh and new.

So, when it was my turn I did the same thing. When I got home, starving, I cut it in little square strips like they do at the fast food places, added a few different lettuce varieties I had on hand, some tomato and carrots, etc. and then placed the chicken in the microwave for a 30 seconds or so. I had an easy and GREAT salad for around, oh, I guess $1 to $1.50. Why didn't I think of that before. Great dish for lunch at home or in the office.

Zoee (Labrador Retriever)

Zoee is a 4 year old Labrador Retriever. I got Zoee in NY in 2002.

She likes to play with Tennis balls, and go to the Ocean swimming. She loves BBQ's and waits in her chair while you make the dinner on the deck.

Snuggles (Pug)

Snuggles is 7-8 weeks old in these pictures. She is a black pug. We got her Saturday, January 20, 2007 from a private party.

She is very smart and likes to give lots of kisses and play with blanky. She is being paper box trained and is catching on very fast. She was crate trained the first day we brought her home. She also likes to sleep.

Ruby Ramona (German Shepherd x Siberian Husky)

Ruby Ramona is our 9 month old German Shepherd x Siberian Husky mix. I bought Ruby 2 months after my beautiful boy Ace passed away. She was to keep our 13 year old Kelpie, Josie, company who sadly died when Ruby was 7 months old.

Ruby loves playing with the kids and is well socialised with other dogs. For fun Ruby loves long walks and lots of rough play with the kids and her boyfriend, Barron (Belgian shepherd) She gets a bit destructive when left alone with separation anxiety but is an absolutely wonderful pup all round.

Ruby is just absolutely gorgeous. She is highly intelligent, yet a little stubborn at times but is just the most beautiful gentle girl ever. She has given me so much love and helped me to grieve my other lost Fur babies. She means the world to us all.

Today's Tips:

Eggs in a Nest

This is a lean times meal. My children and I have been at times through very lean times, and this is what I often served up when the cupboard was almost bare.

Take 4 (or however many you need to feed your family) large, older potatoes. Wash them well but do not remove skins. Place them on a baking tray in the oven and cook till almost soft. Remove potatoes, when cool enough to handle, scoop some of the inside out to make a hollow. In each potato, break one egg (minus shell of course!) return to oven and cook till eggs have set.

This makes a nourishing meal, eggs are little protein packages, potatoes are good too. This meal is enjoyable even when your times aren't particularly lean!

Repair For Cracked Dish

Very good tip for a cracked dish. If a cracked dish is boiled for 45 minutes in sweet milk, the crack will be so welded together that it will hardly be visible, and will be strong it will stand the same usage as before.

By Jan E from Suring, WI

Instant Mashed Potatoes As A Thickener

When making deviled eggs, cream soups, even tuna or chicken salad; do you ever find that it is too runny or thin? Try adding dry instant mashed potato flakes. Add a little bit at a time, and let it sit a few minutes, as it will thicken up. Add as much as you need until you achieve the desired results. It actually seems to improve the flavor, too! This has saved me many times, especially with deviled eggs and tuna salad. Instead of having to make more roux or adding flour to your soup, this is just so much easier and quicker, and lump free. Experiment a little, you will be amazed at what you can do to salvage your cooking oops.

By Lori Owsley from Elgin, IL

Thrifty Bead Scoop

Instead of buying a 'bead scoop' why not use a metal Chinese soup spoon! Very inexpensive, I got mine for about .50 at an Oriental market. It scoops and pours with ease. The tip is tapered which makes it easy to pour back into any container.

Leave Pillowcases Inside Out

When I do the laundry, I leave pillow cases inside out. Then when using them, I reach my hand inside, grab the two corners and the tips of pillow and turn pillow case right over. It's easier than trying to shove a pillow inside the pillow case.

My Frugal Life - We Have It All

I guess since my hubby was in the Navy, I learned to be frugal. I save money to this day and am proud of it. I have seen my friends struggle and even get depressed with no money. I watch for sales, open my blinds on a sunny day, hang clothes outside in summer or hang them downstairs in the basement on a rack in winter.

Years later, my hubby got cancer and was out of work. He is in remission and we have still surviving because we both pulled together by being frugal and kept everything we own. I still garage sale, watch the stars outside with a glass of wine with hubby, take long walks instead of drive, watch for sales, eat our big meal at 3:00 PM (better discount) and barter with our friends. We have it all and live happily ever after frugally.

Mix Powdered Make Up With Vaseline

Saw a tip about mixing powdered blush/eyeshadow with lip balm to make it creamy, I use vaseline and it works with that, too.

Save Hair Color Gloves

For those of you who color your own hair, save the plastic gloves and wear them when working on any kind of messy craft or painting project. They will keep your hands a lot cleaner.

Towels To Prevent Drafts

I use rolled up towels to keep out wind drafts from coming in beneath our doors and windows. I roll the towel then I put rubber bands on both ends to hold it together.

Shop Around Before Buying New

Shop freecycle.org, craigslist.com, thrift shops, newspaper ads and ask around before buying new. If you must buy new on line is often tax and shipping free. Grocery by lowest first, swap for produce, $store, discount store, grocery chain. Do one a week and keep list for comparison on often used items. Walgreens has an EasySaver rebate program and things are free (except tax). Entertainment Book has paid for itself in the first couple months, swap with others. Our building organized a thrift pick up and we put in and removed "treasures"

Repairing Vinyl Tiles

My daughter and I laid the pre-glued vinyl tile on my kitchen and bathroom floors. Some of the tiles are loose at the edges. Is there a way to keep them down? Should we use some kind of sealer?

Navy Curtains

Okay, I usually just post MY opinion on things, but now I need YOURS! I live in a great townhouse complex, with one rule that chaps me, we have to have white/cream curtains hanging in the windows. So I am going to take 2 white sheets from Wally World and 2 navy sheets, give them a quick zip on the machine and put them up (I washed the others and the red didn't like it too much, they shrank some).

SO, what do I do (economically minded ) to decorate the navy part of the sheet. They are on a simple wooden rod (I'll use the sheet top to place the rod in) but need some pizzaz. We do NOT "decorate" by color or genre per se, just what fits us. We have sorta tanish spongepainted walls (previous tenant) and a burgundy bedspread. HELP!

Michawn from California

Mother's Day Luncheon Ideas

I work for a foster care and adoption agency. Every year we hold a luncheon the day before Mother's Day to honor any local birthmothers who might want to come. I would appreciate any suggestions for gifts or a theme for this year. Some examples of past ones are forget-me-not seeds in special packets with a poem, aloe vera plants with a handmade copper wire and bead decoration (aloe vera because it is healing). We dug them up from a staff member's yard! We are a non-profit on a very tight budget. I know you all will have some wonderful ideas so thank you in advance!

Ideas For Using Cellophane Holiday Bags

I saw a very creative idea for using the cellophane holiday bags you buy in a package at the Dollar Store, and promptly forgot it! These bags are see-thru with easter eggs, hearts, etc. printed on them for holidays. Of course, they're great for candy, but what more innovative ideas do you have? Thanks in advance!
