New Jersey Sky

My family and I was traveling to New Jersey to visit some family and I just love taking pictures. This is a image of us entering White Plains Rd. That's the Bronx, I think. Enjoy, it's a beautiful sky.

Tin Can Wedding Flower Holder

Cute and inexpensive decoration for a country themed wedding is my tin can art. Just clean ordinary tin cans and hot glue a square of styrofoam into the bottom, adding whatever silk flower you choose. Wrap a length of ribbon of choice around the outside and hot glue overlapping ends, bowtie some raffia around the lower part of can and let hang. Take a length of ribbon and hot glue end to the back of one can and the other end to the back of the other can. This is your hanger.

Romeo (Yorkshire Terrier) and Phillip

Romeo is 7 years old, my son, Philip is 23. Romeo is a Yorkshire Terrier. I bought him through a wonderful breeder in New Jersey. He loves to play fetch! He is a wonderful little dog. He protects all of us in the house, especially when I'm in the pool alone. He sits out on the deck and watches me until I come in!

A Gift Frame For Earrings

A friend will be celebrating her birthday soon and I wanted to give her a pair of earrings but in an interesting way. So I decoupaged a frame, added the velvety paper and glued on a large chunk of cork, stuck the earrings into it and wah la! I placed the glass and paper from the frame behind the velvet paper so my friend will be able to use the frame as a frame later on. I work a lot with frames and find them an interesting 'canvas'.

Today's Tips:

Memory Quilt from Childhood

This is a tip for people into quilting, or just into family heirlooms. When my son was about two years old he wanted to build a tent. I got out an old white sheet and hung it between two chairs. We used this same sheet to be his tent for many years, and eventually we began to color, draw pictures, make designs, or write sayings or just whatever, with permanent fabric markers on the sheet. Everyone had to sign their drawings and date them. All the grandparents, friends and relatives drew on the sheet over the years. In fact, it kind of became a tradition.

Before the sheet got too old, we took it and had it made into a quilt top. My son is seventeen now, and this quilt is one of his prized possessions. Now that all of his grandparents and great grandparents have passed, he can look back at the pictures he drew with his "best friends" and he can still even recall some of the stories that went along with some of the drawings. The quilt is priceless to me as well. I love reading some of my parents and grandparents quotes and wishes to my son for his life, seeing their drawings and signatures and recalling those wonderful times we all had together.

Use Laundry Basket For Transporting Groceries

Having to carry groceries from my car into my apartment is always a challenge. Add a two year old in tow, stairs to climb, and possible icy side walks in the winter, and you have disaster waiting to happen.

Since I only have so many hands for shopping bags and hand holding, I now leave a laundry basket in my van when I go shopping. I can usually fit all of the bags into the basket and since it is contoured for hip carrying I still have a hand free for my son. The plastic makes it easy to clean up if there are any spills and I don't worry about it breaking like the flimsy cardboard boxes you can buy at the grocery store.

Mayonnaise To Clean Plant Leaves

Apply mayonnaise to your plants to clean them and make them shine beautifully.

By Tammy from Economy, IN

Editor's Note: This may work fine on waxy leaves like a philodendron but it could harm softer leaved plants. There is vinegar in mayonnaise which can change the pH of the plant. Has anyone tried this?

Use Spray Leave In Conditioner To Tame Frizzy Hair

A quick, easy way to beat the frizzies every day is to spray a light coat of leave-in conditioner on your hair in the morning when you comb, brush, or style it. Hair stays shiny and soft and it sure beats those goppy creams, gels, serums, etc.

Whiter Whites - Tips For Washing White Clothing

Put Cascade dishwashing detergent in your white laundry to make the whites their whitest.

By Tammy from Economy, IN

Editor's Note: Most dishwasher detergent contains bleach. Be sure to only try this on clothing that can be bleached. I would recommend using 1 Tbsp. per 1/2 gallon of water and soak the item before washing for best results.

Is Cooking From Scratch Still Financially Beneficial For Small Families?

I have a family of 3 and am wondering if cooking from scratch can be financially beneficial for such a small family. I'd love to do it but am afraid it won't be cost effective. I read a lot about cooking and freezing items - do you freeze food in Ziplock baggies or plastic containers?

Thanks in advance for any advice/suggestions.

Frugal Outdoor Garden Gift Ideas

I want to make a gift for my Aunt who is coming to visit in a week. Does anyone have any quick ideas for something that is useful or outside ornamental that doesn't look artificial such as silk flowers or plastic. Not that there is anything wrong with silk flowers she just wouldn't care for them. My Aunt would love outdoor garden things, nature things etc. The more creative and frugal the better. I just can't think of anything that would be fast and that I wouldn't have to spend money on. Thank you.

Ideas For Making Inukshuks

I would like to make small inukshuks, which are stone sculptures the Inuit in Canada create to mark trails, for my husband's Canadian family. They have round or flat pieces to make the legs, body and head and some longer flat pieces to mark the start of the body and the arms. I'd like to use frosted glass, sea glass, etc., but I'm having trouble coming up with the materials. Any ideas?

What Is Behind Vinyl Siding?

We have a 9' x 16' area on the back of our house -- 3 sides are vinyl siding and the other side was wood and screen. We replaced the wood and screen with windows and sliding door. This goes out to our deck.

What is behind the vinyl siding? Can we easily remove the siding and finish the walls like a normal room in a house?

I hope I explained this clearly enough.

Solution for Shoes that Slip

I just bought a delish pair of leopard print slingbacks. There are two problems. The first is that I made the error of trying them on with athletic socks, so I didn't realize that without that thick cotton, my foot slides forward. Which means that my toes hang off the front, looking like the shoes don't fit.
The second is that when they were rung in, the young woman went by what was on the box, saying that it was okay that they didn't match the shoes as they were clearance and the same price. So my receipt is worthless for returning them.

Are there any ways to sort of...prop my foot in there so it doesn't slide, besides those little gripper pads? I've never had much luck with those.

These are the shoes. Granted, they were cheap, but still, I'd like to get some use out of them.
