Is a down comforter OK after five years of storage in a plastic tub or should I get rid of it?

If it stayed dry then it should be totally fine. You might just need to air it out a bit. If it was put in clean then it doesn't need washing.

If the tub was dry, the comforter should be fine. You may want to wash it , or home dryclean it with Dryel. If it was put away clean, you should be able to fluff it in the dryer on low with several fabric softener sheets to get rid of the "stored" smell. Or, if you have an outdoor clothesline, you can air it outside. Check it over carefully for rips so it doesn't shed feathers all over. I have not kept a down comforter in a storage bin for five years, but have kept other bedding, towels and clothing in bins longer than that and they were fine when taken out.

I would think it would be okay! Put it in the dryer with a tennis ball and a couple of dryer sheets and "fluff-clean" it.
