I want to put my hair in a mohawk but I have to leave 3 inches on the sides. How long should I put my hawk?

I agree with at least 6 inches, and although i have heard many different things used to keep a mohawk work, the only product I can back from personal experience is Big Sexy hair tease in a bottle. It's not cheap, but your hawk wont move even if you sleep on it.

If you really have to leave 3 inches then your mohawk should about 6 inches at the min, or more. If you want to see it good.
