Craft Project: Crocheted Carnations

You can crochet this and many other carnations with just a few crochet stitches and some fake foliage stem ware. I made this one for a sample for here, but have also made roses for wedding and anniversary boutonnieres.

Simple Shelf to Organize Shoes

An easy project with three pieces of wood can help organize that pile of shoes at the bottom of your closet. My darling husband constructed this simple shelf, at my request, and his shoes and boots are manageable and tidy. I asked him to make one for my closet too.

Simply cut a long piece that will fit in your closet and two more about 8 inches high. Screw the two small ones at either end of the long one so that you can store shoes underneath the shelf and shoes or boots on top of the shelf. Simple project that made a big difference for us!

Edy (Boxer)

Edy Gourmet Drummond is a 1 year old small female boxer. I got her as a present from my husband a year ago for our 22nd wedding anniversary. Edy likes to eat what ever I'm eating. She likes to take naps with me.

She also likes to run, play, leap, hop, bounce and I think she would skip if she could! Boxers have lots of energy and they need a lot of exercise and attention. Edy
is wearing a pair of feather angel wings I made from the craft store.

Hey U (Dachsund/Pomeranian)

Hey U is a 3 year old doxie pom or pomi-weenie. I got him as pound puppy. I asked the ole boy if he had any small dogs, and he said wait right here. He brought back this 6 month old puppy, that jumped outta his arms and into mine. I wrote a check on the spot. I really wasn't puppy shopping just stopping by to donate. Hey U likes to chase rabbits with his buddy, a standard poodle. He also likes to beg for food. He loves babies, and guards them. We are not sure from what but he won't let "it" get his baby!

Craft Project: Cute Bunny Magnet

My daughter created this cute little bunny magnet in no time. It would also be cute to wear as a pin. Simply glue a pin back to the back of the bunny's head instead of the magnetic strip.

Crocheting a Rug from Scrap Fabrics

I have a rather large fabric collection. We decided to paint our new bathroom a pumpkin color. It looks very nice but hard to match for accessories. So, I decided to crochet a rug using my left over fabric.

I researched it on the web and found different ideas and patterns. I chose to cut my materials into 1 inch strips and use a Q crochet hook. I am half way through and it looks great. It's a pain to sew the strips together, but so much better then throwing the fabric out!

Use Carabiner to Secure Purse to Shopping Cart

I've heard news announcers tell us to use the seat belt in a shopping cart to keep our purses safe by putting it through the handle of the purse and snapping it closed. Sometimes the seat belt is broken or missing, so it isn't always possible.

I went to the hardware section of Walmart and bought a carabiner. A carabiner is one of those hooks climbers use that you see now on water bottles or tubes of sunscreen. I put the hook on the shoulder strap of my purse.

When I go to the store, I put my purse on the baby seat and just clip the hook to the cart. It only takes a second to clip it on and off. It is much safer than using the seat belt. My everyday purse is multicolored and the clip I got is blue, so it matches. Cashiers almost always remark about how much safer this is than the seat belt.

I also put one on the strap of my cell phone so I can just hook my phone to my belt loop or to my purse, or whatever. I got some smaller ones and put my house keys on one, my car keys on another, etc. I also put all of those little discount cards the stores give me on one.

I can quickly give the clerk my card without handing over all my keys, or I can give my gas key to the gas station attendant quickly (Yes, I live in Oregon where we aren't allowed to fill our own tank). Carabiners have so many uses, I love them.

Crab Apples for Pest Repellent

There are no chemicals involved so I guess it's a green tip. If you have a problem with roaches, ants, mice, or other pests inside the house, gather some crab apples and place them around your basement, crawl space, and foundation of your house. My in-laws have done this for years and haven't even seen a trace of a pest or rodent.

Use Plastic Boxes as Litter Boxes

Covered cat litter boxes are ridiculously expensive, however they certainly do help contain cat odors. Since we are a multi-cat family I found the best way to cut the cost and still reap the benefit was to use plastic storage containers.

You can purchase a nice size storage container for around $5. The storage containers now come in a variety of designer colors so designing your own cat condo by stacking them expands the possibilities.

Using a box blade knife, carefully cut out a hole on one side of the container large enough to accommodate your cat. You will want to leave several inches at the bottom to provide a lip to contain the cat litter inside the box.

Fill your new cat litter box with litter and if you choose, you can even attach air fresheners to the bottom of the lid before popping it on the container. For additional convenience you may apply adhesive hooks to the back to store the litter scoop and disposable bags.

When it is time to clean the litter box just remove the lid and scoop the waste as usual.

As I mentioned before you can expand your cat litter box into a condo by stacking a second box filled with a comfy pillow for kitty to use as a "hiding" cubby.

Stop Temper Tantrums With Gentle Restraint

When it comes to restraining a child, there are good restraints and there are bad restraints. Obviously, tying a child to a chair is a bad restraint, but when a child is riding in a car, a car seat is a good restraint. The method you are about to learn involves a good and harmless restraint. Good because it will put an end to tantrums, which is not only good for you, but for the child. The restraint in this method usually only lasts for less than 15 seconds and you will probably only have to do it once or twice, then the tantrums will stop. Here is the method:

You must be consistent with this and do it as soon as you see a tantrum begin. No matter where you are, get on your knees on the floor, then place the child on your lap with his back facing you.

Wrap one of your arms around your child's arms, wrap your other arm around his legs. Be gentle, the intention is not to hurt the child, but simply to keep him from flailing his arms and legs.

Next, put your mouth next to the child's ear and speak in a soft voice. The child will have to pipe down some in order to hear you. Say something like, "When we throw our arms and legs around, we can hurt ourselves and other people, so I am going to hold you here until you are still because I don't want anyone to get hurt." The child will most likely be still and silent before you finish the statement.

Then let the child go. If the tantrum starts again, do the same thing all over again. Do this each time a tantrum begins.

After you do this once or twice, all you should have to do is start walking towards the child when a tantrum is about to begin, and the child will stop the tantrum himself. At that point you will know that the battle against tantrums has been won.

Wrist Support While Using Mouse

Need a wrist support to use while operating your mouse? They're not cheap in the stores. So I use a travel-sized pack of facial tissues. It is the perfect height, and very soft. You can wrap it with a paper towel or light cloth, so your skin doesn't stick to the plastic packaging.

Works for me, and cost almost nothing!

The Money That ThriftyFun Has Saved Me

I wanted to list the ways Thrifty Fun has saved me money over the years. I will itemize the things here:

  • Vinegar Weed Spray: I saved on buying weed killers so I will say it has saved me maybe $12.

  • Fabric/Air Spray: I don't buy fabric refreshers anymore since I read how to dilute fabric softener in a spray bottle; 3 parts water/1 part softener. I love the smell and sometime just use it on my clothes to reduce the static. $5.00 a Month

  • Cayenne Rodent Repellent: I won't even go into how much money knowing how to keep rodents out of the car insides by using cayenne pepper. I would say in the hundreds or thousands of dollars.

  • Bath Oil: I use regular sunflower or safflower oil in my bath rather than buying them at the store, $5 a Month.

  • Hummingbird Feeder Recipe: I learned how to make hummingbird nectar by using four parts water to one part sugar.

  • Flea Tips: I keep salt around the area when there are fleas. Peroxide and baby shampoo work better than flea shampoos.

This is the site that gave me the idea to order Frontline online instead of at the vets. That saves me $12.00 during the Summer.

I don't re-infest the house with fleas by keeping a flea collar in the vacuum bag. An exterminators fee has probably been saved by this.

  • Snacks: I also learned how to feed the school kids in the summer all day by having staples such as beans, oatmeal, rice, etc. to snack on instead of junk snacks. That saves probably a hundred dollars a month.

These are just a few of the things that have saved me dollars from looking over this interesting and useful site.

Thank you, Thrifty Fun!

Getting Rid of Bermuda Grass

Does the homemade weed killer kill Bermuda grass? I rocked my front yard and the landscaper who did it did not lay any type of ground cover before laying the rocks. Now I have Bermuda grass and weeds coming up. Most of the weed killers over the counter do get rid of the weeds, but I haven't found anything to get rid of the Bermuda grass. Thank you in advance for your help.

Paint Color Ideas

We just purchased our first new home and I am stumped on choosing paint colors for the walls. I want to do a dark cranberry in the kitchen but I am not sure on the living room and the hall. I am getting new furniture which is chocolate brown with dark end tables.

The wall that you see through the arch way will have to match the living room I think or at least be a shade lighter. Any help would be appreciated. thanks. I was thinking of Sherwin Williams 6020 Marooned for the Kitchen, 7525 for the living room and 7254 for the hallway. I am also wondering where I should stop painting the kitchen, over top of the closet or at the corner before.

Teaching a Puppy to Come

We have a 7 month puppy, Cash, who's going through his "teenage" years. If he's outside and decides he doesn't want to come in (not too often, luckily) he just won't. We get him to sit/lay down, but if we get close he runs off and it turns into a fun game of chase (fun for him anyway). If I give up, he'll never learn to listen. Any suggestions on how to 'discipline' this behavior to get him to stop doing it? DH and I were extremely frustrated yesterday. It took 30 minutes to get him and we only got him because he sat down by our sons, who grabbed his harness. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Coffee Shop Corn Muffins

This is one of my family's favorite. I do have a question that I'm hoping someone can advise me. I would like to use mini-muffin pans but don't know if the temperature should be changed and also what the bake time should be. I would appreciate any help. Thank you.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/4 cup cornmeal
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 3/4 cup oil

Directions

In large bowl, combine first six ingredients. In another bowl, beat egg, buttermilk and oil. Stir into dry ingredients just until moistened.Fill 3/4 full greased or paper-lined muffin cups.

Bake at 425 degrees F for 12-15 minutes.

Instead of using buttermilk, add 1 tablespoon of white vinegar or lemon juice in a measuring cup and fill with milk to measure one cup. Let stand 10-15 minutes. Cool about 5-8 minutes.

For high rising, rounded tops on muffins like you see in the bakeries, preheat your oven to 500 degrees F. As soon as you put the muffins into the oven, decrease the temperature to whatever the recipe calls for. Remember to decrease the baking time.

This may take a bit of watching and practice but the result will be worth it. The increased temperature causes the muffins to rise quickly giving them that nice dome-shaped top.
