Travel Tips for Alger County in Michigan, US

Travel Destination:Alger County in Michigan's Upper Peninsula

Country:United States

Free Things to Do:

There are numerous sandy beaches on the shores of Lake Superior to swim in and sunbathe on; and great agate hunting for rock collectors. We have hiking trails all through the Hiawatha National Forest and along the Pictures Rocks shoreline. There are incredible waterfalls all over Alger County, many can be viewed after just a short walk from a paved parking area. A visit to Seney National Wildlife center would be a great family activity to view the local wildlife and maybe see a Bald Eagle or a Sandhill crane.

Low Cost Things to Do:

A short ferry ride over to Grand Island will take you to some of the most beautiful camping and hiking areas available in the U.P; you may even see a black bear or two on the island. There are small lakes on the island to fish in or you could even try your hand at fishing in Lake Superior. There are great trails to ride ATVs on, and if you don't own one there are four-wheelers available in the area to rent!

Expensive But Worth It:

There is a boat ride available in the town of Munising that will take you and the family all along the shore of the Pictured Rock National Shoreline so that you may view some incredible rock formations formed through the centuries. There is also a glass-bottomed boat that takes you on a ride to view the shipwrecks in the bay. For a very exciting fishing experience you could try charter fishing with Shelter Bay Charters and catch some very tasty lake trout or even a fresh salmon!

Nightlife:

Roasting marshmallows by the campfire and talking about all the day's events; and a good night's sleep to rest up for all the fun for tomorrow!

Just for Kids:

Camping, hiking, fishing, swimming, rock hunting, scuba-diving, backpacking, mountain bike riding, the adventure just never stops!

Seasonal Information:

Winter sports that attract vacationers to the Alger County area are snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing. There is also great ice fishing on Lake Superior.

Inexpensive Lodging:

There are numerous hotels, motels, cabins and resorts in the area. For the most inexpensive stay I would recommend a smaller mom & pop place off-shore of Lake Superior; places on the lake are very expensive. If you stay at a place off the lake you can still take a short drive to the lake to have a day of swimming.

The Christmas Motel in Christmas, MI is very inexpensive and just two blocks away from the Bay Furnace Park and all the swimming and picnicking fun your family desires. There are also a great number of campgrounds in the area, I would highly recommend the Bay Furnace Park in Christmas, MI.

Chamber of Commerce Contact Information:

The website www.algercounty.org is the most informative website about the area. It has links for lodging, restaurants, activities, and summer events
