A friend of mine washed a cup in the dishwasher with gum in it. Now when they use the dishwasher the plastic cups have a sticky film on them. Please any suggestions on how to clean the dishwasher?

You are going to have to find the gum and remove it. Then run the dishwasher through several cycles with no dishes in it.
Do a wash with powdered Tang. It will dissolve the gum
