Today's Tips

Keeping Seams Together When Sewing

I'm new to sewing. Pinning fabric together doesn't always leave me with matched seams. I tried an experiment which worked well for me. I used tape to hold the fabric together and ended up with matching seams!

Gumdrop Tree Idea

-Green and Red Gumdrops
-1 Styrofoam Cone
-Toothpicks - cut in 1/2

Place 1/2 of toothpick in each gumdrop; line the styrofoam cone with the gumdrops; place a large gumdrop on top.

Place on a holiday platter that is lined with rock salt (rock salt looks like snow!) add a candle or a snowman; it makes a festive centerpiece for a buffet table.

Children should be warned about the toothpick in the gumdrop before eating the gumdrop off the gumdrop tree.

Christmas Fruit Tree Tray

Cover a styrofoam cone with curly lettuce; add slices of apples beginning from the bottom and adding slices until you reach top of cone; place a cherry or piece of pineapple for the topping.

Place on a silver tray; add rock salt around the fruit tree; add a ceramic snowman or Christmas ceramic piece, a small votive candle; if the tray is large enough you can add a small toothpick holder or even the small bowl of caramel dip.

If there is not enough space on the fruit tree tray; make another tray to hold your dip and toothpick holder - use another silver tray, put rock salt on the tray, add a pretty Christmas bowl, toothpick holder, a votive candle, a snowman figurine.

Light the candle and see your guests "flock" to the Christmas fruit or veggie tree.

You can also make a veggie tree using veggies on the cone.

Making Junk Mail Useful

Like many others who receive junk mail, we tended to discard these into the trash. After realizing that many of the inserts had blank backsides, I quickly turned these pages into scrap pads. I just simply cut each page into quarter sections and added them to the scrap paper holder, located near our telephone, for messages. I also use the scrap near my computer for writing down new websites or information I may need. A simple small container of plastic, wood, or wire can be used to house the scrap paper.

Decorating My Husband's Garage

I am looking for a border that would go in my husbands garage. He is either wanting something Ford related, he is into Mustangs, or I thought if I could find a border that looked like diamond plating. That is what he is putting on the baseboards. What do you think would look good, and where can a person find something like that?

Removing Heavy Plastic Packaging From Products

What device or technique do you use to remove the sealed heavy plastic packaging used on many products? Tearing it won't work. Cutting with scissors either doesn't work or ruins the scissors. Knives and box cutters are dangerous; they slip on the smooth packaging. The packaging itself can cut skin too. I've been looking for a tool at places like Staples, but I'm getting nowhere.

Iris from Columbia, SC

Editor's Note: I know exactly what Iris is talking about. A lot of items, like DVDs or small electronics at warehouse stores, now come in really thick plastic. It's VERY difficult to cut through and you can cut yourself on the plastic edges.

Cleaning The Inside of Your Car Windows

I was reading the post about the person who was trying to get wax build up off the outside of their car window. That made me wonder this... what on earth can I use on the inside of my car windows to get them clean and streak free? They don't seem too bad until the sunlight glares off of them and then I can hardly see out them.

Covering a Wing Chair

Anyone have any ideas on covering a wing chair? It has wooden legs and exposed wood on the arms and across the top of the back cushion. I can't upolster it and I've never made slip covers. I do love the look of slipcovers so I priced having one made. $300 just for the labor. UGH. As far as I am concerned that's just a little pricy. I can't imagine when I add the cost of fabric. I need help!

Alternatives to Band Aids

Does anyone have any ideas for substitutes for Band Aids? It seems that certain parts of my skin, i.e. inside forearm, tummy, back of hand, etc., have become very sensitive to the adhesive. I actually have one place that looks like the sticky part has left a scar. I'm hoping it will eventually go away, but who knows.

Thanks for any help.
