Lake Shelbyville, Illinois

The photo was taken a few years ago at Lake Shelbyville, Illinois.

I thought it was really beautiful so I took a picture of it.

I hope you enjoy it.

Amarelinha and Sailing

Have a camera with you all the time, because there is a beauty in everything.

The cat in the pictures is the same one. It is called Amarelinha, she is about 4 years old. She was a street cat that we brought in when she was still a kitten. The Christmas picture was taken last Christmas and the other picture was taken two weeks ago.

Today's Tips

Deviled Eggs Tips and Recipes

Post your favorite deviled eggs tips and recipes.

Deviled Egg Substitutions

Substitute pickle juice for vinegar in your deviled eggs. It has a tangy flavor, and the juice usually gets poured down the drain, anyway. Use it and save on vinegar.

Treating People Kindly

One of the thriftiest things you can do is to treat people kindly. Offer your help and talents wherever you can. It's very much like planting seeds -- you're growing goodwill for the future. When you need help with a project, they'll be more likely to come to your aid.

Working together often accomplishes the impossible.

Dealing with Loose Face Powder

I have found an easy way to deal with loose facial powder. I put it in a clean saltshaker, and that way I can sprinkle it onto a powder puff and apply to my face with little waste.

Preventing Odors in Your Refrigerator

Tips for keeping your refrigerator smelling fresh. Post your ideas.

Charcoal Briquettes for Odor

I keep a dish of charcoal briquettes in my refrigerator to remove food odors. It seems to work better and last longer than baking soda. Note: Do not use the charcoal that has been treated with lighter fluid.

Keeping Cook Books Propped and Open While Cooking

If you need to keep a recipe book propped open while cooking, take one of those wooden pants hangers from your closet and clamp it over the pages at the top of the book. If the book is light enough, you can even hang it by the hook at eye level on a cupboard door knob!

Taking Care of Your Feet

When looking for shoes, an expensive pair of shoes will often last longer than a cheaper pair. Plus the better shoes will be better for your feet, especially if you're on your feet a lot. I got this advice from my Doctor. It's better to take care of your feet while you can, rather than later on wishing you had.

Vinegar and Paper Towels

To keep cleaning time to a minimal, I keep a bottle of vinegar and roll of paper towels in the Kitchen and both bathrooms. I squirt the surfaces, sinks, toilets, floors, windows, mirrors with it and wipe with a paper towel. Less than 2 minutes each day. The vinegar is a natural disinfectant and deodorizer and is much safer than using commercial products.

Crockpot BBQ Wieners

When my Aunt needs a quick, hurry up entree to have at a last minute, whether it be for unexpected company dropping in or for a church fellowship she might have not known about, she does this. At all times she keeps several packages of wieners in the freezer, just for this reason. She can microwave them for a quick thaw, drain, cut in bite-size pieces and put in a crockpot with BBQ sauce. She says they're always a big hit.

Clothing That Never Goes Out of Style

The following are clothes that almost never go out of style. If you're out and about shopping, whether it be at a name brand store or mall, yard sales, thrift stores, or at a relative's house and they're getting rid of some of their clothes look for these.

Ladies: A-Line Skirts, solid color tailored blazers/jackets, solid color shells/blouses.

Men: Neutral color shirts and tailored to semi-tailored sports coats.

Organizing Stray Socks

I keep a cork board hung up in the laundry room. Each time I fold socks I take the strays and pin them up to the board. Next time I have strays, I check the board which usually has the match.

Parking Beside the Cart Holders

I have parked beside the cart holders in the parking lot for years for several reasons. At first I did it because I had an infant carrier, and rather than carry it into the store and then get the cart, I put it on the cart and pushed the whole thing inside. Now I use it so that I cut my risk of a door ding in half, and I can put the kids in the van and put the cart away without leaving them!

Freezing Bread

Living about 35 miles away from the nearest grocery store, we usually buy three loaves of bread at a time and put it in the freezer until we're ready to use it. To make them last longer we individually wrap each loaf (still in it's original packaging) in the plastic grocery store bag we brought them home in. This seems to insulate the loaves from freezer burn. When we need a loaf, we take it out of the grocery store bag and lay the loaf upside down on the counter to thaw. This seems to help the edges of the bread slices to not be too dried out.

Keeping the Washer and Dryer Clean

I've found a way to keep the exterior surfaces of my washer and dryer cleaner most of the time, and it's almost effortless! At the end of the day when my dishcloth is on its way to the basket I keep in the pantry for dirty kitchen towels, I use it to wipe down the tops (and once in a while the fronts) of my washer and dryer on the way (assuming the dishcloth isn't greasy.) I change my dishcloth daily so it's never very dirty. This way the washer and dryer stay cleaner and if I want to fold towels on top of my dryer, it's a clean place to do so.

Conscious Decision to Have Leftovers

As I was preparing dinner Saturday night, I made a conscious decision to have leftovers. I was sauteing chicken breasts for our meal and included one more than I would need, planned to cook frozen peas and included as a side dish a box of chicken flavored rice. After dinner, all the leftovers were refrigerated individually.

Today, I defrosted and heated homemade chicken broth, added a diced carrot and cooked, then added the peas to the pot, then the rice and finally the diced chicken meat. I adjusted seasonings to our preferences (more pepper, more parsley, a touch of onion salt) and with next to no effort, I have homemade chicken rice soup.

There won't be so much as a morsel of that pot left over!

Rotating Tires Tip

When buying new tires or having the ones that are currently on your car rotated. Ask to have the rims installed by hand, instead of with an impact wrench. With an impact wrench, sometimes they'll cross thread them. If this happens and later on you have a flat tire out on the roadway, you'll not be able to get the wheel off to change it. Or, the next time you have your tires rotated they'll have to break the bolts off to get your wheel off. (this is from experience)

Make a Child's Wading Pool Safer

Uses For Cornstarch

Tips for using cornstarch around the house. Post your ideas.

Super Shiny Finish on Your Car

After you apply polish or wax to your car and it has dried to a haze, sprinkle some cornstarch on your buffing cloth while you are working to rub off the wax. The cornstarch helps remove any polish build up and makes the finish super shiny!

Kitchen Moths

How on earth do I rid my cupboards of Kitchen moth, I live in a rather humid climate and in summer we have NO AC and so flies, moths and critters find their way in my house as well as others. I do not like using harsh chemicals like Raid and those aresol things as they are highly toxic, are there home tips for this? I know Yes, I clean the place often, it has nothing to do with that. It is the climate and the humidity. Also silverfish, the little buggers keep coming back, I have even replaced all carpets and put in Pergo flooring yet I have still spotted a few.
