I am the proud owner of a miniature red Dachshund, female, Name: Brandy Alexis. I have noticed that she has lost some of her enthusiasm, she spends a better part of the day by herself (i.e. work) could it be that she is lonely? And if so, what would be a good companion for her?

Thanks

Brandy's Mum (Hollyann)

My wife and I got our firt DAX, "Midget" in 1994. Since we both worked, we got another "Max" in 1995. They were great buddies.
In 2003, Midget got cancer and crossed the Bridge to Forever.
The day she left, "Patty"-Maxes sister had litter, so we got Maxes nephew "Fritz". They, too, were great buddies. We have just found out that Max has inoperable cancer.
We are already looking for a new companion for Fritz, because our experience is that they seem to develop stong bonds to one another.

Im also looking on here because I am afraid that my dachsie is lonely. I was fostering a cat for awhile and she really seemed to enjoy it. They played all the time and I wasnt worried when I was gone several hours at work. She is 2 now and for most of her life she has been the only animal in the house. Now that the cat is gone she seems more lethargic. What can I do to help her?

My Grannie had 2 Doxie's in Italy. They were called Dee Dee and Dum Dum. One of them got run over and other died of a broken heart. My sister now has 2 (a brother & Sister) called Monty & Bella. They are too cute, but they really do need canine company, even though my sister works from home, and has 3 girls. They need fellow mini Doxie Love.

I have a 3 year old mini daschund. My boyfriend and I are at school and work all day and Koda(our dog) is by himself. I want to get him a friend but I do not know if this is the right move. He is very spoiled and might get upset if we get another pet. When he was younger he lived with my parents for about 6 months and got along with their Boston Terrier and their cat, but now that he is older he has an "all about me" personality. What should we do?

There are many aids for dachshunds and other doggies who have back problems, don't put him down! As long as he is not in pain! Google!

My mini-daschund has just had neuro surgery about three weeks ago and is going to see his surgeon this Monday. He seems to be doing fine and occasionally slumps. He is five years old and was brought up with two cats whom I loved both very much. However, they have both passed away now, my Oppie (cat) passed October/07. I still have to work and I hate leaving my Dante alone. He seems to get so depressed when I am gone. I want to get a companion for her but I don't know whether to get another lil dog or another kitten, or even if he will accept them. He is very protective of me and when I am home he is always with me wherever I go. Even goes out with me in the car and gets insulted when I leave him. In order for me to go out I have to tell him I am going to work. Or else he tries to get out the door. I would definitely appreciate some suggestions. Thank you.

We have a full grown cat. My daughter just gave us a five week old puppy brown dachshund. How can we make sure sissy our cat and the dog get along? What do you recommend that we do to get them use to one another?

I have a dachshund that is overweight and she has lost control of most of her back part, I took her to the vet and they xrayed her and found nothing but said she must of hurt her back and gave me meds and to see if things got better. Well that was a week ago and things are not better but she eats and drinks just fine and is in no pain. She drags herself around where she wants to go. The vet thinks it is a good idea to put her down and I wanted to know if anyone has deal with this. Please email me at Lacyperal AT yahoo.com

Since she is a female try to give her a friend lik a a male dachshund or may be instead of buying another dog, have someone buy her from you that has male dachshunds or even girl dachshunds she can still hang out with them. I know this because I have two male dachshunds my self but only one can breed and his name is Scottie and he is a red haired if you have further questions you can contact me at sopita AT sbcglobal.net

We have four dogs. We have a cocker spaniel, border collie, Australian Shepard and a long hair mini doxee. The doxee gets along with all of them. He thinks he is the boss and sometimes starts with the others but all in all he is a great pack dog. He is best friends though with the border collie.

We started out with one dachshund. We have papers on her that say she is a miniature but she her size falls in the category of standard. Anyways, she is an older dog and started showing signs of depression. Her vet said her thyroid was low. We also ended up getting another dachshund to help keep her young. They get along great. Then we adopted a long haired chocolate dapple and he and my other young one love to play. Daisy, the older one, loves to watch them play and is glad they aren't jumping on her.

hello, im cc,i m the very proud owner of a chihuahua daschund named lilie female and 2 yrs old. when she began to act lonely we started leaving our big wooden door open and screen door closed it helps a lot. she likes to watch animals, plants, too. she absolutely love spending time with my grandma's dog and her daughter sweat pea. she isn't lonely although i go to school with my brother and she is alone in the house with two baby turtles.in order to find a good companion find a dog that is compatible with your dog from knowledge, discipline, rank(top dog-follower)and also keep her personality in mind when getting our 2nd dog bandit we made the wrong choice and didn't go through that list, and they pretty much hate each other, but he lives outside.

I have a long-hair male who will be three in January named Mr. Snuggles. He is left at home when I am away, but my roommate has a Shi Tzu named Bubba. They are both males. They do get along for the most part, but since they are both males they struggle for the alpha position. I would just be careful because while they enjoy playing with each other, they also get very jealous of each other.

As for the comment about the loss of a pet, I lost a chow/huskie mix that I had from the time I was 8 until I was 17. She was very old when she died, but her death was caused by being hit by a car. It is different for everyone, but when I lost Ebonie I couldn't even think about her without crying for at least a year. Looking at other dogs with their owners always upset me. I love animals and it took me several years before I could even think about getting another dog. Just be careful with your decision, and don't think another dog will replace the one you lost. Good luck!

Yes get her some company... if one year of ours is 7yrs for them... then while you are at work thats a long time for them to be on their own. My little Vikki has a little Chihuahua friend named Saffie and a big bullterrior/ridgeback named Mason.. and they all sleep and play together... they are not without their squobbles but they love one another and are great company for one another

I agree that your little doggie might love a companion. Dogs are such social animals. Even if they dont play together much I think it is just reassuring for them to know there is always another living breathing being in the house that they can be with.

Back and hip problems are pretty common to daschunds because of their body shape. Every pure bred breed has one or two general health problems caused by selective breeding.

Do some research before adding another dog to your home so that Brandy Alexis can feel that this is a positive thing happening.

I have my Dashua long haired mini. I started noticing some depressing behavior from him i.e. sleeping all day long. We recently got him a friend half pom half daschund mix. They seem to be getting along great! It could be loneliness, for your dog....daschunds like alot of babying and attention (at least mine does!)

Hello fellow wiener-dog lovers!! I have 2 "tweenies" (come on, ya'll know what I mean) Winston, red male, 8 yrs. old and 2 back surgeries and 80% range of motion in hind legs and Sophie, black and tan female, 7.5 yrs. old and 1 surgery and 100% complete recovery! Neither of them are overweight and have never been allowed to jump onto or from furniture - they both have a degenerative disc disease.

That said, while Winston is the "cripple" one, he doesn't know it and is as happy-go-lucky, dominate, alpha as ever.

I'm looking for socks for Winston, something with a rubber grip material on the bottom, for example. My floors are tile and while I've put rugs everywhere I can, he has a hard time getting traction on the tile floors and sometimes, when rounding that corner into the den, slips and falls on his behind.

All of the products I find in the pet stores are too big for their little feet and crooked legs.

Anyone have any ideas?

I have two dachsies also. Their names are Stanley and Frankie. Frankie was just recently added to the family (saved from an abusive home) and is very skiddish..but is slowly coming around. Stanley has been with us for about 2 years now and is full of love. Both Stan and Frank adore each other and groom each other almost everyday.

I also have a red female dachsund, Heidi, she is also alone during the day (being without us), but she spends it with our Scottish Terrier. I think it is always best to have 2 at all times, it keeps them company. Dachsund's are real "people" animals. Try to take her for walks and play with her when you are home, and just love on her all you can. Charish them always!

Hello. My long hair, Molly, became very depressed when she fell ill. Definately take her to the doc. However, they do need company. My Molly loved our little shitzu mix. He liked to give her baths, and she always wanted more. They really truly loved eachother. I recently had to put her down. I'm devistated and don't know where to begin to heal. Do you believe another dog would help to heal the pain, or just cause more grief?

My Mom has two of them. She got one for her birthday on August 7th last year and then another one in November. The first one is now much more active. But animals, like people, have different personalities. They are very different, but great company to one another.

I also have a 10 yr old female long haired dachshund, Molly. Last December, I rescued a 5 yr old male longhaired dachshund (with seizure disorder, but controlled by meds)- named Doodad. He is great company for Molly while I am at work and I think he will keep her young and active. Here's a web address for Dachshund Rescue of North America....they were great! :

There are so many unwanted animals in the world- Won't you think about rescuing one?

Could it be a health problem? Sometimes when a pet changes her usual behavior it might mean she needs to see the vet. I know that dachsies can get backaches easily for example.
