Moosh - "Don't Take my Picture!"

Moosh is moody and likes to be left alone often. On this particular day, the camera was not his "friend". He is 1 year old.

If you ask him his breed, he'd say human. We took in his momma and she was pregnant at the time. He likes to lay in the sun, sleep, eat, and chase birds.

Today's Tips

Cleaning Hardwood Floors

Tips for cleaning hardwood floors. Post your ideas.

Great news for hardwood floors! I have searched for some time now for the right cleaning product for my hardwood floors. I was not satisfied with Murphy's Oil Soap because it always left streaks and a dull residue behind. Swiffer Vinegar did the same thing. I have recently tried the new Pledge Multi Surface Cleaner and it worked pretty well, although I had to use a third of the bottle for my living room and at 4 dollars a pop, that can get pretty expensive.

On a whim I tried plain shaving cream, which I use on furniture and carpet stains to break up the dirt and because it rinses out easier than liquid soap. I use the generic brand from walmart. Anyway, I simply sprayed some on, wiped it in a circular motion with a dry towel, and then went over it again with a another dry part of the towel.

Not only did it pick up the dirt, but it also left behind a fabulous streak free shine! There was no residue left behind. Try this thrifty tip! You will see for yourself. Now I just have to figure out how to clean my entire floor with shaving cream. I guess I'll just wrap a towel around my swiffer, wipe the shaving cream around, and then use another towel to dry it all up and give it a nice polished shine.

Happy cleaning!

Making Stuffed Peppers

I use my jumbo muffin pan when I make stuffed peppers. Each muffin container is just the right size to hold a delicious stuffed pepper without it tipping over. My jumbo muffin pan holds 6 stuffed bell peppers very nicely! By LasVegasAngel

Custom Shower Curtain and Liner On The Cheap

I have made my own custom curtains and plastic liners and I raised the spring tension rod to near ceiling height. I have used a sheet for the outer curtain and bought plastic from the fabric store for the liner. Using grommets in both was not hard to do. Talk about saving money! If you wanted this look and had them custom made it would be very pricy. I added a valance on a spring tension rod in front of the curtain and liner that slides back and forth. Tip: There are ceiling lights made to put in showers! A handy homeowner can install one or you could have one installed. By Syd

Saving Money on Cookies

Tips for saving money on cookies. Post your ideas.

Cheap Cookies

Super markets with bakerys in the store, regularly mark down cookies. After a holiday is especially good, they seem to be cheaper. Store them in the freezer. If you want a snack, who cares what holiday they look like.

If you want to camouflage the holiday colors, add some icing! This can be cheaper than making cookies from scratch.

Mapquest Directions and Map Pages

After I go someplace I have Mapquested, I file the printout in a special file in the glove compartment (or trunk) of my car. Then next time I need to go, or need the mailing address, its handy. I also always write the phone number right onto the Mapquest pages. Click here to visit Mapquest.

Editor's Note: Google now has map pages as well. They don't have driving directions but they do have a fun feature with satellite pictures of many places. You can look at your street from above. Click here to visit Google Maps.

Organizing Shopping Receipts

Organizing Petty Cash and Receipts

I often shop with cash for my boss. I keep his money and all receipts in a looseleaf binder - type pencil pouch. This way it is clear when I need more cash, and all the receipts in the same place helps keep things clear.

Puppy Potty Training

When your dog goes outside to play wait outside until he goes to the bathroom.

Or when you come inside and he runs to go someplace to "go". Make him go back outside.

Or after he goes to the bathroom in the house, roll up a newspaper and firmly say "no, bad boy" and smack the paper hard in your hand. Give it a few days and I guarantee that your dog will be house broken!

Pool Party Safety Tips

It's swimming pool season, which means kids and accidents. If you are having a party designate 1 adult as the "POOL WATCHER" for a half hour. Then another adult gets the honor. The pool watcher's job is to keep close watch at the pool, and after her half-hour she gets to rejoin the adults for adult fun. Always have a phone, house phone or cell phone, at the pool. In an emergency you don't want to have to search for the phone! By Linda

Men's Shirts and Socks are Cheaper

Several years ago, when I had gotten a job working in a casino restaurant. I was required to wear white button down shirts, black slacks, black shoes, black socks. I quickly realized that my shirts were going to be stained nearly every day and I did not want to spend my whole paycheck on clothes. I found out that I could buy men's shirts and socks for about 1/2 the price as I could buy women's. Actually, I was able to buy a pack of several men's black socks for the same price as I could have gotten for 2 pairs of women's black socks! I was buying 2 men's white dress shirts for the same cost as 1 ladies blouse cost. No boss ever questioned me about my attire. By Terri

Destroying Ant Hills

We all know that pouring boiling water on ant hills is a good thing, but do it to the ant hills closest to the house FIRST. This will get the ants away from the house. The ones in the driveway may migrate closer to the house if you do them first.

Removing Your License Plate

If you've ever gone to the DMV to trade in your car tag and forgot to take a screwdriver (as I have), a penny will do the trick. Just align it with the slot and turn (clockwise.) By bekkicat Editor's Note: Here's a funny little memory tip that helps me which way to turn a screw. It's easy to remember: "Lefty Loosey, Righty Tighty". Turn to the left (counterclockwise) to loosen, the right (clockwise) to tighten.

Saving Money on Outdoor Furniture

Tips for saving money on outdoor furniture. Post your ideas.

Ways to Save on Outdoor Dining Tables

As you know, outdoor dining tables with their umbrellas cost a fair piece of change. Instead of purchasing something so expensive at the height of the season, why not just put a nice oval sized kitchen table outside on the patio like I did.

If you can wait until about August or September, you should be able to buy one of those all around enclosures with the netting for a much marked down price. One of these tables could probably be picked up at the local swap meet pretty reasonably. Also, check your bargain section of the classifieds.

A request can be made to your local "Free Cycle" as well, after joining for free. Just check out Then again, you could get lucky like I did and find one set out in the yard that had a "Free" sign on it. It was in excellent condition. Sure can't beat the price on that! But, then God has blessed me many times over. Thank you and God bless.

Washing Walls

Tips for cleaning walls. Post your ideas.

When washing walls, please ladies, you need TWO buckets of water. One bucket is your cleaning solution. The other is your rinse water. Use at least six to eight rags. Terry cloth is best. Toss all the rags in the cleaning solution. When one is soiled, toss it into the rinse water. The rinse water is all that needs to be changed. The cleaning solution stays clean. Only clean rags go into the cleaning solution.

Use a no rinse cleaner. The rags that have gone into the rinse water are rinsed out and reused if necessary. Clean from the bottom up, and don't forget the mop boards around the edges of the walls. They are dirtier than the walls because they collect so much dust.

A Home Cooked Meal as a Gift

For my parent's most recent wedding anniversary, my sister had ran out of ideas on what to give them as a gift. So she called them up (lives close by) and told them to not make any plans for dinner. Sis prepared them a home cooked meal, complete with an entree, 2 kinds of veggies, salad, rolls, dessert and a jug of tea. Then she took it to them. She said they seemed to have really enjoyed it. I know I would have! By Terri

Painting a Porch Floor

Can someone please help me. My porch floor is horrible. I try so hard to make my yard look nice and the front porch sticks out like a sore thumb. The floor is made of wood planks. I have tried to prime them and paint them with expensive porch paint. Then I tried the cheap way and painted them with spray paint. Nothing made any difference. The paint peels and flakes continuously. I have 5 dogs who practically live on the porch. I can not keep them off. I put up a little gate and they chewed it up to get on the porch. So what kind of porch floor should I use? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. This porch is making me miserable. The first thing people see is an ugly porch . Thank you, Lisa in Georgia

She is from Mexico and I would like to have some traditional Mexican influences, but I am not sure of what to do. I have made some spanish and english wish rocks, made the invites in both also. I have been told that another tradition is to place three type of nuts onto the tables in bowls. Any more ideas? Reg.

Looking for Carey Lind(?) Pattern

About ten years ago I wallpapered a room in brilliant colored blue wallpaper with white dots. When you look at the tiny white dots close-up, they are not round but square or diamond shaped. We ran out of paper and just put a dresser in front of the spot (lazy) but now we are selling the house. HELP! It was a very bright blue and I thought it was Carey Lind paper but I could definitely be wrong! I am desperate! Sad Sandy from New Hampshire
