RE:get rid of gnats and fruit flies
The best way to get rid of fruit flies is to put any rotton fruit in an old pop bottle, jar, etc,. Make a funnel, with the small end just big enough for a fruit fly to enter. Place small end into the jar and tape and seal around the jar until the funnel is secure. The flies will be attracted to the rotton scent and crawl into the jar but, will not be able to get out.
For knats that are coming from your house plants, work some fossil flour or Diatamatious Earth into the soil. It is made from the skeletal remains of pre-historic shelled fish and it has razor like shards in it that slices the bug and therefore dry it up. This sounds rather crazy I know, but it is true. It is a product that is used in the agriculture business to keep weevils out of grains. I have used it to store my grains for years. It is also healthy for humans and has been used for centuries as a means to get rid of tape worm and etc. You can buy it at health food stores or stores like Intermountain Farmer.
If you choose to use it as a supplement, make sure you buy food grade. I buy it in bulk at farm and agriculture stores because I use it in my garden to kill Sguash bugs and I use it along the base boards in my home to kill sugar ants and other bugs. If you are familiar with the product Sevin, it is the main ingredient in this product. The other being a very serious pesticide. The only hazard that Fossil Flour has to humans is, when it becomes airborne and inhaled, it can damage lungs because of the tiny glasslike shards that it is. Good luck.

RE: Solution for Flying Gnats
You can also use a 2 liter bottle. Cut top off, just above the label. Take cap off, add aluminum foil, for top secure it with either tape or a rubber band. Now put banana peels or something sour into bottle, invert top, with a small hole in foil(for gnats to go through). Tape all around the bottle with duct tape and you have a gnat trap, watch the little buggers fill it up. They can not get out.

RE: Solution for Flying Gnats
Like so many of you I am in the process of trying to find a solution to our flying gnat problem. I recently found out that cedar placed in houseplants works well. So I purchased small marble sized cedar pieces and placed one in each of my houseplants. Also, I have tried the following bug potion and it does work - if you spray the entire plant. I cut up a small onion and add to that 4 tablespoons of garlic, 1/4 cup of Joy dish soap - add this mixture to 1 quart of hot water and let cook overnight. Strain into a spray bottle and spray entire plant every couple of days.
I still have some gnats, but not as many - I intend to continue to treat my plants and I am also going to try some of the suggestions referenced here. Thank you for your ideas.

Apple Vinegar works:
Take a glass jar, fill it 1/2 way full of straight apple cidar vinegar. Cover it with plastic wrap, making sure it's taut over the top of the jar. I usually put a rubber band around the jar just to be sure. Poke a few small holes in the plastic, so the "aroma" can get out, and put 4-5 larger holes - I usually use tacks and then a stick pen. The scent will attrack the Gnats and the bigger holes allow them to go it, but they can't come out. You'll me amazed at how many you'll find floating in the vinegar after a few days.

Halleluja!! Last night I made paste from corn starch and garlic. Smeared all over my self including face and hair. I had a bite free good nights sleep. first in 11 days. Went to store this morning, got 1lb of Powdered garlic. Powder, like powdered sugar and cake duster, or condiment plastic bottle with long tip and small hole. I have gone around and dusted everything, everywhere. Including the dog, who loves it. Two hours now and it seems quieter. Many things I touch feel bug free. Good Luck

Gads, I thought I was nuts, now I think I am going nuts. Gnats, millions of them infesting the inside and outside of the house for ten days now. Very little sleep, I have tried most everything here, to include showering with dishwashing soap, anti bacterial orange scent, which helps for awhile. citrus spray. Vinegar and soap in bowls. Today I have large fan in window blowing out, because of "dust clouds" of gnats. Young, I think. Trying to blow them outside.

RE: Solution for Flying Gnats
Please help. I have some tiny flying gnats or flies that have taken over my house and don`t respond to fly paper or anything sticky, but love anything that smells sour. They look like miniature flies. They don`t bite but try to crawl in our eyes, nose, mouth, etc. Sprays don`t work because they dart around so fast you can`t see where they are to spray them.

RE: Solution for Flying Gnats
turn all the lights inside the house out and leave the porch light on....wait about 30 mins...when they are drawn to the light outside the door shoosh them out or spray them....may have to repeat a few nights...spray all your house plants with that kitchen bug spray that is safe for plants...if u have windows open and screens they are sneaking through, mix 1part gums spirits of turpentine wth 5 parts mineral oil and rub generously on screens....also used cooking oil mixed wth warm water and sprayed where they are breeding in damp sand will smother them and not harm the enviroment....it is also good for puddles growing moquitos...won't hurt a thing but the lil boogars...

Is there a SAFE SPRAY to apply to the infested plants?
I took bits and pieces from this entire thread, I took the worst of the affected plants outside (pepper plants) and what was left was something out of a horror movie! There were thousands of them YUCK!!! I ripped out the vacuum and sucked most of them up. I went to the rest of the plants and vacuumed the tops of them. I have set up vinegar traps (which have worked for me before but didn't eradicate them) and hoping for the best.
My BIG question is: Are there any alternatives to poisons that I can spray on the plants themselves? I have dogs and I also plan to eat those peppers and don't want any poison being used. I see a lot of things we can put NEAR the plants, but anything safe I can spray directly on the soil that won't harm animals or edible plants? Thanks!

I have an assigned parking spot for my car. Each morning I go out there are more and more gnats flying around my car. Like hundreds of them. I was wondering if anyone can suggest a way of getting rid of these pests? Moving the car is not an option.

RE: Solution for Flying Gnats
Get a small saucer and pool a small amount of Merlot in it. Get the vacuum cleaner out and hook up the hose with the crevice attachment. About every 30 minutes or so go look at the saucer. There will probably be 20 or so gnats around. Turn on the vacuum and slowly mover the crevice attachment closer to them. They will just sit there hoping you don't see them and poof! They will be sucked into the vacuum. Do this until you see no more. Repeat once a week until the season is over. Remember to move slowly or they will fly away. Hope this helps

RE: Solution for Flying Gnats
Simple. Prepare a pot of coffee. Put some of the coffee in a bowl in each room where you have seen time. The next morning they will all be dead. There is something about the coffee that attracts them and they drown.

Yeah I just started to get bites on my jawline, neck and face every night. I wake up with intense itching. It could be a biting fly or a gnat, I've never caught one. First I thought they were bed bugs. I cleaned up my place really good. Will try the fly trap. maybe some off on my face before I sleep.

Take a jar or disposial glass put 1/3 cup of Apple Vinegar, tea spoon sugar and mix - Take a sheet of paper and make a funnel, Stick small end of your funnel down in the glass Tape off around the lip of the glass. Stand back and watch the little bugars come a runner for dinner. Once they get in they get confused and die. This really works

The one written down the most is the vinegar in the bowl with foil or plastic wrap with holes in it.I pray that at least one of them works.thanks for all the tips! Wish me luck!

What I do at work when the gnats get in my face and mouth and eyes and ears is, I light up a black and mild. They scatter like no other they hate smoke, and they will leave you alone. I found out that the cigars work better if you are outside for a long time because they burn longer then a cigarette.

RE: Solution for Flying Gnats
My husband makes wine every year at this time, and the gnats go crazy for the smell coming from vats of fermenting grapes in our kitchen (that's another story :-) Anyway, I have clouds of them and have had great success capturing them by the dozen by leaving wine glasses containing a small amount of white port in a few spots in the house. The gnats seem fond of large mirrors for some reason, so I even have a glass of port in the bathroom. They are attracted to it, and get stuck in it because it is so sweet/viscous. Good luck!

RE: Solution for Flying Gnats
The gnats lay eggs in standing water and plants. I've changed out my soil for water crystals from a craft store and pour some bleach down all my drains at night then go to bed. also clean your toilet bowl rim especially under lip of bowl to prevent nests. fly traps near garbage. I have a mini indoor bug zapper for my kitchen or any room near the garbage. they love garbage. i am constantly bit every 10 minutes in my living room and wake up in the middle of the night for water and have fresh bites on my neck! i even saw a few in the standing water inside my window ac unit.

RE: Solution for Flying Gnats
Hi....It sounds as though these gnats are not from outside, but from inside. They are called "fungus" gnats, and they are from your indoor plants. You will never get rid of them all until you treat your plants, and the dirt. You may even have to re-pot all plants in new dirt, then keep that dirt treated so none will develop. If you never treat where they are coming from (plants), then you will never get rid of them, and they just multiply.

I had a serious problem with gnats in my kitchen. Even if I kept the dishes done and trash taken out, they were everywhere. Here is my solution, seems to be working. Dial hand soap in a little bowl. Everytime I go in the kitchen now there are more and more dead ones inside the cup.

RE: Solution for Flying Gnats
You use hair spray - the cheaper the better - you can even cut it with rubbing alcohol (in a pump bottle) to make it go further...Seems their wings stick or something. I like it becaz it's relatively non-toxic & I can use it in the kitchen....

I am desperate at this point. I am going to trap those little things with everything you said. In the past, we have bombed our house, but they manage to come back. I also wanted to note that the cheap 1.00 store air fresher kills ants! I did try it on the gnat but it doesn't work.

RE: Solution for Flying Gnats
Well if the detergent with water will work then even beer on a plate should too. It isn't the detergent that kills the gnats, they drowned. By adding detergent to water it breaks the surface tension of the water that would normally allow the insect to stand on the water, so, they sink immediately and drowned. Beer on a plate works the same way. I have used this method for fleas as well. Happy hunting!

We had guests over and all night I was discreetly trying to shoo the gnats from the food - it was horrible. Getting Rid of Flying Gnats
For getting rid of gnats, I read this somewhere and it really works. Sometimes we have food items laying on the floor or counter tops in kitchen...so the GNATS show up. What you do is mix some vinegar and sugar till the sugar is dissolved then add some water. You do not want to add a lot of water. What you want is a strong vinegar smell. You put some this mixture in a quart jar...filling it till it is about 1/3 full and sit it around where the gnats are at. They will fly into the jar and land on the surface of the mixture and then can't get back out. When the mixture has evaporated or a lot of bugs are in it, wash out the jar and add some fresh liquid. Sometimes when the gnats hang around the opening of bottle, then u can spray some dishwashing liquid immediately on the gnats, they will fall off and immediately run a trissue over them and flush it down the toilet.

A friend of mine sent me an email a few months ago regarding getting rid of mosquitos and flying gnats. I tried this and it definitely works!
Place a little of lemon fresh Joy dish detergent in a white dish (bowl or plate) with a little water and mosquitos and gnats are drawn to the scent and they just keel over dead once they come in contact with it.

RE: Solution for Flying Gnats
My Daddy used to take a clean canning jar & a piece of notebook paper to form a "gnat catcher". He'd turn the paper so that paper sort of looks like a funnel, bigger at the top than at the bottom and tuck the small end in the canning jar. Once you have the paper that way, you've got the hard part finished. Eat a piece of fresh fruit, that has a seed inside, like a fresh peach, put the peach seed or whatever seed in the bottom of the jar, lift the paper out and replace it and just leave it. The gnats will find their way to the peach seed, but won't be able to find their way out. Once you have a bunch of gnats, dispose of how you desire.

As silly as this may sound, it has worked several times in the past for me. HAIR SPRAY! Spray it directly on the gnats and it keeps them from being able to move their wings. They instantly fall to the ground! Good luck!

RE: Solution for Flying Gnats
I have never tried this, but I read a month or so ago now that wiping laundry softener towels over your skin would keep biting insects at bay. We live in Southeast Alaska and have lots of mosquitoes and "no-see-ums," which are small biting gnats. It worked quite well, so you might want to try making a solution of laundry softener and water and putting it into a spray bottle. Then try spraying it around like a room spray or at least around your screen doors, windows, etc., or where the horrible little creatures more than like enter. Who knows? It might work and it is harmless to the environment. The bonus is, it also smells great!
