In NC it is very hot and muggy. We have problems with knats getting inside the house and driving us crazy. We've taken care of obvious causes, but we are still plagued by them. Any ideas on how to control them inside without harsh sprays?

I have an assigned parking spot for my car. Each morning I go out there are more and more gnats flying around my car. Like hundreds of them. I was wondering if anyone can suggest a way of getting rid of these pests? Moving the car is not an option.

Get a small saucer and pool a small amount of Merlot in it. Get the vacuum cleaner out and hook up the hose with the crevice attachment. About every 30 minutes or so go look at the saucer. There will probably be 20 or so gnats around. Turn on the vacuum and slowly mover the crevice attachment closer to them. They will just sit there hoping you don't see them and poof! They will be sucked into the vacuum. Do this until you see no more. Repeat once a week until the season is over. Remember to move slowly or they will fly away. Hope this helps

Simple. Prepare a pot of coffee. Put some of the coffee in a bowl in each room where you have seen time. The next morning they will all be dead. There is something about the coffee that attracts them and they drown.

Yeah I just started to get bites on my jawline, neck and face every night. I wake up with intense itching. It could be a biting fly or a gnat, I've never caught one. First I thought they were bed bugs. I cleaned up my place really good. Will try the fly trap. maybe some off on my face before I sleep.

Take a jar or disposial glass put 1/3 cup of Apple Vinegar, tea spoon sugar and mix - Take a sheet of paper and make a funnel, Stick small end of your funnel down in the glass Tape off around the lip of the glass. Stand back and watch the little bugars come a runner for dinner. Once they get in they get confused and die. This really works

Spray yourself with listerine mouth wash. It keeps them away from you. I know it sounds crazy, but it works. I do it everyday before work.

There is a new natural repellant called BUGGINS that seems to work great for biting gnats. Check it out. http://www.buggspray.com/natural-mosquito-repellent.html
We live near a river and the biting gnats drive us crazy. Our neighbor tolds about this product and it helped a lot. You can order it on-line.

My parents said we have a bad gnat problem. I am writing down as many of these solutions as I can. I really hope they work. I've never tried any of these. The one written down the most is the vinegar in the bowl with foil or plastic wrap with holes in it.I pray that at least one of them works.thanks for all the tips! Wish me luck!

What I do at work when the gnats get in my face and mouth and eyes and ears is, I light up a black and mild. They scatter like no other they hate smoke, and they will leave you alone. I found out that the cigars work better if you are outside for a long time because they burn longer then a cigarette.

For this particular problem I put garlic in all the potted plants and the gnats went crazy and haven't bothered me since. but if they came back this summer. I'm just gonna use the vinegar trick.

The Gnats are hanging around your face because they are attracted to carbon dioxide (as well as mosquitoes) just so you know.

I have just put out some vinegar in a white bowl with some water not much though and in minutes they came running for it. I think if it will kill them then I'll be happy. I hate them and I tried the vinegar and it works

My husband makes wine every year at this time, and the gnats go crazy for the smell coming from vats of fermenting grapes in our kitchen (that's another story :-) Anyway, I have clouds of them and have had great success capturing them by the dozen by leaving wine glasses containing a small amount of white port in a few spots in the house. The gnats seem fond of large mirrors for some reason, so I even have a glass of port in the bathroom. They are attracted to it, and get stuck in it because it is so sweet/viscous. Good luck!

The gnats lay eggs in standing water and plants. I've changed out my soil for water crystals from a craft store and pour some bleach down all my drains at night then go to bed. also clean your toilet bowl rim especially under lip of bowl to prevent nests. fly traps near garbage. I have a mini indoor bug zapper for my kitchen or any room near the garbage. they love garbage.
i am constantly bit every 10 minutes in my living room and wake up in the middle of the night for water and have fresh bites on my neck! i even saw a few in the standing water inside my window ac unit.

I called my pest guy and he said put dishwashing liquid in your drains before you go to bed at night. Also, though not frugal, Lysol Anitbacterial Kitchen Cleaner kills them almost instantly when you spray them. Those gnats can drive you crazy!

Hi....It sounds as though these gnats are not from outside, but from inside. They are called "fungus" gnats, and they are from your indoor plants. You will never get rid of them all until you treat your plants, and the dirt. You may even have to re-pot all plants in new dirt, then keep that dirt treated so none will develop. If you never treat where they are coming from (plants), then you will never get rid of them, and they just multiply.

I had a serious problem with gnats in my kitchen. Even if I kept the dishes done and trash taken out, they were everywhere. Here is my solution, seems to be working. Dial hand soap in a little bowl. Everytime I go in the kitchen now there are more and more dead ones inside the cup.

You use hair spray - the cheaper the better - you can even cut it with rubbing alcohol (in a pump bottle) to make it go further...Seems their wings stick or something. I like it becaz it's relatively non-toxic & I can use it in the kitchen....

I am desperate at this point. I am going to trap those little things with everything you said. In the past, we have bombed our house, but they manage to come back. I also wanted to note that the cheap 1.00 store air fresher kills ants! I did try it on the gnat but it doesn't work.

Well if the detergent with water will work then even beer on a plate should too. It isn't the detergent that kills the gnats, they drowned. By adding detergent to water it breaks the surface tension of the water that would normally allow the insect to stand on the water, so, they sink immediately and drowned. Beer on a plate works the same way. I have used this method for fleas as well. Happy hunting!

I got an infestation of gnats and just sprayed them with windex. They suffocate. It's a vinegar style windex. You can try Windex or Vinegar in a spray.

This is the first time I have had problems with gnats so I will be trying many of these suggestions. We had guests over and all night I was discreetly trying to shoo the gnats from the food - it was horrible. My husband said that when he gets to heaven that he is going to ask God, "Why ticks and fleas?" and I will add..."Why gnats?" LOL
Thanks everyone!

For getting rid of gnats, I read this somewhere and it really works. Sometimes we have food items laying on the floor or counter tops in kitchen...so the GNATS show up. What you do is mix some vinegar and sugar till the sugar is dissolved then add some water. You do not want to add a lot of water. What you want is a strong vinegar smell. You put some this mixture in a quart jar...filling it till it is about 1/3 full and sit it around where the gnats are at. They will fly into the jar and land on the surface of the mixture and then can't get back out. When the mixture has evaporated or a lot of bugs are in it, wash out the jar and add some fresh liquid. Sometimes when the gnats hang around the opening of bottle, then u can spray some dishwashing liquid immediately on the gnats, they will fall off and immediately run a trissue over them and flush it down the toilet.

A friend of mine sent me an email a few months ago regarding getting rid of mosquitos and flying gnats. I tried this and it definitely works!

Place a little of lemon fresh Joy dish detergent in a white dish (bowl or plate) with a little water and mosquitos and gnats are drawn to the scent and they just keel over dead once they come in contact with it.

My Daddy used to take a clean canning jar & a piece of notebook paper to form a "gnat catcher". He'd turn the paper so that paper sort of looks like a funnel, bigger at the top than at the bottom and tuck the small end in the canning jar. Once you have the paper that way, you've got the hard part finished. Eat a piece of fresh fruit, that has a seed inside, like a fresh peach, put the peach seed or whatever seed in the bottom of the jar, lift the paper out and replace it and just leave it. The gnats will find their way to the peach seed, but won't be able to find their way out. Once you have a bunch of gnats, dispose of how you desire.

As silly as this may sound, it has worked several times in the past for me. HAIR SPRAY! Spray it directly on the gnats and it keeps them from being able to move their wings. They instantly fall to the ground! Good luck!

I have never tried this, but I read a month or so ago now that wiping laundry softener towels over your skin would keep biting insects at bay. We live in Southeast Alaska and have lots of mosquitoes and "no-see-ums," which are small biting gnats. It worked quite well, so you might want to try making a solution of laundry softener and water and putting it into a spray bottle. Then try spraying it around like a room spray or at least around your screen doors, windows, etc., or where the horrible little creatures more than like enter. Who knows? It might work and it is harmless to the environment. The bonus is, it also smells great!
